In August 2016, the Games of the XXXI Olympiad were held in Rio de Janeiro, making Brazil the first South American country to host the Summer Olympics. This was widely regarded as a new landmark event in the history of the modern Olympic movement. From the GANEFO to Rio, the Olympic Games have witnessed the shifting balance in international politics and world economy. This book aims at understanding the transformation of the Olympics over the past decades and tries to explain how the Olympic movement played its part in world politics, the world economy and international relations against the background of the rise of developing countries. During its transformative existence the Movement has taken advantage of many opportunities that have been offered, especially through the growth and importance of global sport. However, at the same time, the Olympic Movement has also been regularly beset by significant internal and external challenges. The fact that the Olympic Games have managed to survive despite them should not mean that those who lead the Movement should be unduly optimistic or complacent. In today's environment Olympic leaders must continue to overcome such hurdles and make the most of opportunities. To achieve this it is crucial that Olympic lessons of the past are remembered. Just as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has instigated the Transfer of Know How Program for Olympic Games Organising Committees (OCOGs), Olympic managers need to recognize the challenges of the past and how previous Olympic management dealt with them. This is essential because, in reality, much recent Olympic history has merely repeated what has come before, albeit in new contexts. For example, doping, hyper commercialism, media rights and political interference are recurring and continuing concerns. Thus, in addition to every Olympic Games since 1896, intervening years can be used as learning experiences for host cities and nations, for the Olympic Movement, and for sport at large. At the heart of many Olympic controversies is the fact that the Olympic rhetoric still does not always match its reality. This remains a hurdle that the IOC must overcome to become the integrious body it wishes to be, especially in the second decade of the 21st century, when the call for increasing corporate social responsibility (CSR) is echoing loudly throughout the world. The nature of CSR is congruous with Olympism, the philosophical basis of the Olympic Movement, and indeed the IOC has much to offer other large.
