Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Oath to Action presents a bold, yet achievable, pathway to rebuilding American democracy. The book challenges our very understanding of what political leadership looks like in today's world. At a time when our political landscape looks increasingly bleak, this book inspires through its vision and its practicality. Our democratic institutions need repairing-on that most Americans would agree. But institutions change only when the people in them change, and most people change only one step at a time. Therein lies the path forward. We don't need politicians who will "fix Washington." We need politicians who will fix themselves, one simple act of courage at a time. From Oath to Action suggests twelve acts of courage that could transform American politics. Some are so simple that anyone aspiring to leadership should embrace them. Others are for the more courageous. One is so powerful-a "do or die" pledge-that it could fix a long-hidden flaw at the heart of representative democracy. Leadership in the 21st century should be about more than just taking an oath. It should be about taking action. Courageous action. This book provides a roadmap to courageous action for leaders and citizens alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2008, the American patriot/militia movement—right-wing antigovernment groups who portray themselves as fighting encroaching tyranny—has grown exponentially. Oath Keepers is among the most visible and vocal of these organizations. Formed in 2009, Oath Keepers gained notoriety for its involvement in the Bundy Ranch standoff of 2014 and the Malheur Refuge occupation of 2016. The group gives voice to a recurrent form of American politics: virulent distrust of the government combined with a valorization of violence. Sam Jackson takes readers inside the world of the most prominent antigovernment group in the United States, examining its extensive online presence to discover how it builds support for its political goals and actions. Through an extensive textual analysis of the group’s publications, Jackson explores how Oath Keepers draws on core American political values and pivotal historical moments of conflict and crisis from the Revolutionary War to Waco to Hurricane Katrina to cast its adherents as defenders of liberty. He details how Oath Keepers makes sense of the contemporary United States, how it provides members with models of political behavior, and how it lobbies the wider American public to join the group. The first book-length investigation of the contemporary patriot/militia movement, Oath Keepers sheds new light on what animates groups that pose a growing threat to American security and political culture.

Book Oath Formulas in Biblical Hebrew

Download or read book Oath Formulas in Biblical Hebrew written by Blane Conklin and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eponymous protagonist of the biblical story of Ruth, a Moabite widow, is so desperate to follow her widowed mother-in-law back to Israel that she swears an oath. Regardless of the translation one may choose, the sense is the same: Ruth promises to stick by Naomi’s side for at least as long as they both shall live. Ruth’s intention with respect to the two widows’ proximity once they cross the final river is not so unanimous in the translations, however. According to the NRSV, Ruth says: (1) “May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!” The njpsv is representative of many other translations with its rendering: (2) “Thus and more may the Lord do to me if anything but death parts me from you.” The difference may seem trivial, but the contradiction between the italicized phrases is total. Either death will not ultimately separate them, or it will, in Ruth’s view. The issue here is not a theological one, nor is this an archaeological issue. Rather, the issue is of a linguistic nature. What does the Hebrew phrase mean? The solution to the problem is fairly straightforward. The first step is to recognize that Ruth’s statement is an oath. Oaths often employ formulaic, elliptical phrases. Therefore, it is necessary to gather together in one place as many of these formulas as possible so that the patterns, tendencies, and divergences may be seen within a larger matrix. Conklin’s study intriguingly compiles precisely these phrases and formulas in order to solve the mystery of interpreting Biblical Hebrew oath formulas.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1903, this two-volume work contains an English translation of the first fifteen books of the Digest of Justinian, which formed one part of Roman civil law. Monro uses the Latin text edited by Theodor Mommsen, and translates Latin legal terms by using explanatory substitute words, not by giving the nearest approximation of the idea in English law. Volume Two contains the translation of Books Seven to Fifteen. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in late Roman law or the history of law in Europe.
