Book Invisible History Growing Up Colored in Cape Charles Virginia

Download or read book Invisible History Growing Up Colored in Cape Charles Virginia written by Metty Vargas Pellicer and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-10-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a memoir about growing up Black in Cape Charles, Virginia on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake. It details the origin of the town as a railroad terminus and connecting to ferry barges across the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk, through its golden age in the Jim Crow South and its decline with the ascendancy of automobiles and the building of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Its rise again as a tourist destination in the past decade and how the fortunes of the town is chronicled, without acknowledgment of the role of the Black community, which was a robust and thriving parallel community, that evolved in response to the segregation of the Jim Crow South. Now the town is rising again as a tourist destination and replacing the Black section with White weekend second home owners, and the Black presence has considerably diminished. Without a recording of its history, its entire memory will be gone, as if it was never there at all. The memoir details the life of one Black man who is the grandson of a slave but became the first elected Black member of the Town Council and the first Black member elected to the Northampton County Board of Supervisors. It addresses Black and White relations and the experience of being Black and how one navigates the Jim Crow racist era. By reading this account of a Black man's life one may develop a better understanding of why we are experiencing still racial injustice and inequality, after legal barriers had been abolished by the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Its target audience would be all who are interested, both Blacks and Whites, in learning how they still carry the legacy of slavery in their hearts and how it informs their behavior at present and how by acknowledging their racist beliefs, they can choose to correct them, with actions that help realize the dream of true equality of the races and fulfill the lofty promise of the Revolution: its declaration of the self- evident truth, that all men are created equal, with unalienable rights to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

Book My Last Name Is Grandma

Download or read book My Last Name Is Grandma written by Ella Elliott Colvin and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When my Husband and I became Grandparents, we were surprised at the uncontrollable and endless flow of love and affection we felt for our Grandchildren. It was a feeling that seemed to equal, or surpass the feelings we had for our children when they were growing up (sorry kids). But we soon found that while the love seemed to be as equal, expressing it was different. My maternal Grandmother displayed that same kind of endless flow of love for her grand kids. I knew her as Granny, and I believe she was the litmus test, the gold standard for all Grandmothers. She showered all of her grand kids with unconditional love, and made each of us feel as if we were the most important person in the world. I knew Granny as Granny, and I am sure that I didn't learn her last name until I was much older. To me her name could have been Granny, No Middle Initial, Granny, because to us it was about the way she made us feel, and how we felt about her, and the name Granny was all we needed to know. My grand kids call me Grandma, and for the longest time, that was my first and last name to them, and I didn't mind at all.

Book excerpt: "Why are people so different?" This question led to a heartfelt conversation with my daughter. After spending a weekend with both of her grandmothers, she was processing her thoughts about their differences and how much she loved them both. I quickly wrote them down and pondered how to capture her precious thoughts. Thoughts which led to the writing of this book. Grandmothers, biological or adopted, are such incredible blessings and the quality time they spend with their grandchildren is priceless. This book examines the special qualities in my daughter's grandmothers, their differences, as well as their common love for her. It includes a comparing/contrasting model that the reader can use in their own life as well as a discussion guide for grandmothers and mothers alike. Being different is a good thing and children need to realize that diversity -whether at home or in the world around them-is a part of life and to cherish the good in it. Love is a gift, and so are grandmothers. My Two Grandmothers is a book to be enjoyed by children of all ages. It also is a wonderful mentor text for teachers to use in their reading instruction.

Book excerpt: Every time little Joseph visits his grandmother, Doris, he is afraid of the love she offers. Like many children, Joseph does not recognize what having a grandma means. Still, they go everywhere together--she picks him up from school, takes him to the doctor when he is sick, and plays ball with him. As Joseph grows up, he and his grandmother create a bond like no other. When Joseph has his Bar Mitzvah and officially becomes a man, according to Jewish customs, no one smiles bigger than his grandma. But as Doris ages, she becomes sick, weak and unable to carry on with their Jewish traditions. Joseph is right by her side, just like a grandson should be. He plays cards with her, keeps her company, and brings her whatever she needs. Just as he finally realizes what unconditional love really means, he must prepare to say goodbye to her. In this poignant childrens tale, a little boy comes of age, with the help of his devoted grandmother, and learns what it is like to be loved.
