Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Naval Academy: Being the Yarn of the American Midshipman Here were stationed the quartermasters, who were assistants to the Officer in charge Of the deck, besides having their own especial functions Of stowing the hold, coiling down the cables, attending to the steering, and keeping the time by the watch-glasses. Upon them first fell the additional work Of transmitting orders from the quarter-deck to the forecastle, and thus saving the meces sity Of the Officer in command aft leaving his proper station. It was found, however, that the quartermasters had about enough to do in the other particulars before noted, and therefore the practice grew up Of detailing seamen - men Of experience selected from the crew - who could be relied upon to carry orders intelligently, to con vey messages between the two points. The tradition is that, because these men were stationed in the waist, or mid-ship portion, Of the vessel, they were called midshipmen. Book Recollections of an Admiral s Wife 1903 1916 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of an Admiral's Wife, 1903-1916 Still, there is undoubtedly something in the position of any captain in the British Navy, no matter how insignificant his command, which differentiates it from all others. He is under God responsible for his ship and his men. She is a unit, contemptible perhaps in herself, but forming part of the greatest and best of navies, and as such is precious and beloved. No com mander-in-chief can have quite the same feeling of intimate possession when in charge of ever so fine a fleet as that which animates and inspires a young lieutenant whose obsolescent torpedo-boat is the apple of his eye and the core of his heart. Even the midshipman of the dinghy will scheme and steal for his boat, so that She may be the smartest and most efficient of her humble class and justify his devotion by becoming agreeably notorious among her fellows. Since the Navy is very conservative in certain things this is probably the case still. It was so when my husband at thirteen and a half was sent for by his commander and told to find a brass yoke and rowlocks for his boat-the dinghy. He found them within a week and learnt that stealing for the good of the ship is no sin but a Virtue - so long as the thief is undetected. Bob, the only grandson in the family, had been East to visit our oldest brother, and had come home wild about the sea. He dreamed of it, he talked of it; he devoured Cooper, Marryatt, and Mayne Reid; he routed in junk-shops, until his room was an armory of old swords, cutlasses, and pistols; he bought prints of ships at every possible angle of sailing, and his portfolio was bursting with pictures of sea-fights. But this was simply the prelude to our woe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Life of Richard Earl Howe K G

Download or read book The Life of Richard Earl Howe K G written by John Barrow and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Richard Earl Howe, K. G: Admiral of the Fleet, and General of Marines It may appear remarkable enough that, amidst the profusion of publications which annually issue from the press, the biography of such a man as Lord Howe, whose whole life was devoted to the service of his country (civil and military), without interruption, for more than sixty years, should not have found a place among them. No Life, however, of Admiral Lord Howe has yet been published. We have Memoirs, and Sketches, and Scraps, in which many of his brilliant exploits and professional services have been briefly noticed, mostly from official documents, rarely from private sources, yet nothing whatever relating to his private character or opinions, either from himself or any part of his family: but these brief memoirs afford no record of his many acquirements, great virtues, and moral excellence as a member of society. No blame attaches to the writers of such desultory pieces for these omissions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They were rushed through the school in three years, and those who staid by the flag were graduated in time to participate in the naval battle of Mobile Bay, and the attack on Fort Fisher.
