Donadio Jr. was fresh out of his medical residency training in 1966 when he was drafted into the United States Army Medical Corps and sent to Vietnam to supervise a renal (kidney) unit at the 3rd Field Hospital near Saigon. In From the Military Draft to Vietnam: Memoirs of a Physician Serving in the War, Dr. Donadio looks back at his year of treating American soldiers wounded on the battlefield. During his service there, he also cared for Vietnamese civilians in outpatient clinics and Vietnamese children in nearby orphanages. Dr. Donadio found the unique medical practice in the war zone to be both challenging and rewarding, but leaving behind his wife and four children for a year was painful and required extra mental effort on his part to push ahead and attend to his medical responsibilities. His faith also helped him during his time there, and he was honored to serve as Francis Joseph Cardinal Spellman's attending physician during the Cardinal's Christmas 1966 tour of the combat zone. Dr. Donadio's memoirs included both his recollections of these experiences backed by a vast assembly of documentary sources.

Each year, the hospital receives hundreds of foreign delegations who go there for training, sharing medical knowledge, or to cooperate in development of research. Bartecchi served in the US Army as a Flight Surgeon during the Vietnam War and in addition to caring for wounded troops, organized medical forays by helicopter to towns throughout the Mekong Delta. During his tour in Vietnam he developed an admiration and respect for the resilient and proud Vietnamese people. In the mid-90s, he became involved with assisting the hospital improve their facility and providing training for doctors, nurses and staff there, including exchanges of medical personnel between Bach Mai and American hospitals, as assistance in the area of medical equipment and supplies, donated by organizations and corporations. Book excerpt: The Vietnam Journal is a personal record of a young "mustang" naval officer and his team of three doctors and eleven hospital corpsmen sent to Vietnam following the Tet Offensive in 1968 under the operational control of the US Agency for International Development. Their mission was to assist the medical staff of a Vietnamese civilian hospital of the early nineteenth-century variety for 365 days. It was a struggle of living and working under the most trying conditions of enemy threat, culture shock, language barriers, and the general chaos of military, inefficient civilian agencies, and foreign entity conflicts. The team being responsible to each of these for something yet receiving support from none. However, it is also a story of an evolution of young men, most under the age of twenty-one, coming from a world of set standards with clear expectations and objectives and their adaptations and changes to get the job done and survive. They were surrounded by the war, but not a part of it, except to be involved in the aftermath of its result near them. Yet they were constantly targeted by mortar and rockets fire on the average of every ten days. Most of the team handled the stress well. Several of the older team members did not. The Journal is noticeably frank in capturing the team's interactions with the circumstances they found themselves in and with each other. Their achievements, shortcomings, exceptional performances, prejudices, and individual creativeness are recorded as a matter of fact and without regard to rank or position. It is honest and replete with its own recurring humor. It has its share of mysteries, deception and crime, and intrigue. None of the team member were aware of their actions being recorded, except the author. It was not meant to be secretly recorded, it just never was questioned or discussed.

Book excerpt: Late in summer 1973, the Bell Museum of Pathology of the University of Minnesota Medical School, held a three day symposium to discuss some of the biological aspects of trauma disease. The meeting was intended to be a coatribution to the study of trauma by placing emphasis upon many of the basic biologic issues related to trauma injuries. It was also hoped to put in focus perspectives from which constructive interaction between basic research scientists and practicing clinicians could flow. It is our belief that it is through such interdisciplinary exchanges that intelligent progress and new developments will occur. Moreover we believe that the student body and the practicing physician can equally share this scientific backdrop, and in a sense must so participate, for in a technological society trauma injuries face the prospect of an almost exponential increase in numbers, decade to decade. With these views in mind we brought together biologists, biophysicists, biochemists, pathologists, physicians and surgeons, in an effort to build a new bridge of collaborative understanding between unrelated disciplines, which, in the past, have charac teristically rarely inter-related, one to the other. There were no hard and fast rules set in the selection of topics. Not surprisingly, therefore, the program developed into one of diverse and remarkable scope and breadth. Papers for discussion varied from the biochemistry of collagen metabolism to features of trauma characteristic of aviation and air trauma accidents.

St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center has a Family Medicine residency program that trains 20 physicians each year and Parkview Medical Center has an Internal Medicine residency program that trains 30 physicians each year. Parkview Medical Center also has a Critical Care Medicine fellowship program that trains six physicians each year. The early 1970s was an exciting time in medicine and especially critical care medicine in southern Colorado. Book excerpt: Millions of children are dying each year with preventable and reversible critical illness, including circulatory shock and respiratory failure. According to the World Health Organization, in 2015, the under-five mortality rate in low-income countries was 76 deaths per 1000 live births – about 11 times the average rate in high-income countries (7 deaths per 1000 live births). There is limited data about the nature of the delivery of critical care in resource-limited regions. The care of critically ill children in low-resource settings is challenging, contributing factors include limitations in the existing infrastructure, lack of resources, and low numbers of appropriately trained healthcare workers. Meeting these challenges requires clinical evidence pertinent to the local settings, adequate number of well-trained personnel, quality improvement activities, and the ongoing development of preventative measures. In addition, approaches to prevent worsening critical illness in at-risk hospitalized patients are needed. We are presenting 15 state-of-the art manuscripts from international experts, from all settings, involved in the care of critically ill children in resource-limited settings. This collection of manuscripts covers topics including education, research, clinical experience and infectious diseases. We hope that we are providing a window into the future of critical care delivery for all children around the world.
