Book The Reincarnation of Heston Venns Rye

Download or read book The Reincarnation of Heston Venns Rye written by Henry Stevenson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "He climbed up on the wing of a 1941 Waco bi-plane and seated himself in the cockpit. He had never sat in one of these models before and he loved the feel it gave him. With a sudden rush he realized that he knew everything about this airplane. He reached underneath the seat, without looking, knowing the fuel-cock would be there ... and it was. He even recited in his mind the piston size and the complete mechanical workings of the interior of the engine. He climbed out of the plane and walked around it several times. Something drew him to this plane -- something deep inside himself." Déjà vu experiences startle Jason Conrad, as does the name "Monica" sounding in his head. Sometimes his dreams show him how to fly maneuvers he has no training for, and sometimes his visions insist he has a soulmate somewhere whom he has known for a very long time. A bygone, tragic news story posted on an airport wall; a crashed plane in the Amazon Rain Forest; a girl in a yellow blouse; the rescue of a boy's life which leads to a drug cartel in Colombia all contribute to the unveiling of Jason's previous life and the soulmate whose love he's yearned for. While Jason's sense of adventure carries him geographically far and wide, it also fuels his discovery that he is traveling from one lifetime to another in a compelling, ongoing saga of love.

Book Wars of Latin America 1899 1941

Download or read book Wars of Latin America 1899 1941 written by René De La Pedraja and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years 1899 through 1941 are remarkable even by Latin America's uniquely turbulent standards. During this time, border disputes and domestic insurrections forcefully shaped the history of this area, as many countries made the rocky transition from agrarian to industrial societies. This volume provides a concise survey of Latin American wars between 1899 and 1941. It compares and contrasts the wars and considers them in light of military theory. It also demonstrates how instrumental wars have been in directing the history of Latin America, and how the United States has often influenced these wars in a decisive manner. Wars examined include border disputes in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Panama, and Costa Rica, and domestic insurrections in Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Numerous photographs and maps illustrate the text and make it easy to follow every military campaign. The vivid narrative captures the human drama of the wars and brings to life the violent clashes of powerful personalities in unusually hostile terrain. Jungles, mountains, and deserts ravaged armies no less dramatically than combat, and the emotions the wars released make many episodes unforgettable. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book The United States and Inter American Security 1889 1960

Download or read book The United States and Inter American Security 1889 1960 written by J. Lloyd Mecham and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the several regional arrangements that function within the United Nations, the most elaborate in organization and function is the Organization of American States. Although the United Nations holds the primary responsibility for preserving international peace, its charter concedes virtual autonomy to regional arrangements in dealing with matters considered appropriate for regional action. This latitude stimulated a trend toward regionalism which eventually posed the important question of how to preserve legitimate regionalism like Pan-Americanism without impairing the essential overall authority of the United Nations. Following an introductory description of all existing regional arrangements, this comprehensive case study examines every aspect of security cooperation in the Western Hemisphere in the mid-twentieth century: the historical origins and development of the inter-American system; the perfecting of the security structure; and, most important, the functioning of the system under test by controversies among the member nations, and by two world wars, the Korean emergency, and the aggressive threats of international Communism. Particular attention is given to the Cuban situation. This volume was the first to recognize, boldly and imaginatively, the overwhelming influence wielded in the OAS by the powerful and wealthy United States. This elastic association of one Great Power and twenty small states, based on a mutuality of interests and a common devotion to the principles of civilized international behavior, can be said to have reached full maturity in 1948 with the adoption of the OAS charter, which articulated the goals toward which it had been striving for fifty-eight years: sovereign equality, nonintervention, and consultation for the peaceful solution of disputes and for hemisphere defense. Ironically, just when the Good Neighbor Policy and the rise of Hitler seemed to have cemented inter-American relations, breaks in the solidarity began to appear. World War II produced new forces destined to profoundly alter the bases and objectives of inter-American cooperation. The “be good” policy began to change to a “do good” policy, and in diplomatic discussions, economic measures began to eclipse those concerned with peril to the peace and security of the hemisphere.

Book Gender Migration and the Intergenerational Transfer of Human Wellbeing

Download or read book Gender Migration and the Intergenerational Transfer of Human Wellbeing written by Katie Wright and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses how human wellbeing is constructed and transferred intergenerationally in the context of international migration. Research on intergenerational transmission (IGT) has tended to focus on material asset transfers prompting calls to balance material asset analysis with that of psychosocial assets – including norms, values attitudes and behaviors. Drawing on empirical research undertaken with Latin American migrants in London, Katie Wright sets out to redress the balance by examining how far psychosocial transfers may be used as a buffer to mediate the material deprivations that migrants face via adoption of a gender, life course and human wellbeing perspective.

Book excerpt: A “blistering exposé” of the USA’s secret history of financial, political, and cultural exploitation of Latin America in the 20th century, with a new introduction (Publishers Weekly). What happened when a wealthy industrialist and a visionary evangelist unleashed forces that joined to subjugate an entire continent? Historians Gerard Colby and Charlotte Dennett tell the story of the forty-year campaign led by Standard Oil scion Nelson Rockefeller and Wycliffe Bible Translators founder William Cameron Townsend to establish a US imperial beachhead in Central and South America. Beginning in the 1940s, future Vice President Rockefeller worked with the CIA and allies in the banking industry to prop up repressive governments, devastate the Amazon rain forest, and destabilize local economies—all in the name of anti-Communism. Meanwhile, Townsend and his army of missionaries sought to undermine the belief systems of the region’s indigenous peoples and convert them to Christianity. Their combined efforts would have tragic and long-lasting repercussions, argue the authors of this “well-documented” (Los Angeles Times) book—the product of eighteen years of research—which legendary progressive historian Howard Zinn called “an extraordinary piece of investigative history. Its message is powerful, its data overwhelming and impressive.”
