Book From Lead Mines to Gold Fields

Download or read book From Lead Mines to Gold Fields written by Henry Taylor and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Taylor’s long life (1825–1931) gave him an unusual perspective on change in American society. During his lifetime, the West was largely settled. America fought wars with Mexico and Spain, was nearly torn apart by a civil conflict, and then joined allies across the sea in World War I. Inventions proliferated (trains, cars, airplanes, to name a few), and twenty-six presidents served in office. Taylor’s life also exemplifies the mobile American lifestyle. His family moved several times before he left the lead mines of Wisconsin for the gold fields of California during the early 1850s. Taylor’s account of his journey across the western continent in search of fortune provides an arresting and detailed look at the dangers of the trail. His account of his move to western Nebraska in 1878 offers insight into the problems and successes of the early homesteaders and settlers. The latter portions of the autobiography concern his later travels and his reflections on his long life. With wit and a keen sense of character, Taylor began to record his life story when he was 80 and completed it at the age of 103. Donald L. Parman has organized and annotated Taylor’s story, supplying an introduction and information on people, places, and events in the text.

This book was released on 2016-02-08 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gold was known by the Indians to exist in the United States long before the white people discovered it, but unlike the Indians of Mexico, the more northern natives did not make elaborate use of it, and it did not seriously attract the attention of the settlers until shortly before the beginning of the nineteenth century. No very important mining, however, was done until after 1800, when a little gold began to be obtained in North Carolina. Long before that time the gold of California had also been known to the natives and to the Franciscan monks, but that country then belonged to Mexico and was not taken by the United States until 1846...

Book excerpt: "This book explores Native American and Euro-American lead mining in the Midwest. As Europeans flooded North America and moved westward, their own mining practices were greatly informed by Native American mining methods already in place. And while many researchers have explored gold, silver, and copper mining and smelting, lead has not received much scholarly attention, despite a long history of Native American and European desire for the ore. Chambers reflects on how early mining techniques affected the culture clash between Native Americans and European colonists, all the while tracking the impact increased mining had on the environment of what would become the states of Illinois and Missouri"--
