Book Literary Translation Reception and Transfer

Download or read book Literary Translation Reception and Transfer written by Norbert Bachleitner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.

Book Heat Transfer

Download or read book Heat Transfer written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat Transfer: Current Applications of Air Conditioning deals with problems and applications of air conditioning. The discussions are organized around non-stationary heat transfer through walls; study of confined rooms or enclosures; calculation of cooling loads; heat transfer with two-phase refrigerants; measurement of thermal conductivity and water vapour permeability of insulating materials; and tests on air handling equipment (room air-conditioners, induction or fan coil air-conditioners). This book is comprised of 60 chapters and begins with an assessment of the unit-system controversy in the United States and the quest for an ultimate resolution. The following chapters explore the resolution of conductive heat transfer problems using the finite element method; thermal behavior of composite walls under transient conditions; thermal and electrical models for solving problems of non-stationary heat transfer through walls; and use of a radiometer to measure the average temperature of a wall. Experimental results for mixed air convection along a vertical surface are also presented. This monograph will be a valuable resource for electronics engineers.

Book Music Theater and Cultural Transfer

Download or read book Music Theater and Cultural Transfer written by Annegret Fauser and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opera and musical theater dominated French culture in the 1800s, and the influential stage music that emerged from this period helped make Paris, as Walter Benjamin put it, the “capital of the nineteenth century.” The fullest account available of this artistic ferment and its international impact, Music, Theater, and Cultural Transfer explores the diverse institutions that shaped Parisian music and extended its influence across Europe, the Americas, and Australia. The contributors to this volume, who work in fields ranging from literature to theater to musicology, focus on the city’s musical theater scene as a whole rather than on individual theaters or repertories. Their broad range enables their collective examination of the ways in which all aspects of performance and reception were affected by the transfer of works, performers, and management models from one environment to another. By focusing on this interplay between institutions and individuals, the authors illuminate the tension between institutional conventions and artistic creation during the heady period when Parisian stage music reached its zenith.

Book Migration and Mobility in the Early Roman Empire

Download or read book Migration and Mobility in the Early Roman Empire written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently migration did not occupy a prominent place on the agenda of students of Roman history. Various types of movement in the Roman world were studied, but not under the heading of migration and mobility. Migration and Mobility in the Early Roman Empire starts from the assumption that state-organised, forced and voluntary mobility and migration were intertwined and should be studied together. The papers assembled in the book tap into the remarkably large reservoir of archaeological and textual sources concerning various types of movement during the Roman Principate. The most important themes covered are rural-urban migration, labour mobility, relationships between forced and voluntary mobility, state-organised movements of military units, and familial and female mobility. Contributors are: Colin Adams, Seth G. Bernard, Christer Bruun, Paul Erdkamp, Lien Foubert, Peter Garnsey, Saskia Hin, Claire Holleran, Tatiana Ivleva, Luuk de Ligt, Elio Lo Cascio, Tracy L. Prowse, Saskia T. Roselaar, Laurens E. Tacoma, Rolf A. Tybout, Greg Woolf, and Andrea Zerbini.

Book Autocratic and Democratic External Influences in Post Soviet Eurasia

Download or read book Autocratic and Democratic External Influences in Post Soviet Eurasia written by Anastassia Obydenkova and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Ukrainian Crisis shows both political regimes and national borders in Eurasia are still in a state of flux. Bringing together literatures on the external influences of democratization, the post-Soviet space and support for autocracy Autocratic and Democratic External influences in Post-Soviet Eurasia provides a comprehensive overview of the interaction of domestic and international politics during times of regime transition. Demonstrating the interplay of these forces the book explores the rich variation in motives and channels of autocratic and democratic influences. International scholars consider two channels of external influence on regime transition; the role of supranational organizations established by non-democracies and the role of non-governmental organizations and through a set of carefully chosen case studies offer a new theoretical discussion on the phenomenon of multi-level regime transition.

Book excerpt: Plant Physiology: A Treatise, Volume VIB: Physiology of Development: The Hormones focuses on the history and status of the hormone concept in plant physiology. This book considers the responses of plant cells, tissues, and organs to regulatory substances that may be naturally occurring, exogenously applied, or even synthetic in their origin. References to auxins and other plant hormones, or regulatory substances, are made throughout at levels that extend from cell division and cell enlargement, cell physiology and metabolism, to morphogenesis and reproduction. This volume begins with an introduction to naturally occurring plant hormones ranging from auxins to gibberellins, cytokinins, and ethylene. This book also looks at some of the clearest and best studied cases where growth is controlled by interactions between two or more hormones. The concept of hormone action in plants is discussed, along with methods of auxin bioassay and the nature and metabolism of indole auxins. The physiological actions, transport, and mode of action of auxins are described, followed by an overview of naturally occurring growth inhibitors such as phenols, flavonoids, and abscisic acid. This book is intended for researchers, students, and specialists in related fields who wish to gain insight on the concepts and research trends in plant hormones.
