Book excerpt: Medical technology meets rural, Amish values of simplicity, home health remedies, and unwavering faith in divine providence when a country-boy-turned-country doctor returns to his roots in Ohio. **This new edition is updated with a new preface and never-before-shared details about the tragedy of the Nickel Mines school shooting as well as the incredible forgiveness displayed by the Amish community.** House Calls and Hitching Posts is a sometimes humorous and often intimate account of Dr. Elton Lehman's thirty-six years practicing medicine among the Amish of Wayne, Holmes, and surrounding counties in Ohio, for which he was named Country Doctor of the Year. Now you can witness house calls and private moments between doctors and patients. Joe brings his dismembered fingers to the office in a coffee can filled with kerosene. Katie delivers a boy for the doctor's first home-birth. And Davy rallies to overcome a life-threatening illness at birth only to be crushed under a tractor wheel at three years old. Hoover captures in sometimes local vernacular the joys and dilemmas of a family practitioner among a rural and predominantly-Amish community. Includes a gallery of photographs from Dr. Lehman's distinguished career.

Download or read book East Amwell written by and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bordered by the Sourland Mountains, East Amwell's fertile valley farmlands have been attracting settlers since 1720. The village of Ringoes, Hunterdon County's oldest known settlement, was founded at the intersection of two Native American trails that became major crossroads: the Trenton-Easton Turnpike and the Old York Road from Philadelphia to New York. Early residents included Johann Peter Rockefeller, ancestor of John D. Rockefeller, and John Ringo, rumored to have buried treasure in town. During the Revolutionary War, the Sons of Liberty gathered at Ringoes Tavern, the Marquis de Lafayette recuperated nearby at Landis House, and Capt. John Schenck led an ambush on British dragoons near his Amwell home. Houses, mills, taverns, and general stores sprung up in Ringoes and smaller hamlets, as first the stagecoach and then the railroad brought prosperity and industry to this rural township. In 1932, what journalist H. L. Mencken called "the biggest story since the Resurrection" unfolded in East Amwell when Charles Lindbergh's son was kidnapped from his estate.
Download or read book Burlington written by Jean M. Martin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located on the Farmington River, Burlington is a place of natural beauty, with five mountains and valleys filled with brooks, forests, and stone walls. Most of the area's earliest settlers came from England to Hartford and then followed the river, with its fertile banks and meadowlands, into the West Woods or Great Forest, as Burlington was known at the time. The town was incorporated in 1745 and was named Burlington in 1806. Burlington shows the faces of earlier generations of the same families who live in these hills and valleys today. It depicts the homes, barns, orchards, fields, schoolhouses, and mills when they were thriving with life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book captures the tenor of everyday situations as well as the drama of the Blizzard of 1888 and the flood of 1955.

Download or read book British Columbia by the Road written by Ben Bradley and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In British Columbia by the Road, Ben Bradley takes readers on an unprecedented journey through the history of roads, highways, and motoring in British Columbia’s Interior, a remote landscape composed of plateaus and interlocking valleys, soaring mountains and treacherous passes. Challenging the idea that the automobile offered travellers the freedom of the road and a view of unadulterated nature, Bradley shows that an array of interested parties – boosters, businessmen, conservationists, and public servants – manipulated what drivers and passengers could and should view from the road. When it came to roads and highways, planners and builders had two concerns: grading or paving a way through “the wilderness” and opening pathways to new parks and historic sites. They understood that the development of a modern road network would lead to new ways of perceiving BC and its environment. Although cars and roads promised freedom, they offered drivers a curated view of the landscape that shaped the province’s image in the eyes of residents and visitors alike.

Download or read book Algonac and Clay Township written by Gary R. Mitchell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as 1615, Frenchmen settled along the St. Clair River in the area now known as Algonac and Clay Township to trade furs with Native Americans. Despite Louis XIV's determination to build a colonial empire in this region, the French "fleur-de-lis" was replaced by the British Union Jack in 1760 and then by the American "Stars and Stripes" in 1783, making it one of the few regions in Michigan to have flown the flags of three nations. Following the decline of the fur trade, three major industries--lumber, boatbuilding, and salt production--provided pioneers with the means to amass fortunes. By the 19th century, Algonac and Clay Township had produced 47 sailboats and 26 steamboats, including the 221-ton steamer Philo Parsons in 1861; this large vessel was captured by Confederates in 1864 during the Civil War. The region is also famous for Gar Wood's Miss America boats and Chris Smith's Chris-Craft boat company.

Book excerpt: Robert Walton’s first novel takes us back to 1976. Harry Thursday, an archaeologist, is trying to forget the violent death of his wife. An expedition to find a tomb of an ancient Inca king in the Chilean Andes ends with the discovery of a rich hoard of precious gems and trinkets, and the sudden death of the team’s leader. On the way home, Harry and his wife are robbed of their find, and Harry finds himself alone on a troller bound for Panama after his beloved wife falls overboard during a heavy squall. 1978, Harry is on a camping trip with his best friend Conner in the wild mountains of North-west Wyoming. They come upon a bawdyhouse in the middle of nowhere. CJ, one of the girls, takes to Harry and runs away with them, much to the angst of the pimp Skinny, who goes on a wild killing spree to bring her back. Separated from Conner during a sudden blizzard, they must fend for themselves in the shadows of the Grand Teton Mountains. Wounded by Skinny, Harry battles an infection and fever and it is up to CJ to find the cabin used by the bordello to entertain customers. While they wait for the storm to end, Harry discovers the secret CJ is holding, and why her pimp wants her back, and then it is only a matter of time before the final standoff between Harry’s destiny and his terrible past. "Bob Walton's first novel is a well-written, action-packed thriller, with enough twists and surprises to keep you turning the page. I thoroughly enjoyed it." -- Carmen Finestra (Producer of Home Improvement)
Download or read book Humboldt County written by Pat Baker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Humboldt County begins with a settlement of progressive dissenters and New England conservatives in north central Iowa. It is the tale of land-starved Scandinavian and Northern European immigrants who traveled to the area seeking rich soil for their farms. Early settlement in the county began in 1854, and Dakota City became the county seat. In 1863, the Reverend Stephen H. Taft brought a colony of his followers to form Springvale, now the city of Humboldt. After the coming of the railroad in 1879, the county prospered from the sale of agricultural products and equipment. Today, new industries are attracted to Humboldt County's skilled labor force, work ethic, and high quality of life. The combination of high-tech school facilities and a wide range of recreational opportunities attracts thousands of people every year.
