Book excerpt: An instant #1 New York Times bestseller! This “timely and compelling” (Kirkus Reviews) middle grade novel about courage, hope, and resilience follows an Asian American boy fighting to keep his family together and stand up to racism during the initial outbreak of the coronavirus. When the coronavirus hits Hong Kong, ten-year-old Knox Wei-Evans’s mom makes the last-minute decision to move him and his siblings back to California, where they think they will be safe. Suddenly, Knox has two days to prepare for an international move—and for leaving his dad, who has to stay for work. At his new school in California, Knox struggles with being the new kid. His classmates think that because he’s from Asia, he must have brought over the virus. At home, Mom just got fired and is panicking over the loss of health insurance, and Dad doesn’t even know when he’ll see them again, since the flights have been cancelled. And everyone struggles with Knox’s blurting-things-out problem. As racism skyrockets during COVID-19, Knox tries to stand up to hate, while finding his place in his new country. Can you belong if you’re feared; can you protect if you’re new? And how do you keep a family together when you’re oceans apart? Sometimes when the world is spinning out of control, the best way to get through it is to embrace our own lovable uniqueness.

Book Where to from Here

Download or read book Where to from Here written by Brian Grogan and published by New City Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you've ever felt challenged as a Christian to say what you believe about life after death, you will find intelligent proposals here. Fr. Grogan's deep knowledge of the current scholarship on subjects like judgment, heaven, hell and purgatory is matched by his skill at clearly presenting insights through stories and examples. This book begins with the idea that every inhabitant of this planet contributes to the shaping of God's project - the life of the world to come - and it emphasizes that the relationships between God and ourselves endure eternally. Rooting everything in this sense of ongoing relationship, Grogan poses and responds to questions such as: Could hell be empty? Can knowledge of the future transform the present? What will it be like to be fully alive? What will we do in heaven? He also makes a clear call to engage with God now in transforming our present relationships, so that everyone may become more truly/fully alive. This is the Christian gift to the world. "The next time anyone asks me about heaven, hell, purgatory, limbo, or anything related to what awaits us after our earthly lives have ended, I will recommend this excellent new book. Father Grogan's approach is wise without being preachy, scholarly without being overly academic and hopeful without being naive. He covers almost any question that a Christian might have about the 'last things' and does so by taking those concerns seriously, answering them carefully and grounding them in Scripture and tradition. Highly recommended." James Martin, SJ, author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything Eternal paradise, eternal torment... is there more to the Christian afterlife than these concepts? ... Father Brian Grogan discusses questions surrounding the afterlife, exploring many ideas that aren't normally presented surrounding the ideas of fate, our lives, and what ultimately lies ahead of us as human beings. Where to From Here is a fascinating read and addition to Christian and spirituality collections. The Midwest Book Review Read full review at Midwest Book Review Fr. Brian Grogan, SJ takes a fresh and intelligently satisfying approach to such well-worn topics as the general judgment, heaven, hell, and purgatory ... [He] offers a fresh and hopeful look at the Christian vision of life after death and is an excellent choice for group discussions on life after death. Liguorian

Book You Can Get There From Here

Download or read book You Can Get There From Here written by Bob Stanhope and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'd always wanted to travel, except that I didn't know it. After graduating from college, getting a job, and setting out on my own, I made some sporadic attempts to see some of the world. It took a while to figure out how and it was only after I got married that the two of us came upon a strategy that worked for us. This book is a collection of stories about my mostly modest opportunities to travel. This is not a how-to book. There will be no listings of the best places to go. You will not find even a slightly comprehensive guide to locations, National Parks, interesting cities, countries, or anything else particularly useful. However, I hope you will find some interesting and amusing stories about surprises that we encountered along the way.

Book excerpt: Don't fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don't act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like. (James 1:22-24 The Message) This book was written on author's life experiences. It focused on family hurts, pain, lies, deceit, and forgiveness. It brings the reader into the reality of family secrets: "What's done in this house stays in this house." This book shares a light at the end of the tunnel. It brings to the people-whether woman, man, boy, or girl--the hope that there's a way out and that past circumstances don't have to become our future. We can hold on to the thought that we can make it through any situation with the help of the Lord. Where Do I Go from Here? is also a book of mixed emotions. --Yolanda Griffin In this book are life-changing testimonies and many helpful insights on how to live past your hurts and pains. His love never dies! God gives us liberty even when we don't know how to grab it ourselves. Once we are set free, we are free indeed. I am a living witness that there is life after a divorce and that we are truly free to go after whatever God has for us. Hallelujah! --Angela Lambert I am not a book reader, but once I picked up this book, it was hard to put it down. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes life is stranger than reality TV. When Johnny Koester is laid off from his TV production job in New York, he moves west, landing in Los Angeles just as the ashes from the riots are settling. The only job he can find is in the burgeoning new field of "reality television," and suddenly Johnny's working like a dog on Shocking Hollywood Secrets and, better still, Psychic CrimeBusters. Unfortunately for Johnny, life at his new home in Hollywood Court View is even more bizarre than his work. Plagued from day one by his mysterious neighbor, Benny, Johnny soon finds himself following clues having to do with old baseball scorecards and Tony Bennett songs -- and inadvertently setting into motion a series of events that will reveal Benny's deep, dark East Coast past. The only thing going right in Johnny's life is Joan -- the director of a shelter for runaway teens -- who has a heart of gold and a body that makes him weak. He interviewed her for one of his shows, and sparks definitely flew. But will she still love him when Shocking Hollywood Secrets hits the air? Putting his own quirky spin on the classic tale of a New York transplant in L.A., Steven Schindler has penned a hilarious tale of underworld intrigue, whirlwind love, and the somewhat difficult birth of a TV phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When immigrants to the United States need to learn English, receive health services, open a bank account or get a work certification, US state and local governments or non-profit organizations usually assist as part of the process of supporting immigrant integration and, ultimately, citizenship. But over the past two decades, Mexico, and other origin countries of migrants have been increasingly filling gaps in these activities through their consular representations, particularly focusing on populations with precarious legal status. Put in the larger context of diaspora policies, these practices -- focused on establishing closer ties between the origin country and the emigrant population and protecting their rights through the provision of social services -- are one of the clearest manifestations of the reconceptualization of the boundaries of citizenship and the rights and obligations that come with it. This book looks at citizenship and immigrant integration from the perspective of countries of origin: specifically the processes through which Mexico and other Latin American countries are establishing programs to give their emigrant populations better access to education, health, banking, labor rights, language acquisition and civic participation in the United States. While immigrant integration is often assumed as an issue that mainly concerns the population and institutions of the country of destination, these cases demonstrate the role that origin countries play in supporting migrants' access to opportunities to participate as members of the societies they are a part of, challenging the limits of citizenship and sovereignty, and offering examples of innovative practices in the protection of migrants' rights. As an area of migration governance that is rarely discussed, this book offers a critical evaluation of these programs and their impact on emigrants, particularly on those who are undocumented or have precarious legal status, and the collaborations between governments and civil society groups on which the programs are based.

Book Getting from Here to There Power Politics and Urban Sustainability in North America

Download or read book Getting from Here to There Power Politics and Urban Sustainability in North America written by Ernest J. Yanarella and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2016-05-04 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting from Here to There? seeks to take the study of sustainable cities into a realm of analysis and critique that has not been seriously investigated in any explicit and systematic manner: the sphere of power and politics. Using detailed case studies of selected urban sustainability programs-some stillborn or short-lived, others celebrated, still others most promising-it focuses on the political agencies shaping them and the structural elements either impeding or facilitating efforts to build sustainable cities. To accomplish this task, the authors utilize three theories or models of urban power-growth coalition, urban regime, and neo-Gramscian hegemonic-to explore the dynamics of power and politics to better understand these cases and to derive important lessons about getting from here to there. These models offer valuable lessons for ongoing or future sustainable city programs, community or business groups, key policy makers, grassroots organizations, mayors, and urban planners involved in or contemplating moving urban sustainability projects forward, as well as students of urban politics and environmental and sustainability researchers.
