  • Author : Steven Ungerleider

Book excerpt: Steven Ungerleider's Faust's Gold is the stunning expose of the East German sports juggernaut of the 1970s and 1980s that forced young athletes to unknowingly take steroids. For nearly twenty-five years, East Germany's corrupt sports organization dominated international athletics. While the German Democratic Republic's secret "State Plan" was in effect, more than ten thousand unsuspecting young athletes--some as young as twelve years old--were given massive doses of performance-enhancing anabolic steroids. These athletes achieved miraculous success in international competitions, including the Olympics, but for many of them, their physical and emotional health was permanently damaged. Faust's Gold draws on the revelations of the ongoing trials of former GDR coaches, doctors, and sports officials who have now confessed to conducting ruthless medical experiments on young and talented athletes selected for Olympic training camps. It also draws on the extensive research of Brigitte Berendonk, who escaped from East Germany to begin a decade-long crusade to bring justice to her fellow athletes, and that of her husband, Professor Werner Franke. Berendonk's story, and those of her colleagues in the GDR, offers a unique insight into a bizarre regime. Faust's Gold is a true-life detective story that plunges into the dark, secretive world of the GDR doping scam, where elite competitors and their families are up against a formidable opponent: the East German secret police, known as the STASI. What emerges is a complex tapestry of the politicized modern Olympics that culminates in a powerful testimony to the massive wrong done by one Eastern Bloc nation to its world-class athletes.

Book Between God and Gold

Download or read book Between God and Gold written by Robert A. Wauzzinski and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart of Between God and Gold can be located in the survey of three representative nineteenth-century Evangelical figures: evangelist Charles Finney, scholar Francis Wayland, and philanthropist/clergyman Russell Conwell. The lives and thought of these notables are unfolded concretely, thereby showing how the Evangelical-Industrial synthesis occurred. Wauzzinski concludes the book by suggesting theological and economic alternatives, hoping to show in these examples that a third way between capitalism and socialism can be found. These possibilities are drawn from theoretical and practical sources and thus provide opportunities for greater social revitalization. An interdisciplinary methodology is employed throughout this work. The author works from the assumption that various fields of study, while analytically separated, do manifest a fundamental coherence.

Book Workers Neighbors and Citizens

Download or read book Workers Neighbors and Citizens written by John Lear and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workers, Neighbors, and Citizens examines the mobilization of workers and the urban poor in Mexico City from the eve of the 1910 revolution through the early 1920s, producing for the first time a nuanced illumination of groups that have long been discounted by historians. John Lear addresses a basic paradox: During one of the great social upheavals of the twentieth century, urban workers and masses had a limited military role, yet they emerged from the revolution with considerable combativeness and a new significance in the power structure. Lear identifies a significant and largely underestimated tradition of resistance and independent organization among working people that resulted in part from the changes in the structure of class and community in Mexico City during the last decades of Porfirio Diaz's rule (1876?1910). This tradition of resistance helped to join skilled workers and the urban poor as they embraced organizational opportunities and faced crises in wages and access to food and housing as the revolution escalated. Emblematic of these ties was the role of women in political agitation, street mobilizations, strikes, and riots. Lear suggests that the prominence of labor after the revolution was neither a product of opportunism nor one of revolutionary consciousness, but rather the result of the ongoing organizational efforts and cultural transformations of working people that coincided with the revolution.
