Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Aristotle described as the light of the intellect - the lumen intellectuale for the Scholastics - is brought into play in the epistemological discussion not just to develop an innovative theory of knowledge, but also to account for the constitution of the human mind, as a foundation for ethical principles, and as the starting point of a more comprehensive ontology, where the person is given his due place." "Rosmini links one subject with another, respecting each field at the same time, with a stunning example of an encyclopedic way of thinking. Philosophers aiming at renovation in continuity will also find in him a vigorous model and an unprecedented challenge."--Jacket.

Book Philosophical Trends in the Contemporary World

Download or read book Philosophical Trends in the Contemporary World written by Michele Federico Sciacca and published by Irvington Publishers. This book was released on 1964 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " "Previously published in Italian, Spanish and German, this study of contemporary philosophical thought now brings to English-speaking people a panoramic view demonstrating the "constant dynamic movement between the act of philosophical reflection and the history of philosophy." Throughout Sciacca's objective definition of all trends in contemporary Western thought runs his personal conviction that the principle of being is absent in modern philosophy. The author maintains that the humanistic quality of philosophy has given way to science so that philosophy becomes a sterile, quasi-technical discipline. In a clear effective manner he attempts to show humanism's proper place in the history of philosophy. Sciacca's polemical spirit against all movements which have departed from the metaphysical tenets that he wishes to see re-established is evident in his criticism of American philosophy. The translator, Attilio M. Salerno, warns the reader that he "may agree or disagree with Professor Sciacca's treatment of American thought; to some of us it may appear not only too astringent but even somewhat unfair. Be that as it may, the intentions if this author are constructive rather than destructive, for he clearly wishes to uphold, and possibly preserve, the philosophical and religious patrimony characterizing our Western civilization."Sciacca explores both narrow and wide paths leading to our contemporary philosophic milieu, offering analyses of historicism, relativism, phenomenology, existentialism, idealism, realism, naturalism, and neo-Scholasticism in the works of Nietzsche, Bergson, Unamuno, Croce, Kierkegaard, Spengler, Cassirer, Gasset, Husserl, Heidegger, Berdyaev, Barth, Marcel, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Benda, whitehead, Pastore, Maritain and many others, including Latin American philosophers."- Publisher

Book Routledge History of Philosophy Volume VIII

Download or read book Routledge History of Philosophy Volume VIII written by Richard Kearney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-23 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continental philosophy, as it has emerged in the twentieth century, is less a seamless fabric than a patchquilt of diverse strands. Phenomenology, hermeneutics, existentialism, structuralism, critical theory, deconstruction - these are some of the salient movements which have developed in continental Europe between 1900 and the 1990's, though their influence is by no means confined to geographic location. Continental thought has proved highly exportable, circulating far beyond the frontiers of Europe to provoke strong responses in the intellectual world at large. The fifteen articles in this volume outline and assess some of the issues and experiments of continental philosophy. The first five span the twin movements of phenomenology and existentialism, running from Husserl and Heidegger to Sartre, Merleau-Ponty and Levinas. Subsequent essays deal with specific currents of continental thought in such areas as science, Marxism, linguistics, politics, aesthetics, feminism and hermeneutics. A final chapter on postmodernism highlights the manner in which so many concerns of continental thought culminate in a radical anti-foundationalism. This volume provides a broad, scholarly introduction to this period for students of philosophy and related disciplines, as well as some original interpretations of these authors. It includes a glossary of technical terms and a chronological tube of philosophical, scientific and other cultural events.
