In response to the people's cries, God called a man named Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt into Canaan, but their journey took a dramatic forty-year detour when they failed to trust in God. In this study, pastor John MacArthur will guide you through an in-depth look at the historical period beginning with God's calling of Moses, continuing through the giving of the Ten Commandments, and concluding with the Israelites' preparations to enter the Promised Land. This study includes close-up examinations of Aaron, Caleb, Joshua, Balaam and Balak, as well as careful considerations of doctrinal themes such as "Complaints and Rebellion" and “Following God's Law." —ABOUT THE SERIES— The MacArthur Bible Study series is designed to help you study the Word of God with guidance from widely respected pastor and author John MacArthur. Book The Pilgrimage Pattern in Exodus

Download or read book The Pilgrimage Pattern in Exodus written by Mark S. Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underlying Exodus in its priestly redaction is a pilgrimage. Smith's new book starts by reviewing pilgrimage shrines, feasts and practices in ancient Israel. Next, it examines the two pilgrimage journeys in Exodus. In Exodus 1-15 Moses journeys to Mount Sinai, experiences God and receives his commission. In Exodus 16-40, Moses and the people together journey to Mount Sinai for the people's experience of God and their commission. Between lies Exodus 15, the fulcrum-point of the book: vv. 1-12 look back and vv. 13-18 look forward to Israel's journey to Sinai. Finally, the different meanings of torah in the book of Exodus are contrasted, and the book concludes with a consideration of Exodus's larger place in the Pentateuch.

Book excerpt: From Egypt to Canaan examines the fascinating record of the journey of the children of Israel across hundreds of miles of barren desert to reach at last their promised land. This book shows that their journey is our journey too, our Christian lives leading onward from the time of our salvation, "redeemed by the precious blood of Christ", to fulfilment of God's purposes for us in Christ, with many trials and problems on the way. These things "written aforetime were written for our learning", and it is profitable to read about them to learn again of the power and grace of God, the love and sacrifice of our Saviour, and the never-failing resources available for us as we travel through the wilderness of this world.

Book Unzipping the Law Exodus Annotated

Download or read book Unzipping the Law Exodus Annotated written by Booker T Jones Jr and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-02-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EXODUS-meaning Exit God said to Abram, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward, they will come out with many possessions. And as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age. Then in the fourth generation, they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." This is "The Sons of Israel's" exit story The sons of Israel were invited to live in Egypt by the Pharaoh. Joseph, son of Jacob called Israel, Viceroy of Egypt, oversaw Egypt's welfare. The kindness shown to Joseph and his family by the Pharaoh allowed the Israelites to grow unmolested in great numbers. A new king of Egypt who did not know Joseph or his contribution to Egypt's good health only saw foreigners living in his country. Concerned with self-preservation began a process of oppression and enslavement of the sons of Israel. Take note there are two things going on here, the deliverance of an oppressed people and the building of a nation of people complete with a set of rules to live by. In this book, you will learn of Moses, the ten plagues, the "Passover," passage through the Red Sea, the burning bush, Mount Sinai, Aaron the priest, the golden calf, the "Ten Commandments," "Manna," the bread from heaven, the Sabbath day, social and economic regulations, the Tabernacle, the breach of the "Covenant" and much, much more.

Book Did I Not Bring Israel Out of Egypt

Download or read book Did I Not Bring Israel Out of Egypt written by James K. Hoffmeier and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hebrew Scriptures consider the exodus from Egypt to be Israel’s formative and foundational event. Indeed, the Bible offers no other explanation for Israel’s origin as a people. It is also true that no contemporary record regarding a man named Moses or the Israelites generally, either living in or leaving Egypt has been found. Hence, many biblical scholars and archaeologists take a skeptical attitude, dismissing the exodus from the realm of history. However, the contributors to this volume are convinced that there is an alternative, more positive approach. Using textual and archaeological materials from the ancient Near East in a comparative way, in conjunction with the Torah’s narratives and with other biblical texts, the contributors to this volume (specialists in ancient Egypt, ancient Near Eastern culture and history, and biblical studies) maintain that the reports in the Hebrew Bible should not be cavalierly dismissed for ideological reasons but, rather, should be deemed to contain authentic memories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This close synchronic analysis of Exodus 1-2 looks at how the pericope's structure, language, focalization and management of information form its conception and judgement of its events and characters. A coherence of concerns is detectable in Exodus 1-2 with allusions to Genesis and the later chapters of Exodus. One chapter is assigned to each of seven narrative unities and deals in various ways with its narrative problems. The resulting eclectic choice of analytical tools includes the study of Proppian structural functions, repetition, public rhetoric, narrative speeds, order and symbolism.

Book The Book of Numbers In the Wilderness

Download or read book The Book of Numbers In the Wilderness written by Kenneth B. Alexander and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2013-07-20 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Numbers The fourth book of the Hebrew Torah (The Law) called the "Pentateuch" in Greek, is the Book we know as "Numbers." In the Hebrew Bible it is called "be-midbar" meaning "in the wilderness." In the Greek Septuagint version of the Bible (LXX) it is called "Numbers," and this name is now the usual title of the book. It is so called because it contains a record of the numbering of the people in the wilderness of Sinai (Chs. 1a 4), and of their numbering afterwards on the plain of Moab (Ch. 26). The Book takes up where Exodus left off in the saga of Israel in the wilderness. The Hebrew name for the Book "in the wilderness" is a better title for the Book. Although the book is noted for its two censuses, important events took place in the wilderness which relate to the present time. We will go through the book with the historical developments discussed first. The priestly elements and the censuses will be discussed at the later portion of the study. The Book explains why Israel had to stay in the wilderness for forty years. It was an 11 Day journey from Egypt to the Promised Land of Canaan. But spies sent in to access the land brought back a bad report and God in His anger punished all of Israel. The whole of Israel's stay in the wilderness generally portrays an unhappy people blaming Moses for their unhappiness. Time and time again Moses had to defend himself against unwarranted accusations. Ultimately it was God who had to stand up for him calling him "the humblest man to ever walk the earth." Time and time again God purposed to destroy the people for their grumbling and accusations. Each time Moses had to implore the Lord not to do that. Nevertheless God would send judgments among them in the form of plagues, fiery serpents and other expressions of His wrath. Thousands were killed. Moses had to stave off the extent of the destruction by bargaining with God not to completely destroy the people. This clearly shows that, even in this day, we should not grumble against God as He deals with our hearts. His chastenings are just. They are designed to get us into our Promised Land the Kingdom of God. We should follow New Testament quotations that relate to difficulties in our walks with God. For instance, as James said of the Christians of his day, which should have applied to Israel in the wilderness: "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance [steadfastness]. And let endurance [steadfastness] have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing" (James 1:2-4). And Peter said: "In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;" (1 Peter 1:6-7). And it was said of Christ Himself: "Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered" (Hebrews 5:8). The people of Israel had such great promises from the Lord but they, like us, sometimes could not endure with joy the hardship that is the Lord testing our faith. The complaining began in Exodus. They complained that the Egyptians came after them. They complained until Moses parted the Red (Reed) Sea. They complained on the other side because they had no water or food. In short their faith in God was at "zero" despite what God had done in delivering them from slavery and protecting them from the Plagues he brought against Egypt. Nevertheless the next generation made it to the banks of the Jordon River poised, after forty years, to possess the Land. OUTLINE OF CONTENTS The Book of N
