Book From Donatello to Alessandro Vittoria 1450 1600 150 Years of Sculpture in the Republic of Venice Ediz a Colori

Download or read book From Donatello to Alessandro Vittoria 1450 1600 150 Years of Sculpture in the Republic of Venice Ediz a Colori written by Toto Bergamo Rossi and published by Marsilio Editori. This book was released on 2022 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the lagoon city's golden age of sculptural innovation This volume analyzes key moments in the history of sculpture in Venice from the early Renaissance to late Mannerism (mid-15th to early 17th century), highlighting the complexity and richness of the stylistic and iconographic features converging on the city in those years of great renewal. Donatello's influence reached Venice around 1423, through the arrival of Florentine sculptors such as Pietro di Niccolò Lamberti and Nanni di Bartolo, but the great sculptor's stay for an entire decade (1443-53) in Padua, a city that was part of the dominions of Venice, was certainly decisive. Around the second half of the 15th century, the sculptors and architects Antonio Rizzo and Pietro Lombardo, together with the latter's sons--Tullio and Antonio--were protagonists of this period of rebirth. By the mid-16th century the dominant figure was Sansovino, a genuine "starchitect" of the Republic who disseminated the influence of Mannerism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Donatello The popular appreciation of Italian sculpture at the present time practically recognises one name alone, that of Michel Angelo; and if a vague consciousness exists of other names behind his, they are for the most part dismissed as "quaint," and of genuine interest only to the curious. Thus Donatello - the "scultore rarissimo e statuario maraviglioso" of Vasari, the object of even Buonarotti's imitation - is to-day generally reckoned as a mere Renaissance forerunner, and by no means as himself one of the Immortals. Even professed students of Art have more or less shared in this inability to recognise his greatness. Cicognara, in his "Storia della Scultura," when concluding his notice of this master, remarks; "But if Donatello had discovered all the possibilities of the Art of Sculpture, what would have been left for Canova to achieve!" Truly, a time which could accept the exaltation of Canova at the expense of Donatello demonstrated the inferiority, not of the latter, but of itself. Be the reason of this insensibility to Donatello's power what it may, it is now manifestly passing away. Students, at any rate, are recognising that the admiration accorded him alike by con temporaries and followers, such as Michel Angelo and Cellini, was well founded. Book Making and Moving Sculpture in Early Modern Italy

Download or read book Making and Moving Sculpture in Early Modern Italy written by KelleyHelmstutler DiDio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, art historians have begun to delve into the patronage, production and reception of sculptures-sculptors' workshop practices; practical, aesthetic, and esoteric considerations of material and materiality; and the meanings associated with materials and the makers of sculptures. This volume brings together some of the top scholars in the field, to investigate how sculptors in early modern Italy confronted such challenges as procurement of materials, their costs, shipping and transportation issues, and technical problems of materials, along with the meanings of the usage, hierarchies of materials, and processes of material acquisition and production. Contributors also explore the implications of these facets in terms of the intended and perceived meaning(s) for the viewer, patron, and/or artist. A highlight of the collection is the epilogue, an interview with a contemporary artist of large-scale stone sculpture, which reveals the similar challenges sculptors still encounter today as they procure, manufacture and transport their works.

Book Alessandro Vittoria and the Portrait Bust in Renaissance Venice

Download or read book Alessandro Vittoria and the Portrait Bust in Renaissance Venice written by Thomas Martin and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first examination of Alessandro Vittoria in English, this book is also the first devoted to his work in over 35 years, and provides a much-needed analysis of the chronology and style of Vittoria's portrait busts. Vittoria was one of the greatest sculptors of 16th century Italy, and the greatest portraitist in Italian sculpture prior to Bernini. The book both clarifies the work of a major Renaissance artist and places it in context by explaining how Vittoria, who produced portraits modelled on ancient Roman busts, was responding to cultural and political forces which fostered a classicizing style in Venice. Special attention is devoted to Vittoria's patrons, many of whom were collectors of ancient art. Professor Martin demonstrates that, even more than Palladio's buildings, the portrait busts of Vittoria were the foremost expression of classicism in Renaissance Venice.

Book Donatello and the Dawn of Renaissance Art

Download or read book Donatello and the Dawn of Renaissance Art written by A. Victor Coonin and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian sculptor known as Donatello helped to forge a new kind of art—one that came to define the Renaissance. His work was progressive, challenging, and even controversial. Using a variety of novel sculptural techniques and innovative interpretations, Donatello uniquely depicted themes involving human sexuality, violence, spirituality, and beauty. But to really understand Donatello, one needs to understand his changing world, marked by the transition from Medieval to Renaissance style and to an art that was more personal and representative of the modern self. Donatello was not just a man of his times, he helped shape the spirit of the times he lived in and profoundly influenced those that came after. In this beautifully illustrated book—the first thorough biography of Donatello in twenty-five years—A. Victor Coonin describes the full extent of Donatello’s revolutionary contributions, revealing how his work heralded the emergence of modern art.

Download or read book Donatello written by Charles Avery and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1994-12-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donatello (c. 1386-1466), the greatest sculptor before Michelangelo, was the most influential artist of the fifteenth century. Painters and practically every later sculptor, including Michelangelo, were deeply indebted to him. Much of later fifteenth-century painting in Florence stems from his work, and his influence extended to Venice. His heroic style created a new humanism that was a hallmark of the Renaissance. Written by Dr. Charles Avery, an authority on European sculpture, this concise survey explores Donatello's life and work for the general reader, tourist, or student. It gives a balanced coverage of his sculpture in different media and in the different cities of Italy and of the political, social, and religious background against which Donatello's contribution to Renaissance sculpture should be seen.

Book Renaissance

Download or read book Renaissance written by Francesco Caglioti and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The presentation of exceptional sculpture has been a priority here at Colnaghi since the gallery’s founding in 1760; from Colnaghi’s sale of Cellini’s Bust of Bindo Altoviti to Isabelle Stewart Gardner to, more recently, proudly playing a part in highlighting the importance of certain areas that had been long overlooked – most notably Spanish polychrome sculpture of the Golden Age and, in Colnaghi's Discovering Viceregal Latin American Treasures exhibition, bringing focus to the sculptures and treasures from what was then known as the New World. The present exhibition, however, is more a voyage of rediscovery than an exploration of new worlds. This voyage has led to some truly remarkable findings, in which we have been aided by the scholarship and connoisseurship of leading experts who have contributed the catalogue entries. The most exciting of these is undoubtedly that on the Donatello terracotta of San Lorenzo: one of only a handful of surviving works by the artist in this medium. Thanks to the remarkable detective work of Professor Francesco Caglioti, the terracotta has now been recognized as a long mis-attributed masterpiece originating from the Pieve of San Lorenzo in Borgo San Lorenzo, near Florence. We are sincerely grateful to the scholars and connoisseurs that have contributed to this exhibition and to the accompanying catalogue: Francesco Caglioti, Jeremy Warren, Peter Humfrey, Rosario Coppel, Jeremy Howard and Peter Marino. Colnaghi is especially honoured to be partnering with our friends at Venetian Heritage on their forthcoming exhibition From Donatello to Vittoria, 1450-1600: 150 years of sculpture in the Venetian Republic. The exhibition will take place at Museo della Galleria Giorgio Franchetti at the Ca’ d’Oro in La Serenissima in the Spring of 2022, and will allow visitors to compare our Tintoretto portrait with the bust by Alessandro Vittoria that depicts the same sitter. It will be particularly interesting to see Antonio Lombardo’s relief of the Death of Lucretia among the other great works from the Lombardo family workshop that reside within the Ca d’Oro. To see these masterpieces and these dialogues among the other great sculptural works of the Venetian Renaissance will, we hope, prove to be a special occasion. " -- Conaghi website
