Book From Consensus to Chaos An Historical Analysis of Evangelical Interpretation of 1 Timothy 2 8 15 from 1945 2001

Download or read book From Consensus to Chaos An Historical Analysis of Evangelical Interpretation of 1 Timothy 2 8 15 from 1945 2001 written by Stephen P. Dray and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelical interpretation of 1 Timothy 2:8-15 (certainly at the level of detail) has, in the period from 1945 to 2001, changed from one of received consensus to confused plurality. This thesis provides an explanation of this phenomenon by identifying and analysing the influences within evangelical interpretation that contributed to and shaped it. The first part of the thesis (Section A) is foundational. It establishes the validity of using the term Evangelical as an heuristic concept and provides, by means of a wide-ranging and unique analysis of published discussions of 1 Timothy 2:8-15, the necessary evidence to demonstrate the changes that took place. The major part of the thesis (Sections B and C) provides, for the first time, a detailed investigation of these changes. This is undertaken with a view to establishing: (i) the factors that contributed to establishing the early consensus, (ii) the circumstances which acted as catalysts to review and on-going change, and (iii) the developments which shaped the manner in which discussion subsequently took place and which contributed to the plethora of contemporary interpretations of 1 Timothy 2:8-15. In doing so it adopts a methodology which self-consciously combines both diachronic and synthetic approaches and is thus able (a) to isolate more effectively major trends and their development and (b) to provide a framework for a more rigorous analysis. The resulting study concludes (Section D) that evangelical interpretation of 1 Timothy 2:8-15 for the period from 1945 to 2001 was embedded in and shaped by contemporary social and ecclesiastical changes and by its own internal dynamics as it responded to these developments. In particular, differing responses to emerging theological, linguistic, historical and cultural discussions and to contemporary hermeneutical debates have proved decisive. While two broadly distinguishable (and conflicting) approaches developed, they spawned a plethora of different exegetical options and variant interpretations.

Book Women in the Church Third Edition

Download or read book Women in the Church Third Edition written by Andreas J. Köstenberger and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of women in the church is more hotly debated today than ever. Christians on all sides of the issue often turn to the apostle Paul’s words in 1 Timothy to justify their position, arguing over the meaning and application of this challenging passage. Now in its third edition, this classic exposition of 1 Timothy 2:9–15 includes contributions by Thomas Schreiner, Andreas Köstenberger, Robert Yarbrough, Rosaria Butterfield, and others, walking readers through the biblical text with careful exegesis, sound reasoning, and a keen awareness of the implications for men and women in the church. Academically rigorous yet pastorally sensitive, this book offers Christians a helpful overview of Paul’s teaching related to how men and women are to relate to one another when it comes to authoritative teaching in the local church. Includes a new preface, a new conclusion, four updated chapters, and two all-new chapters.

Book The Principle of the New Era in Galatians

Download or read book The Principle of the New Era in Galatians written by Ho-Hyung Cho and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is placed within broader scholarship's trajectory by explaining that νόμος in Gal 6:2 refers to "principle," unwritten law, rather than written law such as the Mosaic law and another law. Because νόμος diachronically and synchronically had various meanings in history, the context in which it is found is significant. Given the context of Galatians, while Paul negatively depicts νόμος as the written Mosaic law throughout the letter, he positively uses it as a device for striking the ears of the Galatians in the verse. Remarkably, 6:2 is in 5:13--6:10 called paraenesis, namely, exhortations that they should perform with the Christian principle of life made by the Spirit. Being led by the Spirit is the sine qua non for believers in Christ. All indications surrounding 6:2 show that the phrase, ὁ νόμος τοῦ Χριστοῦ in 6:2 means "the principle created by Christ," that is, "keeping in step with the Spirit." This principle results from the new era inaugurated by the crucified and risen Christ. In 6:2 Paul exhorts the people of the new era to conform to the new era's principle created by Christ.

Book Malines Continuing the Conversations

Download or read book Malines Continuing the Conversations written by Thomas Pott and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malines Conversations are often described as a precursor to the theological dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion initiated after the Second Vatican Council. The fruit of a friendship between a French priest and an English aristocrat, Cardinal Mercier's initial invitation in 1921 to a group of thinkers from both communions led to several rounds of discussion focused on issues that have long divided Catholics and Anglicans. Since 2013, an informal and international group of Anglican and Catholic friends, known as the Malines Conversations Group, has been meeting annually for discussion and fellowship. This volume represents the fruit of some of these conversations. The informal nature of the group allows for wide-ranging interrogation of diverse topics. The discussions acted as a kind of theological laboratory, enabling us to explore afresh some of the issues at stake both between and within our churches. This volume of essays includes contributions from sacramental theologians, liturgists, ecclesiologists, historians and philosophers. Most are actively involved in Christian ministry. Interspersed throughout are very short reflections from other theologians and Church leaders who have participated in the conversations as guests over the last decade. In the words of Rowan Williams' epilogue, the hope and prayer of the contributors is that 'this celebration and exploration of the heritage of Malines [might] give us again the grace of being surprised by the gift of Catholic communion.'

Download or read book 1 2 Timothy and Titus written by GARETH L. REESE and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a phrase-by-phrase commentary and exposition of the New Testament books of 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. This commentary is in use as a college textbook, yet is suitable for the lay church member. "Letters to Young Preachers" is a good way to designate the New Testament writings of 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. The churches where these preachers ministered were of different ages (the Ephesian church was 12 years old, while those on Crete were more recently planted), but both faced similar needs if they were to continue growing. These letters contain timeless instructions to preachers about what to emphasize in their ministries so the churches they serve and to whom they preach will be what Christ wants them to be. Leaders and churches who want solid and lasting growth would do well to hear these directives. This commentary is conservative and evangelical Christian in its outlook, yet skillfully examines the Scriptures from multiple theological viewpoints. Introductory Studies cover authorship and attestation, the place and date of writing, the original target audience addressed, and the original purpose for writing. Introductory Studies also discuss questions raised about the Pastoral Epistles by higher criticism - the historical, theological, ecclesiastical, and literary/linguistic arguments adduced against the genuineness of these epistles, and especially against Paul's authorship. Several Special Studies address important topics germane to the Pastoral Epistles. What did Paul teach about the role of wives and women within the church? What is the role of elders and deacons in the church? What is an evangelist's work, and is that role still relevant in the 21st century? Since this commentary presumes the God-inspired nature of all Biblical writing, the author seeks to harmonize the teachings of 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus with other relevant Scriptures, and also helpfully examines the original language in which the epistles were written. An annotated bibliography of other commentaries on 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus is included to encourage readers to extend their own studies. This volume continues the author's commentary series on the books of the New Testament. It is written from the unique standpoint of the Restoration Movement, a position which allows him to approach Scripture with no special theological doctrine or dogma to defend and explicate. This approach provides an unhindered freedom to listen to what the Holy Spirit would tell us within the pages of the sacred Scriptures. By deliberately employing the time-honored grammatico-historical method of interpretation, the Word of God is allowed to impress upon our minds the intent the Divine Author had in mind. The Restoration Movement, which delights to restore things the way they were done in the church we read about in the New Testament, surely needs to hear what the Pastorals say about public worship, the "must" of qualified elders and deacons, sound doctrine, Christian lifestyles, opposition to false teachers, and the qualifications and work of an evangelist. These epistles offer guidelines concerning the lifestyle the preacher is to live, and the epistle to Titus even offers a series of topics the preacher should address as he tries to nourish and help individual Christians and the congregation to grow. If preachers, elders, deacons, and church members will do things like the Pastoral Epistles suggest, perhaps the church in our century will have fewer spots and blemishes, and will be closer to the holy and blameless bride whom Jesus would present in all her glory to Himself (Ephesians 5:27). The author is Professor Emeritus of the New Testament at Central Christian College of Bible (Moberly, MO).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the study of Christian eschatological thought, virtually no attention has been given to past interpretations of the biblical phrase the new heavens and earth. John Duff uncovers the interpretations of this phrase that were extant in seventeenth-century England. These interpretations fall into two basic camps—those that understood the phrase metaphorically and those that understood the phrase literally. Some English divines believed the new heavens and earth referred to the new age of the gospel that commenced in the first century CE. At that time, God flung open the doors of salvation to Gentiles while at the same time bringing judgment to the Jewish nation for its failure to recognize and embrace Jesus as Messiah. This epic transition was fittingly described as a new heavens and earth.A second group of English interpreters believed the phrase stood for a yet future time when the political and religious circumstances of the world would change for the betterment of the church for one thousand years. The new heavens and earth stood for a future millennium in which Christ would establish his reign over the world prior to the day of resurrection and final judgment. Theologians who accepted a literal understanding believed the new heavens and earth described the renovation of the physical creation at the final judgment. Among this group, differences of opinion existed with respect to how much of the world would need cleansing, what creatures would be restored and of what use would a renovated world serve. The idea that the earth, and not heaven, would be the final abode of the saints emerged among a few obscure writers.

Book Christianity s Dangerous Idea

Download or read book Christianity s Dangerous Idea written by Alister McGrath and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2007-09-25 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "dangerous idea" lying at the heart of Protestantism is that the interpretation of the Bible is each individual's right and responsibility. The spread of this principle has resulted in five hundred years of remarkable innovation and adaptability, but it has also created cultural incoherence and social instability. Without any overarching authority to rein in "wayward" thought, opposing sides on controversial issues can only appeal to the Bible—yet the Bible is open to many diverse interpretations. Christianity's Dangerous Idea is the first book that attempts to define this core element of Protestantism and the religious and cultural dynamic that this dangerous idea unleashed, culminating in the remarkable new developments of the twentieth century. At a time when Protestants will soon cease to be the predominant faith tradition in the United States, McGrath's landmark reassessment of the movement and its future is well-timed. Replete with helpful modern-day examples that explain the past, McGrath brings to life the Protestant movements and personalities that shaped history and the central Christian idea that continues to dramatically influence world events today.

This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eschatology is the study of the last things: death, judgment, the afterlife, and the end of the world. Through centuries of Christian thoughtfrom the early Church fathers through the Middle Ages and the Reformationthese issues were of the utmost importance. In other religions, too, eschatological concerns were central. After the Enlightenment, though, many religious thinkers began to downplay the importance of eschatology which, in light of rationalism, came to be seen as something of an embarrassment. The twentieth century, however, saw the rise of phenomena that placed eschatology back at the forefront of religious thought. From the rapid expansion of fundamentalist forms of Christianity, with their focus on the end times; to the proliferation of apocalyptic new religious movements; to the recent (and very public) debates about suicide, martyrdom, and paradise in Islam, interest in eschatology is once again on the rise. In addition to its popular resurgence, in recent years some of the worlds most important theologians have returned eschatology to its former position of prominence. The Oxford Handbook of Eschatology will provide an important critical survey of this diverse body of thought and practice from a variety of perspectives: biblical, historical, theological, philosophical, and cultural. This volume will be the primary resource for students, scholars, and others interested in questions of our ultimate existence.
