The main conflict in this field has been associated with the evolution of the concept and the definition of CSR. Even though this concept has a long and varied history, which arose centuries ago, the formal writing on social responsibility, however, is mostly a product of the past 50 years. During that time, there have been many papers published by academics and business practitioners. Bowen (1953) marks the beginning of the modern period of literature and argued that centralised power of big corporations had influence on the lives of citizens, by company’s actions and decisions. Davis (1960) became famous because he emphasised the correlation between social responsibility and business power and justified socially responsible business decision in light of a good chance of bringing long-run prosperity to the corporation. In arguing against CSR, Milton Friedman (1970) seems to be widely accredited. In fact, he does not dispute the validity of CSR, but rather argues that when these activities are carried out for reasons of self-interest, then they are merely profit-maximization under the cloak of CSR. He set forth that the social responsibility of business is to increase their profits and its managers’ responsibility to act solely in the interest of its shareholders (maximising shareholders-value). This being said as a short introduction to the academic development of CSR, highlights that CSR is not at all common sense and therefore needs further theoretically examination. Besides these debates in the academic world, there has been also a development in practise. The business world offers numerous examples of companies not only focusing on short-term profit without considering social and environmental issues. There have been an increasing number of companies containing ethical and moral values in their corporate strategy and considering their society and environment as important factors towards a long-term success. Successful companies such as Body Shop, Stonyfield Farm or Ben & Jerry’s have been establishing strategies which main focus relies on Corporate Social Responsibility and appreciated CSR as a business driver. The aim of this paper is to critically evaluate social responsibility of business in a global economy.

Solely promoting a company s CSR initiatives and its philosophy globally has not yet been attempted. My intention is to illustrate the possibilities of promoting CSR internationally, due to the fact of the rising interest in the subject and the resulting pressure from the outside world. To pursue this goal, general information about corporate social responsibility will have to be illustrated, along with two basic examples at the beginning, so the reader can understand the main framework of CSR. It is shown how companies can evaluate the potential that lie behind the implementation, demonstrating benefits for the company itself and other parties that can profit from CSR initiatives. Is CSR a product, a service or non of it? Is it possible to promote it as a whole? If not, how can something that is not a product or service be merchandized? These questions will be answered during the course of the paper. Possible problems of this approach during the analysis will be illustrated and swept aside with countermeasures. To demonstrate the possibilities of using CSR as an international marketing tool, the aspects which can be of use to this approach will be identified. The approaches are underlined by examples making it easier for the reader to follow. Moreover parallels of CSR aspects will be demonstrated to clarify the similarities between them. It has to be mentioned as well that there are approaches by companies to mislead consumers with false claims for their own profit. But countermeasures against these black sheep have been taken and the result will be revealed. What role does marketing really play for CSR? The relationship between a company s CSR philosophy and its possible marketing approaches involve different kinds of commitment which will be looked at in detail. But companies also have the possibility to find prominent partners for their efforts to show their social involvement. The aim of study was to investigate CSR communication and how it is perceived with a view to identifying how CSR can be communicated more effectively to consumers. The focus in this context was on relational CSR potentials and the effect of consumer-company identification as a main driving force behind relational CSR effects. In order to achieve this aim a comprehensive literature review was conducted to conceptualise the ideas on CSR, the CSR communication challenge as well the link between CSR information and consumer-company identification. Further, primary research was undertaken in terms of a consumer survey among German students in order to gain an understanding of consumer perceptions as well as to identify critical aspects of CSR communication. Results indicate that in spite of a general tendency of scepticism towards companies, consumers do accept and expect companies to communicate on their CSR activities. It also became apparent that interest in and support of the subject clearly exceed the awareness level, which suggests an unmet receptiveness regarding CSR information. In this context, women showed significantly more support and interest in the topic corroborating the established hypothesis of respective gender differences which was established within the theoretical discussion. As a conclusion of this study female consumers have to be considered as particularly receptive towards CSR information and as a particular valuable target for CSR communication. The high level of support in general and especially among women can be considered as a given basis to consumercompany identification. It implies the potential for perceived congruence between consumers’ self concept and company CSR values and also highlights the relationbuilding dimension of CSR and its opportunities for consumer-relationship marketing. This research suggests that CSR should be communicated more proactively as the majority of respondents stated that they ‘would like to know more about it’ and affirmed the acceptability of advertising on CSR as a proactive means of communication.

Hence, numerous other companies, also small and medium sized companies are currently asking themselves the questions: Shall we also invest in CSR initiatives? Why should we do that – just to do something? Is this still an instrument to gain a competitive advantage? Especially the last question implies the question, if consumers still believe in the basic idea of CSR initiatives, or with the overload of CSR initiatives, if they even show reactance and mistrust against such issues.

As this quote clearly demonstrates, the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is on the rise. Indeed, more and more companies are engaging in CSR-related activities such as cause-related marketing (CRM), employee volunteering (EV) or corporate philanthropy (CP). According to Bhattacharya and Sen more than 80% percent of Fortune 500 companies deal with CSR issues in the United States (US). In European countries such as Germany, the numbers of companies with CSR initiatives is similarly growing. Among those firms are famous examples such as Starbucks and The Body Shop as well as the German companies BMW or SAP. There are several reasons for this trend. On the one hand, companies are increasingly put under pressure to behave socially responsible from different sides. First, consumers today are more sensitive to business practices of companies and can exert their power by means of boycotts resulting in negative economic consequences for firms. This is especially the case in times of increasing media coverage and advances in information technology where bad business practices become more easily transparent. Particularly, recent corporate scandals like those of Enron, or Shell, among others, make a contribution to consumers skepticism. Then, globalization leads to new challenges for companies because on the one hand, they are operating in countries with lower standards of living resulting in higher needs for socially responsible behavior in the respective society. On the other hand, worldwide competition is being strengthened in markets, which are characterized by low levels of product differentiation. CSR offers a source of competitive advantage because it enhances the overall reputation of the company and provides a valuable basis for differentiation. Besides that, companies are feeling pressure by a rise in public standards for social performance (e.g. the United Nations Global Compact).
