Book Through My Viewfinder

Download or read book Through My Viewfinder written by Willem Bakhuys Roozeboom and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marguerite, Bill's wife once told him "Living with you has never been easy but it surely has never been dull", an apt description of the contents of this book. As a Documentary Film Producer his world wide assignments are all fascinating adventures. His most exciting exploits however occurred in the High Arctic where he worked for 14 years enduring "Bug infested summers" and minus 70 degree winters. For Canadians it is an "in depth" look at half of our landmass, the Arctic and the Eskimo's who live there. It is history lesson of the "White Man's exploitation of the areas recourses as well as the inhumane treatment they inflicted on the indigenous population. Seen from the Eskimo point of view it is not a comely picture, forced relocations onto barren beaches, hunger and starvation camps, brainwashing by over zealous Christian clerics, unemployment, the dole, drugs, alcohol, suicide, and their struggles to finally achieve governess over their territory, "Nunavut". The book might well be a textbook for young people who have aspirations for careers in the Documentary Motion Picture field. Keeping you equipment going is only half of the battle mere survival is the other half. That is what makes this book a fascinating read.

Book Paddling to Where I Stand

Download or read book Paddling to Where I Stand written by Martine J. Reid and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kwakwakawakw people and their culture have been the subject of more anthropological writings than any other ethnic group on the Northwest Coast. Until now, however, no biography had been written by or about a Kwakwakawakw woman. Paddling to Where I Stand presents the memoirs of Agnes Alfred (c.1890-1992), a non-literate noble Qwiqwasutinuxw woman of the Kwakwakawakw Nation and one of the last great storytellers among her peers in the classic oral tradition. Agnes Alfred documents through myths, historical accounts, and personal reminiscences the foundations and the enduring pulse of her living culture. She shows how a First Nations woman managed to quietly fulfill her role as a noble matriarch in her ever-changing society, thus providing a role model for those who came after her. She also contributes significant light and understanding to several traditional practices including prearranged marriages and traditional potlatches. Paddling to Where I Stand is more than another anthropological interpretation of Kwakwaka’wakw culture. It is the first-hand account, by a woman, of the greatest period of change she and her people experienced since first contact with Europeans, and her memoirs flow from her urgently felt desire to pass on her knowledge to younger generations.

Book The Canals of Britain

Download or read book The Canals of Britain written by Stuart Fisher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canals of Britain is a comprehensive and absorbing survey of the entire canal network of the British Isles - the first of its kind. It provides a fascinating insight into the linked up waterways as well as the isolated cuts and quiet waters which may not be fully navigable by larger craft. Infinitely varied, it passes picturesque open countryside, wild moorland, coastal harbours, historic industrial buildings, modern city centres, canalside public houses and abundant wildlife. Stuart Fisher looks at every aspect of the canals - their construction, rich history, stunning scenery, heritage, incredible engineering, impressive architecture and even their associated folklore, wildlife and art. Enticing photographs give a flavour of each place and places of interest close to the canals are included. For those who are keen to explore that little bit further, taking smaller boats to points beyond which others usually turn back, there is information on little-known parts of the system, offering a new insight into this country's unique, surprising and beautiful canal network. Attractive, inspiring and foremost a practical guide, this has proved very popular with canal enthusiasts and boaters wanting to get the most out of Britain's canals. This third edition has been revised to reflect the ever-changing landscape of Britain's canals, and includes many new colour photographs to help bring it to life.
