When not engaged with the enemy or drilling, a different kind of battle occupied soldiers boredom, hunger, disease, homesickness, harsh winters and spirits both broken and swigged. Focusing specifically on the local Confederate encampments, renowned author and historian Michael Aubrecht draws from published memoirs, diaries, letters and testimonials from those who were there to give a fascinating new look into the day-to-day experiences of camp life in the Confederate army. So huddle around the fire and discover the days when the only meal was a scrap of hardtack, temptation was mighty and a new game they called 'baseball' passed the time when not playing poker or waging a snowball war on fellow compatriots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a memoir written by a Confederate veteran of the Civil War. From the foreword: " I HAVE set down in the pages that follow some of my experiences and observations during my service with the Army of Northern Virginia, first as a private soldier, then as a staff officer, and finally as a chaplain in the field. I served in the ranks under Gen. Jos. E. Johnston and Gen. Thos. J. Jackson; as a staff officer under Brigadier-Gen. Geo. H. Steuart in the army of Gen. R. E. Lee; and as a chaplain in the Second Virginia Cavalry under Col. Thos. T. Munford, in the brigade of Gen. Fitzhugh Lee. It has not been my purpose to write a history of the campaigns in which I took so humble a part, but simply to present a few pen and ink sketches of the life and experience of a Confederate soldier, in the hope that I may thereby contribute in some small degree to a better understanding of the spirit of the epoch--both of the soldiers who fought the battles, and of the people on whose behalf they dared and suffered what they did. In telling this plain and unvarnished story I have been aided by the diary, or rather the diaries, which I kept during the war, and from which I have freely quoted, just as they were written, without recasting the sentences, or improving the style, or toning down the sentiments they contain. The thoughts and the opinions expressed, and the often crude form in which they are cast, are just those of a young soldier, jotted down on the march, or by the camp-fire, or in the quiescent intervals of battle, without any thought that they would ever be put into print. This I have done believing that I would thus best attain my object, --to show the mind and the life of the Confederate soldier as they were while the struggle was going on. But there was a hiatus in my material. My diary for the larger part of one of the four years of the war was lost, and therefore I have omitted those months from my narrative. I have also tried to give the point of view of the young men of the South in espousing the cause of the Confederacy, and to remove some misapprehensions still entertained in regard to the motives which animated the men who followed the banner of the Southern Cross. In connection with the Gettysburg campaign, I have undertaken to discuss the much mooted question of the action of Gen. J. E. B. Stuart, with the cavalry under his command. This I have felt constrained to do because of the view (erroneous, as I believe) presented by Col. John S. Mosby in his recent book on the subject."

This book was released on 2012-11-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To send forth this book to the reading public without some sort of preface would be doing violence to a very ancient custom,"a custom more honored in the observance than in the breach." We did not write this book for pleasure nor pastime, but to contribute our mite in the direction of getting into cold type that part of the story of the great war between the States, from 1861 to 1865, that is recorded only in the memories of the men and officers of the line, and if we succeed in entertaining the reader for an hour or two in our descriptions of great battles or pathetic scenes incident to the life of a soldier, or cause a smile to dance on the face of the old or young, like sunlit shadows chasing each other on the wavelets of a mountain lake, we will have done well. BY BE.V. P. PEEKIXS. The battle of Blue's Pond was fought a few days after the Bell's Mines Fight, between Colonel Sypert, commanding the Confederates, and Colonel Burgess, the Yankees. The latter was in camp at Morganfield when Sypert returned from Bell's Mines with fortyeight prisoners, whom he intended to parole in that city, but finding that the town had been occupied in his absence, he was compelled to go to Blue's Pond, a few miles west of Morganfield, where he established camp, paroled his prisoners, and sent them under guard north cf the Ohio. The next night he sent Captain Gaar to annoy the Federals, declaring that as long as they stayed in Morganfield they should neither eat nor sleep, as he intended to have his guns popping by night as well as day. After spending two nights without sleep, the doughty Yankee colonel said he was going to Blue's Pond after Sypert's head. They moved out in that direction, and had hardly reached the outskirts of the town before Sypert was informed of their plans. The gallant Confederate at once began preparations to give them a warm reception by moving his men across the pond which is about a mile long and very muddy, and only to be crossed in two places. Colonel Sypert formed his men on the north side of the pond in the woods, his men concealed behind trees and logs, and anxiously awaited the advance of the enemy. In a short time, we could hear the sound of moving cavalry and the orders given, and in a few moments a long blue line swept into the camp we had deserted a short time before. After a while they were convinced that we had vamosed and rode into the treacherous mud to water their horses, their line reaching a distance of seven or eight hundred yards. At this...

Book The Union Cavalry in the Civil War

Download or read book The Union Cavalry in the Civil War written by Stephen Z. Starr and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first comprehensive treatment of the subject, Stephen Z. Starr covers in three volumes the dramatic story of the Union cavalry. In this first volume he presents briefly the story of the United States cavalry prior to the Civil War, describing how the Union cavalry was raised, organized, equipped, and trained, and offering detailed descriptions of the campaigns and battles in which the cavalry engaged -- the Peninsula, Shenandoah Valley/Second Bull Run, Lee's invasion of Maryland, Kelly's Ford, Stoneman's May 1863 Raid, Brandy Station (Fleetwood), Aldie-Middleburg-Upperville, and Gettysburg. Starr focuses on the officers and men of the Union cavalry -- who they were; how they lived, fought, behaved; what they thought. Starr tells their story -- drawn from regimental records and histories, memoirs, letters, diaries, and reminiscences -- whenever possible in the words of the troopers themselves.

Book The Story of My Campaign

Download or read book The Story of My Campaign written by Francis T. Moore and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, Francis Moore appeared to be a perfectly ordinary, twenty-three year old man: a carriage maker in the bustling Mississippi River town of Quincy, Illinois. And there he might well have lived out his life in unadventurous comfort. But then the Civil War burst out, and Moore, along with most of his friends, like young men North and South, rushed to enlist in the army. His cavalry regiment soon set off for what proved to be four years of warfare, plunging him into harrowing experiences of battle that would have been unimaginable back in his small hometown and that uprooted him, body and soul, for the remainder of his life. Enter The Story of My Campaign, the remarkable Civil War memoir of Captain Francis T. Moore, which historian Thomas Bahde here offers in an original edition to contemporary readers for the first time. Moore began the war as a private in Company L of the Second Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, and was soon promoted to lieutenant and then captain of his company. He spent most of the war fighting guerillas in Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana. He fought at the battle of Belmont, Kentucky, in 1861 and raided Mississippi with General Benjamin Grierson in 1864. He also battled Confederate leaders, such as Nathan Bedford Forrest and Leonidas Polk. His unflinching chronicle of small-scale and irregular warfare, combined with his intimate account of military life, make his memoir as absorbing as it is historically valuable. Moore was also an unusually articulate young man with strong opinions about the war, the preservation of the Union, the institution of slavery, African Americans, the people of the South, and the Confederacy: his wartime observations and his postwar reflections on these themes provide not only a captivating narrative, they also provide readers with an opportunity to examine how the conflict endured in the memory of its veterans and the nation they served. The enormous social upheaval and staggering loss of human life during the Civil War cannot be overstated: the estimated 2 percent of Americans—or 620,000 people—who died in the conflict would be the equivalent of 6,000,000 people today. The Story of My Campaign offers an indelible account of this conflagration from the perspective of one of its survivors. It is evidence of a hard war fought—and the long hard life that followed.
