Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a follow-up to the popular "Cabin In The Woods," a collection of life experiences I had when moving to a rural town in central Connecticut. We took up residence in an old, rustic cabin, which sat deep in the woods on a hillside knoll. There was no running water, no bathroom, no heat and no electricity, only a huge stone fireplace. In the years that followed, we built a sizable house around that cabin, but God's "country education" never stopped offering me some unique classes in spiritual living. God blessed me with many fantastic learning experiences from those formative years. When I share them, people really enjoy the country settings, as well as the heart-felt lessons they bring. They stir their emotions and often bring back the memories they themselves have, when they were young and adventurous, too. This book is a follow-up to that book and is arranged as follows: "More Early Cabin Years" "The Teen Years" "The College Years" So, here's another bunch that God used to teach me about who He is and what He wanted for my life...I hope you enjoy them!

Book excerpt: In the foothills of South Carolina lies the beautiful, historic college known as Converse. It was founded near the end of the Victorian Age by several of Spartanburg's leading professionals who believed that "the well-being of any country depends much upon the culture of her women." Their vision of providing higher education to women has now been carried into a second century and has allowed Converse to touch the lives of thousands of people. Converse College is a pictorial tribute that honors one of the leading women's institutions in the Southeast. The volume is arranged in chronological order and offers varied views of campus architecture as well as individuals who have walked its grounds over the past 112 years. Vintage photographs show Wilson Hall as it first appeared before the fire of 1892 and how it reemerged afterwards; they show college founders, leaders, and teachers-those who contributed to the growth of the school and its students. Perhaps most importantly, the images within these pages celebrate the students of Converse College, not only by presenting their faces, but also by showcasing photographs taken by the students themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential history of the modern research university When universities began in the Middle Ages, Pope Gregory IX described them as "wisdom's special workshop." He could not have foreseen how far these institutions would travel and develop. Tracing the eight-hundred-year evolution of the elite research university from its roots in medieval Europe to its remarkable incarnation today, Wisdom's Workshop places this durable institution in sweeping historical perspective. In particular, James Axtell focuses on the ways that the best American universities took on Continental influences, developing into the finest expressions of the modern university and enviable models for kindred institutions worldwide. Despite hand-wringing reports to the contrary, the venerable university continues to renew itself, becoming ever more indispensable to society in the United States and beyond. Born in Europe, the university did not mature in America until the late nineteenth century. Once its heirs proliferated from coast to coast, their national role expanded greatly during World War II and the Cold War. Axtell links the legacies of European universities and Tudor-Stuart Oxbridge to nine colonial and hundreds of pre–Civil War colleges, and delves into how U.S. universities were shaped by Americans who studied in German universities and adapted their discoveries to domestic conditions and goals. The graduate school, the PhD, and the research imperative became and remain the hallmarks of the American university system and higher education institutions around the globe. A rich exploration of the historical lineage of today's research universities, Wisdom's Workshop explains the reasons for their ascendancy in America and their continued international preeminence.
