Download or read book From Bard to Verse An Anthology of Humorous Poetry written by Steven Pearlman and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an anthology of humorous poetry that has been 40 years in the making. I'm not going as far back as my silly limerick about a gorilla which I wrote when I was nine or ten but I do remember the pleasure I got in composing it and in making other children laugh with it. I suppose my 'serious' attempts at humorous poetry began at Bradford University where I was the unofficial resident poet at a fortnightly folk club in the cellar of the Catholic chaplaincy. I felt obliged to inflict my warped observations and tortuous puns on whoever remained in the room. I love the way a whole poem can grow from just one observation, one comment, one pun. I find that developing that idea and playing around with words, even parts of words, to be a deeply satisfying process. I use humorous poetry as a way of expressing my opinions, feelings or personality in a brief, easily accessible and hopefully entertaining way. Enjoy/endure.

Download or read book The Best of Ogden Nash written by Ogden Nash and published by Ivan R. Dee Publisher. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More of Ogden Nash's poems have come to light, both in the voluminous Nash collection at the University of Texas at Austin, and in family letters and papers. So his daughters have once again produced The Best of Ogden Nash, the definitive Nash anthology. Some of these new poems reveal a darker side of the poet; others are full of fun. But all display the talent of the man whose verse entranced America--and a good part of the world--from the time of the Great Depression until his death in 1971. While earlier collections were organized chronologically, The Best is arranged by subject matter: the subjects of Nash's poems cannot always be identified by his titles, so fans of a particular poem will not have to search for it in vain.

Download or read book Kyoka Japan s Comic Verse written by Robin D. Gill and published by Paraverse Press. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even readers with no particular interest in Japan - if such odd souls exist - may expect unexpected pleasure from this book if English metaphysical poetry, grooks, hyperlogical nonsense verse, outrageous epigrams, the (im)possibilities and process of translation between exotic tongues, the reason of puns and rhyme, outlandish metaphor, extreme hyperbole and whatnot tickle their fancy. Read together with The Woman Without a Hole, also by Robin D. Gill, the hitherto overlooked ulterior side of art poetry in Japan may now be thoroughly explored by monolinguals, though bilinguals and students of Japanese will be happy to know all the original Japanese is included. This Reader is a selection from "Mad in Translation - a thousand years of kyoka, comic Japanese poetry in the classic waka mode," a 2000-poem, 200-chapter, 740-page monster of a book. It offers a 300-page double distillation high-proof sample of the poetry and prose, with improved translations, re-considered opinions and additional snake-legs (explanation some scholars may not need). The scattershot of two-page chapters and notes have been compounded into a score of cannonball-sized thematic chapters with just enough weight to bowl over most specialists yet, hopefully, not bore the amateur and sink a potentially broad-beamed readership. Download or read book Mary Robinson and the Genesis of Romanticism written by Ashley Cross and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally coming to prominence as an actress and scandalous celebrity, Mary Robinson created an identity for herself as a poet and novelist of the Romantic school. Cross argues that Robinson’s dialogues shaped the nature of Romantic verse and went on to influence second-generation Romantics such as Christina Rossetti and Alfred Lord Tennyson.
