Book Neither Victim nor Survivor

Download or read book Neither Victim nor Survivor written by Marilyn Nissim-Sabat and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009-07-16 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Neither Victim nor Survivor: Thinking toward a New Humanity, Marilyn Nissim-Sabat offers a comprehensive critique of the interrelated concepts of 'victim' and 'survivor' as they have been ideologically distorted in Western thought. Framed by the phenomenological perspective of Edmund Husserl, Nissim-Sabat carries out her argument through an intense engagement with current scholarly work on Toni Morrison's Beloved, Sophocles' Antigone, akrasia, psychoanalysis, critical race theory, feminist philosophy of science, and Marxism. Nissim-Sabat ultimately proposes that a new consciousness, enabled by the phenomenological attitude, of the way in which ideological distortion of the concepts of 'victim' and 'survivor' helps to perpetuate victimization will empower us to find ways to end victimization and its anti-human consequences. The book's interdisciplinary approach will make it appealing to a broad range of students and scholars alike.

Download or read book Beyond Survival written by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformative justice seeks to solve the problem of violence at the grassroots level, without relying on punishment, incarceration, or policing. Community-based approaches to preventing crime and repairing its damage have existed for centuries. However, in the putative atmosphere of contemporary criminal justice systems, they are often marginalized and operate under the radar. Beyond Survival puts these strategies front and center as real alternatives to today’s failed models of confinement and “correction.” In this collection, a diverse group of authors focuses on concrete and practical forms of redress and accountability, assessing existing practices and marking paths forward. They use a variety of forms—from toolkits to personal essays—to delve deeply into the “how to” of transformative justice, providing alternatives to calling the police, ways to support people having mental health crises, stories of community-based murder investigations, and much more. At the same time, they document the history of this radical movement, creating space for long-time organizers to reflect on victories, struggles, mistakes, and transformations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender, Violence, and Justice is a volume of collected essays by an expert in the field of violence against women and pastoral theology. It represents over three decades of research, advocacy, and pastoral theological reflection on the subject of sexual and domestic violence. Topics include intimate partner violence, sexual abuse and trauma, and clergy sexual misconduct; controversial theological issues such as forgiveness; and, as well, positive frameworks for fostering well-being in families, church, and society. Framed by a foreword and an introduction that place this work in the context of new and contemporary challenges in theory and practice, these essays show an evolution of issues and frameworks for theology, care, and activism arising over time from the movement to end violence against women (both within and beyond religious communities)--while at the same time demonstrating an unchanging core commitment to gender justice.

Book Beyond Survival

Download or read book Beyond Survival written by Kofi Anyidoho and published by Africa Research and Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in the best of times, the artist is constantly reaching beyond the present; the severity of Africa's present situation of crisis must urge our artists even farther into their version of a new life. In Beyond Survival, some of the best interpreters of African Literature focus on the role of the creative artist as a critical assessor, confidence builder and inspirer to excellence. The central theme of this important collection of essays in inspired by the belief that given the severity of the current crisis of life for African peoples, and given the intuitive and cultivated ability of the creative artist to monitor and accurately capture the complexities of any human institution, close attention to the world of African and African-heritage writers should provide not only important insights into various dimensions of the problem, but also and perhaps even more crucial, subtle but reliable pointers to probable solutions. More than any other group of people, it is perhaps to the artists we must turn for a creative but ultimately realizable vision of the future. The contributors fall under five broad headings, beginning with an introductory section featuring three important addresses delivered during the 1994 ALA annual conference in Accra, Ghana, at which these papers were first presented, as well a specially commissioned essay in memory of the late Flora Nwapa, one of Africa's best known pioneer women writers. The four other sections present a total of twenty essays focussing on: Shifting Paradigms; New Life: Language and Artistic Tradition; New Life: Language, Literature & National Policy; and Resistance Strategies.

Book Essays On Surviving COVID 19 and Beyond

Download or read book Essays On Surviving COVID 19 and Beyond written by Dr. Jules Mitchel and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a culmination of thoughts and reflections triggered by the initial devastating wave of deaths from COVID-19, together with the mishandling of the responses and the manifestation of human fantasies, all of which were quite similar to what occurred during the Spanish flu pandemic at the time of World War I. Research on the history of plagues, wars, tyrants, and human behavior reinforced that there was "nothing new under the sun." As a biologist with an interest in evolutionary biology, I was curious to see if there were any insights we could learn from other species, but especially how mammals deal with behaviors such as competition, cooperation, empathy, and altruism. I discovered not only the well-known survival differences between the bonobo and chimpanzee but also how totally unrelated species can work together for the common good. One example is how the honeyguide bird in Africa helps humans find beehives and then how the honeyguide bird eats the leftovers. It also has become clear for humans to reflect that based on the complexity of societies and living organisms in general, there are no simple solutions to the survival of any species. However, one thing is clear: only through cooperation, empathy, and acts of altruism, like firefighters entering a burning building, soldiers confronting the enemy, and police protecting our schools, will the human species be able to live in harmony. Also, only by confronting selfish, greedy autocracies, plutocracies, and kleptocracies will the human species be able to survive on planet Earth.
