Book A Silk Purse from a Sow s Ear

Download or read book A Silk Purse from a Sow s Ear written by Mischka Zakharin and published by University Editions. This book was released on 1999-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publisher's description: A Silk Purse From a Sow's Ear is an enthralling blend of real life experiences, mixed with a nearly surrealistic sense of fantasy; at times, a warm and tender reflection of emotional and intellectual expression-- at other times, an absurd uprising of grand jocundity. Mishka Zakharin offers his unique perspectives on a variety of subjects, from the bitterness of unrequited love, to the passions of untamed sexuality; from life and death and the nature of the universe, to the sometimes blatantly disgusting functions of the human condition. Providing substance that is both darkly philosophical and divinely loopy-- an odd juxtaposition of spiritual wisdom and somewhat psychotic musings-- A Silk Purse From a Sow's Ear has a bit of something for just about everyone.

Book Quality Research in Literacy and Science Education

Download or read book Quality Research in Literacy and Science Education written by Mack C. Shelley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical models attempt to describe and quantify relationships between variables. In the models presented in this chapter, there is a response variable (sometimes called dependent variable) and at least one predictor variable (sometimes called independent or explanatory variable). When investigating a possible cause-and-effect type of relationship, the response variable is the putative effect and the predictors are the hypothesized causes. Typically, there is a main predictor variable of interest; other predictors in the model are called covariates. Unknown covariates or other independent variables not controlled in an experiment or analysis can affect the dependent or outcome variable and mislead the conclusions made from the inquiry (Bock, Velleman, & De Veaux, 2009). A p value (p) measures the statistical significance of the observed relationship; given the model, p is the probability that a relationship is seen by mere chance. The smaller the p value, the more confident we can be that the pattern seen in the data 2 is not random. In the type of models examined here, the R measures the prop- tion of the variation in the response variable that is explained by the predictors 2 specified in the model; if R is close to 1, then almost all the variation in the response variable has been explained. This measure is also known as the multiple correlation coefficient. Statistical studies can be grouped into two types: experimental and observational.

Book Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere

Download or read book Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere written by Jan Morris and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-10-12 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years ago, Trieste was the chief seaport of the entire Austro-Hungarian empire, but today many people have no idea where it is. This fascinating Italian city on the Adriatic, bordering the former Yugoslavia, has always tantalized Jan Morris with its moodiness and melancholy. She has chosen it as the subject of this, her final work, because it was the first city she knew as an adult -- initially as a young soldier at the end of World War II, and later as an elderly woman. This is not only her last book, but in many ways her most complex as well, for Trieste has come to represent her own life with all its hopes, disillusionments, loves and memories. Jan Morris evokes Trieste's modern history -- from the long period of wealth and stability under the Habsburgs, through the ambiguities of Fas-cism and the hardships of the Cold War. She has been going to Trieste for more than half a century and has come to see herself reflected in it: not just her interests and preoccupations -- cities, empires, ships and animals -- but her intimate convictions about such matters as patriotism, sex, civility and kindness. Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere is the culmination of a singular career.
