Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science of Anthropology has now arrived at a turning-point in its history. It is no longer a science of mere statistics and system atized data, but has become what it always professed to be, a branch of general biology. Therefore the present moment is espe dally fitted for looking back upon past achievement. Whoever casts a glance at the work of anthropological research in Holland, will probably feel some disappointment at themeagre results obtained, as compared with the immense amount of labour spent on the subject. Yet it is encouraging to remember that all pioneer-work requires great and prolonged exertion in preparing the ground, whereas perhaps only later generations will harvest the grain. What can be the reason that anthropological research in Hol land isstillso backward? Let us try to indicate some ofthe causes, and at the same time attempt to find means to insure greater success in future. Perhaps we shall be able to obtain good results with the old material.

Book The Netherlandic Presence in Ontario

Download or read book The Netherlandic Presence in Ontario written by Frans J. Schryer and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schryer’s central argument is that ethnic groups are as much modern “myths” as they are integral components of a socially constructed reality. Focusing on the large cohort of immigrants from the Netherlands and the former Dutch East Indies who arrived in Canada between 1947 and 1960, Schryer shows how the Dutch, despite a loss of ethnic identity and a high level of linguistic assimilation, replicated many aspects of their homeland. While illustrating and illuminating the diversity among immigrants sharing a common national origin, Schryer keeps sight of what is common among them. In doing so, he shows how deeply ingrained habits were modified in a Canadian context, resulting in both continuities and discontinuities. The result is a variegated image reflecting a multidimensional reality.

Download or read book One Europe Many Nations written by James B. Minahan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-07-30 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dominating world politics since 1945, the Cold War created a fragile peace while suppressing national groups in the Cold War's most dangerous theater—Europe. Today, with the collapse of Communism, the European Continent is again overshadowed by the specter of radical nationalism, as it was at the beginning of the century. Focusing on the many possible conflicts that dot the European landscape, this book is the first to address the Europeans as distinct national groups, not as nation-states and national minorities. It is an essential guide to the national groups populating the so-called Old World-groups that continue to dominate world headlines and present the world community with some of its most intractable conflicts. While other recent reference books on Europe approach the subject of nations and nationalism from the perspective of the European Union and the nation-state, this book addresses the post-Cold War nationalist resurgence by focusing on the most basic element of any nationalism—the nation. It includes entries on nearly 150 groups, surveying these groups from the earliest period of their national histories to the dawn of the 21st century. In short essays highlighting the political, social, economic, and historical evolution of peoples claiming a distinct identity in an increasingly integrated continent, the book provides both up-to-date information and historical background on the European national groups that are currently making the news and those that will produce future headlines.
