Book excerpt: Avoid Buyer's Remorse! Are you thinking of purchasing this book, or even using one of your precious Amazon Prime 'freebies' on the ebook version of it? If so, please spare a moment to take the following short quiz: 1. Does the cover of your preferred historical reading matter traditionally feature either a woman in danger of a 'wardrobe malfunction' or a man who has misplaced his shirt (or at least his buttons), or both? 2. When you say to your friends, “Oh, I just love Mr. Darcy!” are you, in fact, thinking of Colin Firth jumping into a BBC fish pond, rather than Jane Austen's intricate creation, who had been 'a selfish being all his life, in practice, though not in principle'? 3. Do you deplore the fact that Jane Austen was herself the daughter of a clergyman, and that, however delightfully ironic her writing and witty her observations, she insisted on adhering to the somewhat priggish view that a charming rake was not a hero, but a villain--and also demonstrated other symptoms of 'outdated morality'? 4. If you dutifully plowed through Mansfield Park, were you horrified to discover that Henry Crawford was not, after all, the hero? 5. And finally, like Winnie-the-Pooh, do you find it is “more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like 'What about lunch?'”--and, perforce, more fun to read them, as well? If you answered yes to all, or even most, of the above questions, DO NOT BUY THIS TITLE IN ANY FORM. You won't enjoy it, and, thus embittered by this needless waste of your time and funds, your only satisfaction will be to write a scathing review of a book that was never intended for your delectation in the first place. From the back cover: The year was 1805; the place, England. Napoleon was scheming how to wrest control of the Channel from the British Navy so that he might at last invade the island "nation of shopkeepers" that kept interfering with his plans to dominate all of Europe. Lord Nelson was chasing the Emperor's fleet across the oceans in a hunt that would shortly culminate in the battle of Trafalgar. But on a quiet estate in Warwickshire, "just near enough to Stratford to take a proprietary interest in its immortal Bard," Ann Northcott was much more concerned with her mother's schemes. Those schemes would send Ann and her friend Julia Parry far away from their beloved Merriweather, on a turbulent voyage into a fashionable London season. For both of them, it would prove to be a journey of discovery into the true nature of Friendship and Folly.

Book excerpt: Chris Landrum is about to have it all-an extended vacation, a second home at the beach, and early retirement in his fifties. There's only one glitch: murder is part of the package on the small South Carolina barrier island of Folly Beach, where eccentric residents live bohemian lifestyles in the shadow of historic Charleston. Soon after settling in Folly Beach, Chris is befriended by an unlikely cadre of quirky locals: a real estate agent who looks like an out-of-season Santa with an attitude; a waitress who shares rumors and effuses charm; a professor; a lovely, intelligent, and unattached reporter; and a president-quoting, tag-along companion. He is fascinated by the company of his newfound friends, the novelty of the strange island that they call home, and the contrast of it all with stately Charleston. But when Chris finds the body of a prominent developer and lands in the middle of the Folly Beach spotlight, he immediately becomes a threat to the killer-and his vacation paradise might be the scene of his own untimely death. Vacations aren't nearly as much fun when one of your new acquaintances is trying to kill you, and catching a murderer is not the normal way to spend an extended holiday. But on Folly Beach, what's normal?

It was a spacious piazza, the roof of which was supported by gnarled tree trunks, the bark and the knots carefully preserved so as to look rustic. The deep eaves drooped in a rustic manner also, and there were trumpet-vines and wistaria, and various other creeping things of the vegetable world, wandering about in a careful carelessness, like the hair of a woman when it is dressed most effectively. The lawn swept down rather steeply and stopped suddenly against a thick stone wall that was covered with ivy. Book excerpt: What if instead of meeting Mr. Wickham directly after her stay at Netherfield Elizabeth was once again forced into the company of Mr. Darcy? Could this chance meeting lead the stubborn Elizabeth and arrogant Darcy down a path to friendship and eventually love, without the obstacles of distance and misunderstanding they endured in the original? Although not without some pride and prejudice this story and its characters wend their way to a happy ending down a different road, encountering some new and some familiar difficulties. This approximately 49,000 word novella is low angst and true to the spirit of its inspiration. The second in my What if series, we are once again imagining what might happen if one detail from our beloved Pride and Prejudice were changed. How would this affect the rest of the story? Each book in the series is a stand alone.

Book excerpt: An acclaimed master of suspense creates a heroine you will never forget in this superbly chilling novel of a woman who begins a desperate undertaking that may transform her life--or end it. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOUR WORST FEARS AREN’T ALL IN YOUR MIND? Rae Newborn is a woman on the edge: on the edge of sanity, on the edge of tragedy, and now on the edge of the world. She has moved to an island at the far reaches of the continent to restore the house of an equally haunted figure, her mysterious great-uncle; but as her life begins to rebuild itself along with the house, his story starts to wrap around hers. Powerful forces are stirring, but Rae cannot see where her reality leaves off and his fate begins. Fifty-two years old, Rae must battle the feelings that have long tormented her--panic, melancholy, and a skin-crawling sense of watchers behind the trees. Before she came here, she believed that most of the things she feared existed only in her mind. And who can say, as disturbing incidents multiply, if any of the watchers on Folly Island might be real? Is Rae paranoid, as her family and the police believe, or is the threat real? Is the island alive with promise--or with dangers? With Folly, award-winning author LAURIE R. KING once again powerfully redefines psychological suspense on a sophisticated and harrowing new level, and proves why legions of readers and reviewers have named her a master of the genre.

She attended the public school of the town (then East Abington), and later taught school for two years. She moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1870, where she first wrote for a Philadelphia paper and afterward for the New York Evening Post and the New York Tribune. Later she resided in Wrentham, Massachusetts. It was not until 1887 that she became widely known through her A Vacation in a Buggy. Her work was reviewed extensively, as by the New York Times, but has lapsed into obscurity. She was an influence upon the young Canadian-American writer Mary MacLane, who became friends with Pool's "literary companion" (and, it is now believed, lover) Caroline M. Branson. Book excerpt: From the 100-part Penguin Great Ideas series comes a rumination on relationships, courtesy of one of the most influential French Renaissance philosophers. Michel de Montaigne was the originator of the modern essay form; in these diverse pieces he expresses his views on friendship, contemplates the idea that man is no different from any animal, argues that all cultures should be respected, and attempts, by an exploration of himself, to understand the nature of humanity. Penguin Great Ideas: Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves—and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war, and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked, and comforted. They have enriched lives—and destroyed them. Now Penguin Great Ideas brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals, and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are. Other titles in the series include Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince, Thomas Paine's Common Sense, and Charles Darwin's On Natural Selection.

There is elegant Miss L’Hommedieu, Gussie the witch, Leo the bibliophile, and beautiful Tarragon, who is unlike any girl Andrew has ever met in Manhattan. Andrew is entranced by these unworldly creatures and their simple life. Yet all is not well in Thale’s Folly.
