Book Animals Museum Culture and Children s Literature in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Animals Museum Culture and Children s Literature in Nineteenth Century Britain written by Laurence Talairach and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals, Museum Culture and Children’s Literature in Nineteenth-Century Britain: Curious Beasties explores the relationship between the zoological and palaeontological specimens brought back from around the world in the long nineteenth century—be they alive, stuffed or fossilised—and the development of children’s literature at this time. Children’s literature emerged as dizzying numbers of new species flooded into Britain with scientific expeditions, from giraffes and hippopotami to kangaroos, wombats, platypuses or sloths. As the book argues, late Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian children’s writers took part in the urge for mass education and presented the world and its curious creatures to children, often borrowing from their museum culture and its objects to map out that world. This original exploration illuminates how children’s literature dealt with the new ordering of the world, offering a unique viewpoint on the construction of science in the long nineteenth century.

Download or read book Canada Home written by Thomas E. Blom and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aged 26 and newly married, Juliana Ewing left England in 1867, bound for Fredericton, New Brunswick, where her husband had been posted to the army garrison. A famed children's writer and skilful artist, Juliana used her talents in chronicling for her family in Yorkshire her day-to-day experiences in the maritime city from Confederation to the withdrawal of British troops in 1869. In 101 letters, reproduced almost in their entirety, Juliana recreates the 'high colonial' society of mid-nineteenth-century Fredericton. Her letters unconsciously also reveal herself -- her courage, intelligence, gaity and, above all, her loving nature. Witty, perceptive, and dramatic, her letters reflect her ability as a prose writer of unusual sensibility.

Download or read book Dogopolis written by Chris Pearson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dogopolis presents a surprising source for urban innovation in the history of three major cities: human-canine relationships. Stroll through any American or European city today and you probably won’t get far before seeing a dog being taken for a walk. It’s expected that these domesticated animals can easily navigate sidewalks, streets, and other foundational elements of our built environment. But what if our cities were actually shaped in response to dogs more than we ever realized? Chris Pearson’s Dogopolis boldly and convincingly asserts that human-canine relations were a crucial factor in the formation of modern urban living. Focusing on New York, London, and Paris from the early nineteenth century into the 1930s, Pearson shows that human reactions to dogs significantly remolded them and other contemporary western cities. It’s an unalterable fact that dogs—often filthy, bellicose, and sometimes off-putting—run away, spread rabies, defecate, and breed wherever they like, so as dogs became a more and more common in nineteenth-century middle-class life, cities had to respond to people’s fear of them and revulsion at their least desirable traits. The gradual integration of dogs into city life centered on disgust at dirt, fear of crime and vagrancy, and the promotion of humanitarian sentiments. On the other hand, dogs are some people’s most beloved animal companions, and human compassion and affection for pets and strays were equally powerful forces in shaping urban modernity. Dogopolis details the complex interrelations among emotions, sentiment, and the ways we manifest our feelings toward what we love—showing that together they can actually reshape society.
