Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a childhood marked by loss and grief, H&ö lderlin studied theology in the illustrious company of Hegel and Schelling, before concentrating on poetry and writing his most famous work, Hyperion. But, afflicted by the pressures of life and a doomed love affair, he gradually went mad, and spent the final 36 years of his life in a solitary tower in T&ü bingen, cared for by a kindly carpenter. The younger poet Wilhelm Waiblinger, one of the few people to gain H&ö lderlin's confidence, visited him often. This is his beautifully written memoir of the stricken poet, a unique insight into his personality, sensitively translated by Will Stone.

Book Hyperion Or the Hermit in Greece H lderlin

Download or read book Hyperion Or the Hermit in Greece H lderlin written by Friedrich Hölderlin and published by Lebooks Editora. This book was released on 2024-06-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin (1770 — 1843) was a German philosopher, lyric poet, and novelist who managed to synthesize the spirit of ancient Greece in his poetic works. The novel "Hyperion, or The Hermit in Greece" can be considered an autobiography in letters sent by the character Hyperion primarily to his friend Bellarmin and to Diotima. The text is set in ancient Greece, but even 200 years after it was written, the words describing invisible forces, conflicts, beauty, and hope remain relevant. Who has not felt Hyperion's utopian longing for harmony with nature and God, free from alienation? "Hyperion" is part of the collection "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die," edited by Peter Boxall.

Download or read book Friedrich H lderlin written by Friedrich Hölderlin and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hölderlin's essays and letters constitute essential documents for an understanding of the transitional period from neo-classical poetics to what can only be characterized as a unique and, in its frequently experimental structure, essentially modernist poetics. This book contains virtually all of Hölderlin's theoretical writings translated for the first time. In spite of the great significance of Hölderlin''s ideas for contemporary critical thought, most of his highly important theoretical oeuvre has been unavailable to English readers until now. Here also are a number of letters which chart the development of Hölderlin's thought on issues that today remain fundamental to poetics and philosophy. The work's critical introduction discusses both the historical genesis of Hölderlin's theoretical writings out of the enlightenment as well as their systematic interaction with post-Kantian Idealism. Through interpretations of three short fragments, Pfau indicates that it would be insufficient to consider Hölderlin as the mere precursor of the great systematic philosophers of German Idealism--Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel. Instead, Hölderlin's earliest theoretical fragments already mark a turn away from the rigorous systematicity that underlies the philosophical discourse of his contemporaries. Hölderlin's theoretical writings may be the most seminal texts in the widely discussed interimplication of Idealistic philosophy and Romantic poetry and poetics.

Book The Young H lderlin

Download or read book The Young H lderlin written by Roy C. Shelton and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1973 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without exaggeration one might say that Shelton paints a whole, new picture of Hölderlin in his monograph. He is the first writer to present the young Hölderlin, not of the viewpoint of his later works, but objectively and unprejudiced. He makes use of the sources to reveal the young man, the student he was in this period of his life. The result is the first Hölderlin biography that is free of grafted-on concepts and hindsight in interpretation, of falsifications that arise from seeing Hölderlin from a certain angle and interpreting his works according to preconceived notions.
