Book Studies in Early Greek Philosophy

Download or read book Studies in Early Greek Philosophy written by Jaap Mansfeld and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of nineteen articles in Jaap Mansfeld’s Studies in Early Greek Philosophy span the period from Anaximander to Socrates. Solutions to problems of interpretation are offered through a scrutiny of the sources, and also of the traditions of presentation and reception found in antiquity. Excursions in the history of scholarship help to diagnose discussions of which the primum movens may have been forgotten. General questions are treated, for instance the phenomenon of detheologization in doxographical texts, while problems relating to individual philosophers are also discussed. For example, the history of Anaximander’s cosmos, the status of Parmenides’ human world, and the reliability of what we know about the soul of Anaximenes, and of what Philoponus tells us about the behaviour of Democritus’ atoms.

Book Hegel s Interpretation of the Religions of the World

Download or read book Hegel s Interpretation of the Religions of the World written by Jon Stewart and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion, Hegel treats the religions of the world under the rubric "the determinate religion." This is a part of his corpus that has traditionally been neglected since scholars have struggled to understand what philosophical work it is supposed to do. In Hegel's Interpretation of the Religions of the World, Jon Stewart argues that Hegel's rich analyses of Buddhism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Egyptian and Greek polytheism, and the Roman religion are not simply irrelevant historical material, as is often thought. Instead, they play a central role in Hegel's argument for what he regards as the truth of Christianity. Hegel believes that the different conceptions of the gods in the world religions are reflections of individual peoples at specific periods in history. These conceptions might at first glance appear random and chaotic, but there is, Hegel claims, a discernible logic in them. Simultaneously, a theory of mythology, history, and philosophical anthropology, Hegel's account of the world religions goes far beyond the field of philosophy of religion. The controversial issues surrounding his treatment of the non-European religions are still very much with us today and make his account of religion an issue of continued topicality in the academic landscape of the twenty-first century.

Book Byzantine Perspectives on Neoplatonism

Download or read book Byzantine Perspectives on Neoplatonism written by Sergei Mariev and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byzantine intellectuals not only had direct access to Neoplatonic sources in the original language but also, at times, showed a particular interest in them. During the Early Byzantine period Platonism significantly contributed to the development of Christian doctrines and, paradoxically, remained a rival world view that was perceived by many Christian thinkers as a serious threat to their own intellectual identity. This problematic relationship was to become even more complex during the following centuries. Byzantine authors made numerous attempts to harmonize Neoplatonic doctrines with Christianity as well as to criticize, refute and even condemn them. The papers assembled in this volume discuss a number of specific questions and concerns that drew the interest of Byzantine scholars in different periods towards Neoplatonic sources in an attempt to identify and explore the central issues in the reception of Neoplatonic texts during the Byzantine era. This is the first volume of the sub-series "Byzantinisches Archiv - Series Philosophica", which will be dedicated to the rapidly growing field of research in Byzantine philosophical texts.

Book Complementary Modes of Representation in Keats Novalis and Shelley

Download or read book Complementary Modes of Representation in Keats Novalis and Shelley written by Irena Nikolova and published by New York : P. Lang. This book was released on 2001 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the crisis of Romantic representation by regarding the literary text not only as a figuration of what lies beyond it, but by also considering how its figures are involved in more complex interactions among inner visions, textual representations, and their subsequent interpretations. This approach to the problem of representation aims at redefining the indeterminacies of the Romantic text by analyzing it in terms of the Romantic process of becoming, of its self-revisions, and self-interpretations. Instead of locating differential structures within the text that denote the impossibility of reconciling conception and expression, this book seeks to reconstruct the text as a totality by suggesting that its different modes of representation do not contradict, but complement each other. The construction of the paradigm of complementarity, based on German Romantic aesthetics and German and English Romantic literature, is positioned as an alternative to the approaches of deconstruction.
