Download or read book Chopin written by J. Cuthbert Hadden and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First appearing in 1903, this was perhaps the first truly well-balanced account of Chopin as a man and Chopin as a composer, in English. The author describes Chopin's life and activities from his early days in Warsaw to the days he spent in London, Paris, Vienna, and elsewhere. The author gives accounts of the enthusiasm with which Chopin's works were received, early reviews, Chopin's own reactions to the places he visited and the people he saw, and much more. Also included are numerous letters, a bibliography, a list of Chopin's published works (at the time of writing), and an index. Although there is no shortage of biographies of Chopin, the present book was written at a time of heightened interest, and is full of the vigour and passion which reveal a more honest perception of the effect the composer has on audiences worldwide than many scholarly accounts do today. Certainly a must for the enthusiast of Chopin, and without doubt a great way for the newcomer to get to know the details about the man behind the music.

Download or read book Variations and Variation Technique in the Music of Chopin written by Zofia Chechlińska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Chopin composed only a few works in variation form, he employed variations and variation technique in the majority of his works. Multiple modified repetitions of musical units on different levels of a work are so typical of Chopin’s works that this may be considered one of the chief determinants of his style. Focusing on a broad range of Chopin’s works, this book explores the extent to which Chopin’s oeuvre is suffused with variations, the role that variation technique plays in his work, to what extent it interacts with other techniques for developing and modifying musical material, and how the variation technique itself evolved. Beginning with a comprehensively documented investigation of the concept of variation in its own right, Zofia Chechlińska employs Riemannian and Schenkerian theory to consider, in turn, the ways in which Chopin constructs variations on the level of microstructure (motif and phrase) and macrostructure (thematic areas, sections, movements and form). This is the first English translation of one of the classics of musicological literature in Poland and is essential reading for scholars of Chopin and nineteenth-century music and music analysts.

This Companion explores the richness of musical time through a variety of perspectives, surveying influential writings on the topic, incorporating the perspectives of listeners, analysts, composers, and performers, and considering the subject across a range of genres and cultures. It includes chapters on music perception, visualizing rhythmic notation, composers' writings on rhythm, rhythm in jazz, rock, and hip-hop. Readers will gain an understanding of musicians' approaches to performing complex rhythms of contemporary music, and revealing insights into the likely future of rhythm in music.
Download or read book Chopin Pianist and Teacher written by Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-12-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English paperback edition of the unique collection of documents which reveal Chopin as teacher and interpreter of his own music. From the accounts of his pupils, acquaintances and contemporaries, together with his own writing, we gain valuable insight into Chopin's pianistic and stylistic practice, his teaching methods and his aesthetic beliefs. The documents are divided into two categories: those concerning technique and style, two notions inseparable in Chopin's mind, and those concerning the interpretation of Chopin's works. Extensive appendix material presents Chopin's essay 'Sketch for a method', as well as annotated scores belonging to Chopin's pupils and acquaintances, and personal accounts of Chopin's playing as experienced by his contemporaries: composers and pianists, pupils and friends, writers and critics. The statements of Chopin's own students in diaries, letters and reminiscences, written, dictated or conveyed by word of mouth, provide the bulk of these accounts. Throughout the book detailed annotations add a valuable scholary dimension, creating an indispensable guide to the authentic performance of Chopin's piano works.
