Book A Revision of the Freshwater Puffer Fish Genus Pao Tetraodontidae With Descriptions of Two New Species

Download or read book A Revision of the Freshwater Puffer Fish Genus Pao Tetraodontidae With Descriptions of Two New Species written by Gabriel A. Somarriba and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pufferfishes in the genus Pao (Tetraodontidae) represent the largest entirely freshwater clade of fishes in the Tetraodontiformes, currently containing 15 species inhabiting rivers, reservoirs, swamps, and lakes in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Southern China, Laos, Malaysia, and Indonesia. This group has a deficient taxonomy due to the peculiar nature of the fishes themselves, including a dearth of diagnostic morphological characters and variability of color pattern, which have caused confusion for taxonomists and poor species descriptions lacking detail. For these reasons, much uncertainty surrounds the distribution and identification of these fishes. This study attempted to resolve these issues, first by using a combination of COX1 and UCE molecular data to create a comprehensive species tree for the genus, then evaluating morphological characters for taxonomic utility, and finally by revising the taxonomy of Pao to identify species groups using a robust phylogenomic and morphological framework. Ten species names are retained as valid, and two new species of Pao from mainland southeast Asia are described.

His message: to know these animals is to save them. Sartore intends to photograph every animal in captivity in the world. He is circling the globe, visiting zoos and wildlife rescue centers to create studio portraits of 12,000 species, with an emphasis on those facing extinction. He has photographed more than 6,000 already and now, thanks to a multi-year partnership with National Geographic, he may reach his goal. This book showcases his animal portraits: from tiny to mammoth, from the Florida grasshopper sparrow to the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Paired with the prose of veteran wildlife writer Douglas Chadwick, this book presents an argument for saving all the species of our planet.
