Book The Status and Distribution of Freshwater Biodiversity in Central Africa

Download or read book The Status and Distribution of Freshwater Biodiversity in Central Africa written by E. G. E. Brooks and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2011 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main reasons cited for inadequate representation of biodiversity in the development processes is a lack of readily available information on inland water taxa. In response to this need for basic for information on species, the IUCN Species Programme conducted a regional assessment of the status and distribution of 2,261 taxa of freshwater fishes, molluscs, odonates, crabs and selected families of aquatic plants from throughout central Africa. This study is based on the collation and analysis of existing information, and the knowledge of regional experts.

Book The Status and Distribution of Freshwater Biodiversity in Northern Africa

This book was released on 2010 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment is the first overview of the conservation status of 877 northern African freshwater species belonging to five taxonomic groupsfish, molluscs, dragonflies and damselflies, freshwater crabs and aquatic plantsin accordance with the IUCN regional Red List guidelines. Species at risk of regional extinction are mapped and conservation measures are proposed to reduce the probability of future declines.

Book Wildlife in a Changing World

Download or read book Wildlife in a Changing World written by Jean-Christophe Vié and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2009 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wildlife in a Changing World" presents an analysis of the 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Beginning with an explanation of the IUCN Red List as a key conservation tool, it goes on to discuss the state of the world s species and provides the latest information on the patterns of species facing extinction in some of the most important ecosystems in the world, highlighting the reasons behind their declining status. Areas of focus in the report include: freshwater biodiversity, the status of the world s marine species, species susceptibility to climate change impacts, the Mediterranean biodiversity hot spot, and broadening the coverage of biodiversity assessments."

Book Freshwater key biodiversity areas in the Mediterranean basin hotspot

Download or read book Freshwater key biodiversity areas in the Mediterranean basin hotspot written by V. Barrios and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Mediterranean basin biodiversity hotspot is well known for its globally important biodiversity, its freshwater biodiversity has not been as widely recognized for its importance. Through this project, freshwater key biodiversity areas (KBAs) have now been identified, mapped and validated throughout much of the Mediterranean hotspot. It is now important to raise awareness of their status as validated freshwater KBAs and to develop plans for appropriate conservation actions at these sites, as this biodiversity is highly threatened largely due to the conflicting demands upon a diminishing supply of fresh water which is further exacerbated by the increased severity of drought across the region.

Book Freshwater Biodiversity

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Dudgeon
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2020-05-21
  • ISBN : 1108882625
  • Pages : 517 pages

Download or read book Freshwater Biodiversity written by David Dudgeon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing human populations and higher demands for water impose increasing impacts and stresses upon freshwater biodiversity. Their combined effects have made these animals more endangered than their terrestrial and marine counterparts. Overuse and contamination of water, overexploitation and overfishing, introduction of alien species, and alteration of natural flow regimes have led to a 'great thinning' and declines in abundance of freshwater animals, a 'great shrinking' in body size with reductions in large species, and a 'great mixing' whereby the spread of introduced species has tended to homogenize previously dissimilar communities in different parts of the world. Climate change and warming temperatures will alter global water availability, and exacerbate the other threat factors. What conservation action is needed to halt or reverse these trends, and preserve freshwater biodiversity in a rapidly changing world? This book offers the tools and approaches that can be deployed to help conserve freshwater biodiversity.
