Book Field Key to the Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia

Download or read book Field Key to the Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia written by British Columbia. Resources Inventory Committee. Aquatic Inventory Task Force and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With growing public concern about biodiversity and conservation, inaccurate identification of wild species is becoming more important. This set of keys to British Columbia fishes is an attempt to provide rapid and dependable field identifications of freshwater fish by those who are not taxonomists, unlike traditional keys which are designed for use with preserved specimens and are filled with obscure jargon and complicated directions. Information is included in this guide that is rarely incorporated in traditional keys, such as where a fish was caught (geographic locality and site-specific habitat) and what it looks like when alive. To simplify the keys, the guide divides the province into eight zoogeographic regions, generally corresponding to major drainage basins. The appendix contains a conventional key for use on preserved material and includes all the species known to occur in British Columbia.

Book Freshwater Fishes of Canada

Download or read book Freshwater Fishes of Canada written by William Beverley Scott and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 1020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fisheries Research Board is proud to present this volume, a tribute to the cooperation between the government agency that initiated and supported the work and the research organization that carried it out. It is the hope of the authors that this text will perform a useful service by highlighting the lack of information on many aspects of the biology of many Canadian fish species. Particularly glaring is our ignorance of the basic life history of many common species.

Book Pacific Salmon their Ecosystems

Download or read book Pacific Salmon their Ecosystems written by Deanna J. Stouder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium "Pacific Salmon and Their Ecosystems: Status and Future Options',' and this book resulted from initial efforts in 1992 by Robert J. Naiman and Deanna J. Stouder to examine the problem of declining Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.). Our primary goal was to determine informational gaps. As we explored different scientific sources, state, provincial, and federal agencies, as well as non-profit and fishing organizations, we found that the information existed but was not being communicated across institutional and organizational boundaries. At this juncture, we decided to create a steering committee and plan a symposium to bring together researchers, managers, and resource users. The steering committee consisted of members from state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and private industry (see Acknowledgments for names and affiliations). In February 1993, we met at the University of Washington in Seattle to begin planning the symposium. The steering committee spent the next four months developing the conceptual framework for the symposium and the subsequent book. Our objectives were to accomplish the following: (1) assess changes in anadromous Pacific Northwest salmonid populations, (2) examine factors responsible for those changes, and (3) identify options available to society to restore Pacific salmon in the Northwest. The symposium on Pacific Salmon was held in Seattle, Washington, January 10-12, 1994. Four hundred and thirty-five people listened to oral presentations and examined more than forty posters over two and a half days. We made a deliberate attempt to draw in speakers and attendees from outside the Pacific Northwest.
