Book Anadromous Waters Cataloging and Fish Inventory in Select Drainages of the Upper Yukon Tanana and Copper Rivers

Download or read book Anadromous Waters Cataloging and Fish Inventory in Select Drainages of the Upper Yukon Tanana and Copper Rivers written by Nate Cathcart and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From July 20-August 5th, 2020 and opportunistic dates in September or October, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish, will inventory stream fish assemblages and associated habitats in a 82,645 km2 study area selected around the upper Yukon, Tanana, and Copper rivers. Staff identified 255 potential sample sites on small and intermediate sized stream of which we anticipate sampling at least 100 headwater streams and 20 intermediate un-wadeable streams. At each site, prior to electrofishing crews will collect data describing location, water quality, stream characteristics, aquatic habitat, and riparian vegetation. Fish will be collected primarily using backpack and raft mounted electrofishing equipment, and hook-and-line, minnow traps, and aerial observations will be used as supplemental sampling methods. Anadromous fish assemblage data collected will be used to nominate waters to the State of Alaska’s Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes (Anadromous Waters Catalog, AWC), or to update fish life stage information for waters already listed in the AWC. All sampling data will be available via the ADF&G Alaska Freshwater Fish Inventory (AFFI) online mapping application.

Book Anadromous Cataloging and Fish Inventory in Lakes Draining to Cook Inlet and Bristol Bay

Download or read book Anadromous Cataloging and Fish Inventory in Lakes Draining to Cook Inlet and Bristol Bay written by James Bales and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state has multiple administrative tools to protect fish habitat. Alaska Statute (AS) 16.05.871 (the Anadromous Fish Act), along with the Fishway Act (AS 16.05.841, which requires that fish passage be maintained in any stream "frequented by salmon or other fish"), constitute Alaska's strongest and most comprehensive in-stream fish-habitat protection standards. The Anadromous Fish Act requires ADF&G to "specify the various rivers, lakes and streams or parts of them" of the state that are important to the spawning, rearing or migration of anadromous fish. A central goal of this project is to inventory fish assemblages, not individual species or selected species groups. Documenting aquatic and riparian habitat characteristics at fish-collection lakes also provides baseline information for comparison with future studies, and may also contribute to improved understanding of fish-habitat associations. The overall goal of the AFFI program is to provide information needed for management of the freshwater habitats that support Alaska's anadromous and freshwater-resident fish stocks.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A baseline inventory of fish distribution (with an emphasis on anadromous fishes) was undertaken in the upper Susitna River basin as part of the Alaska Freshwater Fish Inventory (AFFI) program. Mainstem rivers, intermediate streams, and headwater streams throughout the basin were surveyed August 3-16, 2011, and in addition, a helicopter survey was conducted on July 27-28 for recording adult salmon upstream of Devil Canyon. Each station report includes station description, water quality, streamflow, stream channel, riparian vegetation communities, fish observations (species, life stage, life history, count, measurements, sampling method), and instruments. The primary fish-collection gear type used was single-pass electrofishing.
