Download or read book Broken Under Interrogation written by Jeffrey M. Hopkins and published by Jeffrey M Hopkins. This book was released on 2008-07-14 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Under Interrogation, by Jeffrey M. Hopkins, brings into stark perspective the lasting impact of warâs painful legacy; a world morally skewed by cruelty and twisted with self-interest. Through a series of reminiscences scattered throughout a brutal interrogation, Hopkinsâs jolting and austere portrayal of one manâs crusade to mete out justice challenges pat notions of right and wrong, good and evil, and the sanctity of the American Dream. Hopkins explores human nature in a context overflowing with moral ambiguity and ethical doubt, where the lines between justice and degradation become blurred, if not made thoroughly invisible. With âkick in the teethâ style and a narrative voice that demands attention, Broken Under Interrogation imparts a cautionary tale of what might be: a story as chilling in its contemporary significance as it is ominous in its vision of the future.

Book After the Flash

Download or read book After the Flash written by Linda Rosenbery and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical narrative reveals the life of Linda, a young woman struggling to come to grips with her rudderless existence, of her stumbling back to her hometown after a failed marriage, and having to face the judgments of a stoic Japanese mother. Chieko’s life is in stark contrast, having survived the most horrific last days of World War II, and having come of age in occupied Japan where she made a living working in a hostess club serving drinks and dancing with servicemen. Linda wants to write her mother’s story, and Chieko always says no. But then something happens between Chieko and Linda as they begin to bond through Linda’s apprenticeship in Chieko’s flower garden. On those gardening days, after the work is done, they sit at the kitchen table where Chieko quite openly weaves for her daughter the threads of her life, including her determination to survive. Linda at times feels traumatized by her mother Chieko’s descriptions of the war, and most of the time Linda ends her kitchen table talks and heads to the local bar to get drunk. One spring day in the fourth year of their kitchen table talks, Chieko says to Linda as they sip scotch, “If you really must tell my story, tell it like the playwright, Eugene O’Neill, because he knew sadness.” Even though Linda hears it in her mother voice each time she speaks about her life, the sorrow in her tone routinely breaks Linda down. But Chieko is funny, too, with stories of coming of age at a time in Japan when most believed romance and life in paradise was a promise made in American films brought in by the occupation. Chieko’s hopes and dreams of life in the States with a handsome hero are penned on a photograph of herself that she gives to her American lover as he heads back to the States. It is a simple note that reads, “I promise my eternal love.” Of all the lovely traits mothers and daughters can have in common, one of theirs isn’t so lovely: They both don’t keep promises.

Book In Death Filled Skies

  • Author : J. Thomas Callahan
  • Publisher : Page Publishing Inc
  • Release : 2022-01-26
  • ISBN : 1662462867
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book In Death Filled Skies written by J. Thomas Callahan and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What did you do in the war, Grandpa?” asked my eleven-year-old great-granddaughter one evening. In the time it took her to ask that one innocent question, my thoughts slipped back more than seventy years to the summer and fall of 1943 and to the airfields of East Anglia and into the death-laden skies over Nazi-occupied Europe. The Eighth Air Force’s rule was simple: “Complete twenty-five bombing missions, and you can go home.” The problem was, the odds of completing those twenty-five missions was almost nil. In our B-17 Flying Fortress, my friends and I had to fight off Germany’s finest fighter pilots in their Messerschmitt’s and Focke-Wulf’s and fly through flak barrages so thick it looked, felt, and sounded like we were caught in the middle of a Texas tornado. We risked asphyxiation in the thin air at altitudes of twenty-five thousand feet or higher and endured temperatures so low that without the forty pounds of protective clothing covering us from head to toe, including electrically heated bunny suits, we would have frozen to death in a matter of minutes. That one simple question convinced me that it was time that my family learned what I had done and the price my friends and I had paid during our war against fascism and tyranny, a topic that I had never really spoken about before.

Book Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw

Download or read book Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw written by Will Ferguson and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2010-08-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The follow-up to the back-to-back successes of How to Be a Canadian (over 110,000 copies sold) and Happiness™ (Winner of the Leacock Medal for Humour). Will Ferguson spent a three-year period criss-crossing Canada and back again. In a helicopter above the barrenlands of the sub-Arctic, in a canoe with his four-year-old son, aboard seaplanes and along the Underground Railroad, Will’s travels have taken him from Cape Spear on the coast of Newfoundland to the sun-dappled streets of Olde Victoria. In his last book, Will told us how to be Canadian; now in this book, he will tell us what it means to be Canadian. Will’s journey takes him to far-flung isolated communities as well as deep into Canada’s urban centres. From the “million-acre farm” that is P.E.I. to the tobacco belt of southern Ontario, from the architectural mess that is Montreal to the glorious jumble that is St. John’s, from a renegade republic in northwestern New Brunswick to a tundra buggy in the polar bear migration paths of Hudson Bay, Will explodes the myths of who we are. Funny, poignant and insightful, Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw is a provocative tribute to our quirky and fascinating country. Excerpt from Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw: In one particular seedy St. John’s pub, I was adopted by a work crew from Portugal Cove who took an immediate, almost antagonistic liking to me. “You’re from Alberta, you say? I have a cousin in Fort McMurray, maybe you know him.” (Everybody in Newfoundland has a cousin in Fort McMurray.) The crew from Portugal Cove tormented me with screech and second-hand smoke as they regaled me with tales of how their families were so poor “back when” that all they could afford to eat were lobsters. This was not the first time I had heard this. Apparently half the population of Newfoundland has subsisted on lobster at some point or other.

Book Breaking Hate

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christian Picciolini
  • Publisher : Hachette Books
  • Release : 2020-02-25
  • ISBN : 0316522953
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Breaking Hate written by Christian Picciolini and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a onetime white-supremacist leader now working to disengage people from extremist movements, Breaking Hate is a "riveting" (James Clapper), "groundbreaking" (Malcolm Nance), "horrifying [but] hopeful" (S.E. Cupp) exploration of how to heal a nation reeling from hate and violence. Today's extremist violence surges into our lives from what seems like every direction -- vehicles hurtling down city sidewalks; cyber-threats levied against political leaders and backed up with violence; automatic weapons unleashed on mall shoppers, students, and the faithful in houses of worship. As varied as the violent acts are the attackers themselves -- neo-Nazis, white nationalists, the alt-right, InCels, and Islamist jihadists, to name just a few. In a world where hate has united communities that traffic in radical doctrines and rationalize their use of violence to rally the disaffected, the fear of losing a loved one to extremism or falling victim to terrorism has become almost universal. Told with startling honesty and intimacy, Breaking Hate is both the inside story of how extremists lure the unwitting to their causes and a guide for how everyday Americans can win them-and our civil democracy-back. Former extremist Christian Picciolini unravels this sobering narrative from the frontlines, where he has worked for two decades as a peace advocate and "hate breaker." He draws from the firsthand experiences of extremists he has helped to disengage, revealing how violent movements target the vulnerable and exploit their essential human desires, and how the right interventions can save lives. Along the way, Picciolini solves the puzzle of why extremism has come to define our era, laying bare the ways in which modern society-from "fake news" and social media propaganda to coded language and a White House that inflames rather than heals-has polarized and radicalized an entire generation. Piercing, empathetic, and unrestrained, Breaking Hate tells the sweeping story of the challenge of our time and provides a roadmap to overcoming it.

Download or read book We Walk in Footprints written by Ellyn Weaver and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dominated by a powerful founding family, a safe small-town cocoon resting on the fringe of Seneca/Iroquois sacred homelands conceals the secrets of the human heart, the wayward soul perpetuated through the years of habitation. In the Lands of the Twin Springs, native Seneca/Iroquois peoples maintained Sacred Home lands for many generations. When White settlers arrive in 1820 attempting to make a new life, a chain of events is set in motion involving cooperation and conflict that lasts for more than a century. Native or Quaker, shopkeeper or oil baron, the residents of the area will face decades of socioeconomic upheaval followed by cultural accommodation forced upon farm-to-market towns and expanding cities throughout an often-fractious United States. Based on historical events this novel, the first of a series, depicts a family saga originating in the Allegheny River Valley and spanning cultures and transplanted generations from the early eighteen hundreds into 1960.
