Book excerpt: A practical and insightful discussion of time-frequency analysis methods and technologies Time–frequency analysis of seismic signals aims to reveal the local properties of nonstationary signals. The local properties, such as time-period, frequency, and spectral content, vary with time, and the time of a seismic signal is a proxy of geologic depth. Therefore, the time–frequency spectrum is composed of the frequency spectra that are generated by using the classic Fourier transform at different time positions. Different time–frequency analysis methods are distinguished in the construction of the local kernel prior to using the Fourier transform. Based on the difference in constructing the Fourier transform kernel, this book categorises time–frequency analysis methods into two groups: Gabor transform-type methods and energy density distribution methods. This book systematically presents time–frequency analysis methods, including technologies which have not been previously discussed in print or in which the author has been instrumental in developing. In the presentation of each method, the fundamental theory and mathematical concepts are summarised, with an emphasis on the engineering aspects. This book also provides a practical guide to geophysicists who attempt to generate geophysically meaningful time–frequency spectra, who attempt to process seismic data with time-dependent operations for the fidelity of nonstationary signals, and who attempt to exploit the time–frequency space seismic attributes for quantitative characterisation of hydrocarbon reservoirs.

The decomposed frequency components of seismic trace are widely used to quantitatively predict the thickness of thin layers. The current popular time-spectrum analysis methods include the Short Time Fourier transform (STFT), Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), S-transform (ST), and Matching Pursuit (MP), among which MP is the most tolerant of window/scalar effect. However, the traditional wavelet library is a set of user defined wavelet which does not consider the seismic event interfering of thin layer. As a result, it is very difficult for MP based algorithms to obtain an accurate wavelet in each decomposition iteration for thin layer reservoirs. The improved MP (IMP) algorithm assumes that the seismic reflection response of thin layers can be simulated by the convolution between wavelet and a thin-layer cake model. The parameters of wavelet library of MP algorithm include wavelet type, the dominant frequency of wavelet, and the phase of the wavelet. The parameters of my new “wavelet” library include wavelet type, the dominant frequency of wavelet, the phase of the wavelet, and the time thickness of thin layer model. I applied IMP to three examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of IMP. The first example is a synthetic seismic trace generated using a layer-cake model. The second example is a synthetic seismic trace computed using well logs. The third example is the real seismic data. The first synthetic example indicates that the reflectivity set obtained using IMP accurately points out the interface of thin layers. The second synthetic example indicates that the impedance computed using reflectivity of IMP has higher correlation coefficient when compared to that of MP. The real seismic data example indicates that reflectivity set obtained using IMP can identify the top and base of thin layers whose two-way time thickness are great than T/5, where T is the period corresponding to the dominant frequency of seismic data.

Book excerpt: In exploration seismology, data are acquired at multiple source and receiver posi tions along a profile line. These data are subsequently processed and interpreted. The primary result of this process is a subsurface image of the exploration target. As part of this procedure, additional information is also obtained about the subsurface material properties, e.g., seismic velocities. The methods that are employed in the acquisition and processing of exploration seismic data are internally consistent. That is, principally near vertical incidence seismic waves are generated, recorded and subsequently imaged. The data processing methods commonly used are based upon a small angle of incidence approximation, thus making the imaging problem tractable for existing data processing technology. Although tremendously successful, the limitations of this method are generally recognized. Current and future exploration goals will likely require the use of additional seismic waves, i.e., both compressional and shear precritical and postcritical reflections and refractions. Also, in addition to making better use of seismic travel times, recent efforts to directly incorporate seismic amplitude variations show that the approach may lead to a better understanding of subsurface rock properties. In response to more demanding exploration goals, recent data acquisition techniques have improved significantly by increasing the spatial aperture and incorporating a large number of closely spaced receivers. The need for better subsurface resolution in depth and position has encouraged the use of 240, 512, and even 1024 recorded data channels with receiver separations of 5 to 25 m.

Book excerpt: This dissertation describes a new method called Constrained Least-Squares Spectral Analysis (CLSSA), an inversion-based algorithm for computing the time-frequency analysis of reflection seismograms. CLSSA is formulated and applied to modeled seismic waveforms and real seismic data. The Fourier Series coefficients are computed as a function of time directly by inverting a basis of truncated sinusoidal kernels for a moving time window. The method results in spectra that have reduced window smearing for a given window length relative to the Discrete Fourier Transform irrespective of window shape, and a time-frequency analysis with a combination of time and frequency resolution that is superior to both the Short-time Fourier Transform and the Continuous Wavelet Transform. The reduction in spectral smoothing enables better determination of the spectral characteristics of interfering reflections within a short window. The degree of resolution improvement relative to the Short-time Fourier Transform increases as window length decreases. As compared to the Continuous Wavelet Transform, the method has greatly improved temporal resolution, particularly at low frequencies.
