Book Auditory Frequency Selectivity

Download or read book Auditory Frequency Selectivity written by Brian Moore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most fundamental aspects of the auditory system is its frequency selectivity - the ability to resolve a complex sound into frequency compOhents. This ability plays a role in many aspects of auditory perception, including: the masking of one sound by another; the perception of pitch for pure tones and complex tones; the perception of timbre; the perception of the relative phase of components in complex sounds; and the perception of loudness. Over the last decade, there have been considerable advances in our understanding of frequency selectivity, both at the physiological and psychophysical level, and rapid progress continues to be made. This book summarizes the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Auditory Frequency Selectivity which was held in Wolfson College, Cambridge from June 23rd to 27th, 1986. The Workshop brought together leading researchers from all disciplines relevant to the topic, with the aim of reviewing and consolidating the latest research findings, and identifying areas of uncertainty or controversy where further research is needed. The book is aimed primarily at research scientists and research students in the fields of psychology, audiology, auditory physiology, biophysics, medicine, acoustical engineering, noise control, communication and speech science. It should also be useful for advanced undergraduates in these disciplines. A feature of the book is that it includes summaries of the discussions which followed the presentation of each paper at the Workshop.

Book Pitch Perception and Harmonic Resolvability in Normal hearing and Hearing impaired Listeners

Download or read book Pitch Perception and Harmonic Resolvability in Normal hearing and Hearing impaired Listeners written by Joshua G. W. Bernstein and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (cont.) However, further results in the third and fourth studies suggested a role for harmonic resolvability in pitch discrimination, inconsistent with the lack of dependence on resolvability of the modified autocorrelation model. In normal-hearing subjects at high stimulus levels and in hearing-impaired subjects, a wider spacing between adjacent frequency components, related to a reduction in frequency selectivity, was required to yield accurate FO discrimination performance. Thus, resolved harmonics may be necessary for accurate FO encoding, and the pitch discrimination deficit associated with sensorineural hearing loss may be related to a reduction in frequency selectivity. These results support spectral or spectrotemporal pitch models that derive FO from resolved harmonics, or a place-dependent temporal model whereby peripheral filter bandwidths limit the range of detectable periodicities. Because spectral processing plays an important role in pitch discrimination, hearing-impaired and cochlear-implant listeners may benefit from hearing-aid fitting procedures and cochlear-implant processing algorithms that emphasize or enhance spectral place cues.

Book Time Resolution in Auditory Systems

Download or read book Time Resolution in Auditory Systems written by Axel Michelsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books from symposia describe the current status in well established fields of research, where much is known and where the loose ends are only details in the picture. The topic dealt with here does not fall into this pattern. The study of time as a parameter in its own right is difficult, and the loose ends tend to do minate the present picture. Although the book does provide the reader with an overview of the field, its main value is probably to act as a source of "food for thought" for those interested in the function of sense organs and nervous systems as substrates for behaviour. The Introduction is intended to provide the readers of the book with a short guide to the topiCS discussed in the different chapters. The rather detailed Index may help those looking for information on specific topiCS. The Index also explains most of the abbreviations used in the book. The basic idea of the Danavox symposia is to invite a small group of experts to discuss a rather narrow theme in sound communication. The small number of active par tiCipants has the advantage of encouraging intense dis cussions and of avoiding overloading the program. On the other hand, selecting the partiCipants is difficult.

Book Hearing Physiological Bases and Psychophysics

Download or read book Hearing Physiological Bases and Psychophysics written by R. Klinke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book contains the original papers and essential points of the general discussion of a meeting organized in a series of tri-annual conferences, initiated by Dr. R. Plomp with the meeting in Driebergen, The Netherlands, 1969. These symposia have tried to bring to\ether people from extreme fields in auditory research and to amalgamate their recent findings. This series of conferences has proven to be most successful and has attracted much attention by scientists in auditory research. The organizers have tried to maintain the character of the meeting with em phasis on discussion by precirculation of the full text of the papers and by re stricting the number of active contributions. Unfortunately, this forced us to reject a great number of submitted papers - in selection we attempted to compose a fair survey of certain fields of auditory research but leave others untreated. Because of the same reason the number of invited review papers had to be limited to three. The reader may decide whether or not this selection was adequate. We thank all those participants who attended the meeting inspite of the rejection of their paper. The authors have been responsible for text and typing of their manuscripts. The editors have not attempted to standardize the spelling.
