Book French Portrait Engraving of the Xviith and Xviiith Centuries

Download or read book French Portrait Engraving of the Xviith and Xviiith Centuries written by Thomas Head Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Portrait Engraving of the Xviith and Xviiith Centuries French Portrait Engraving has not been entirely neglected in books dealing with the general field of engraving, but it has always been treated rather summarily, and generally from a very limited point of view. The whole subject, in fact, has never been covered. The great engravers of the XVIIth century - Mellan and Morin, Nanteuil, Masson and Edelinck - have been fairly well recognized (though it yet remains to do full justice to Nanteuil), - but the XVIIIth century has been largely ignored, and almost entirely misunderstood. Commonly, it has been looked at through XVIIth century eyes, and regarded only as a gradual decline from XVIIth century standards. The style of the Drevets has been regarded only as an excessive elaboration of the classic XVIIth century manner - as the starting-point of a decadence which gradually brought the whole school into decline; - while the less pretentious portrait engravings of the Louis XVI period have generally been ignored as rather trivial, or hastily dismissed as being merely delicate technical achievements. Actually, there was no decadence and no decline. The XVIIIth century portrait engravers continued the XVIIth century traditions, and maintained its high standard of technical skill. Book A Kingdom of Images

Download or read book A Kingdom of Images written by Peter Fuhring and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once considered the golden age of French printmaking, Louis XIV’s reign saw Paris become a powerhouse of print production. During this time, the king aimed to make fine and decorative arts into signs of French taste and skill and, by extension, into markers of his imperialist glory. Prints were ideal for achieving these goals; reproducible and transportable, they fueled the sophisticated propaganda machine circulating images of Louis as both a man of war and a man of culture. This richly illustrated catalogue features more than one hundred prints from the Getty Research Institute and the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, whose print collection Louis XIV established in 1667. An esteemed international group of contributors investigates the ways that cultural policies affected printmaking; explains what constitutes a print; describes how one became a printmaker; studies how prints were collected; and considers their reception in the ensuing centuries. A Kingdom of Images is published to coincide with an exhibition on view at the Getty Research Institute from June 18 through September 6, 2015, and at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris from November 2, 2015, through January 31, 2016.

Book Nadar Collection Michel Et Mich le Auer

Download or read book Nadar Collection Michel Et Mich le Auer written by Maria Morris Hambourg and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1995 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nadar, whose real name was Felix Tournachon (1820-1910), was a conspicuous, even astonishing presence in nineteenth-century France. Engaging and quick-witted, he invented himself over and over as a bohemian writer, a journalist, a romantic utopian, a caricaturist, a portrait photographer, a balloonist, an entrepreneur, a prophet of aeronautics. The name "Nadar" was on everyone's lips. Today, it is Nadar's photography that is remembered. His sitters, who were often his friends, included the great men and women of his time: Dumas, Rossini, Baudelaire, Sarah Bernhardt, Daumier, Berlioz, George Sand, Delacroix. Nadar's legendary name has been attached not only to his original photographs but to reprints, copies and a great deal of studio work. For that reason, this volume exactingly reproduces some one hundred photographs from the years 1854-60, the period of his earliest and finest photography, allowing viewers to become familiar with the subtle light and balanced, velvety tones that distinguish Nadar's original work. Accompanying the photographs are essays that shed new light on the many facets of Nadar.

Download or read book Imagining Childhood written by Erika Langmuir and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The images of children that abound in Western art do not simply mirror reality; they are imaginative constructs, representing childhood as a special stage of human life, or emblematic of the human condition itself. In a compelling book ranging widely across time, national boundaries, and genres from ancient Egyptian amulets to Picasso's Guernica, Erika Langmuir demonstrates that no historic period has a monopoly on the 'discovery of childhood'. Famous pictures by great artists, as well as barely known anonymous artefacts, illustrate not only Western society's perennially ambivalent attitudes to children, but also the many and varied functions that works of art have played throughout its history.

Book Salons History and the Creation of Seventeenth century France

Download or read book Salons History and the Creation of Seventeenth century France written by Faith Evelyn Beasley and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first half of the book is a detailed study of how the salons influenced the development of literature. Beasley argues that many women were not only writers, they also served as critics for the literary sphere as a whole. In the second half of the book Beasley examines how historians and literary critics subsequently portrayed the seventeenth century literary realm, which became identified with the great reign of Louis XIV and designated the official canon of French literature. Beasley argues that in a rewriting of this past, the salons were reconfigured in order to advance an alternative view of this premier moment of French culture and of the literary masterpieces that developed out of it. Through her analysis of how the seventeenth century salon has been defined and transmitted to posterity, Beasley illuminates facets of France's collective memory, and the powers that constituted it in the past and that are still working to define it today.

Book Pagodas in Play

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adrienne Ward
  • Publisher : Bucknell University Press
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0838756964
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book Pagodas in Play written by Adrienne Ward and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pagodas in Play analyzes the treatment of China in the imaginative and spectacular world of eighteenth-century Italian opera. It shows how Italians used perceptions of Chinese culture to address local and transnational developments, particularly Enlightenment and secular reform initiatives. Its focus on the texts and performance practices of opera, an entertainment form accessible to a wide public, reveals cultural operations and identities harder to detect in non-fictional reformist writings, the texts traditionally privileged to explain Italian mediations of Enlightenment ideas. In its close reading of nine libretti of the most salient Settecento operas treating China (opere serie and opere buffe by authors including Metastasio, Zeno, Goldoni and Lorenzi), Pagodas in Play differentiates Italian iterations of Chinese culture from French and English counterparts. It further challenges certain tenets of orientalism, showing how it operates when nationalist and/or colonialist projects are absent, and how orientalist practices in eighteenth-century Italy exhibit early on the complexity some scholars locate only in the twentieth century. Adrienne Ward teaches Italian literature and culture at the University of Virginia.
