Painting progressively asserted its independence from literature as it liberated itself from narrative obligations whilst interrogating the concept of subject matter itself. Simultaneously the influence of art on the writing styles of authors increased and the character of the artist established itself as a recurring motif in French literature. This book offers a panoramic review of the relationship between art and literature in nineteenth-century France. By means of a series of case studies chosen from key moments throughout the nineteenth century, the aim of this study is to provide a focused analysis of specific examples of this relationship, revealing both its multifaceted nature as well as offering a panorama of the development of this on-going and increasingly complex cultural relationship. For his first solo museum exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Aldrich presents 20 large-scale works alongside paintings by Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard and the Irish portraitist Sir William Orpen, selected from the Museum's permanent collection. These three nineteenth-century artists have very little in common with Aldrich, and yet are ideally counterpointed against his paintings, refocusing the works of all four in fascinating ways. Focusing on the fan's identity as a symbol of feminine sexuality, as a collectible art object, and, especially, as an alternative book form well suited to the reception of poetic texts, the study highlights the fan's suitability as a substrate for verse, deriving from its myriad associations with coquetry and sex, flight, air, and breath. Close readings of Stephane Mallarme's eventails of the 1880s and 1890s and Paul Claudel's Cent phrases pour eventails (1927) consider both text and paratext as they underscore the significant visual interest of this poetry. Works in prose and in verse by Octave Uzanne, Guy de Maupassant, and Marcel Proust, along with fan leaves by Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, and Paul Gauguin, serve as points of comparison that deepen our understanding of the complex interplay of text and image that characterizes this occasional subgenre. Through its interrogation of the correspondences between form and content in fan poetry, this study demonstrates that the fan was, in addition to being a ubiquitous fashion accessory, a significant literary and art historical object straddling the boundary between East and West, past and present, and high and low art.

Major works within this genre include Walter De Maria's Lightning Field (1977) located on an isolated high-desert plain in New Mexico; Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty (1970) in the Great Salt Lake, the concrete cylinders of Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels (1976), located in the Great Basin Desert in Utah; and other projects that nestle into environments ranging from open fields to concrete cityscapes. These works are typically depicted as they were when originally constructed. Yet their environmental contexts have transformed due to weather, agriculture, climate change, land-use policy, and more. In Second Site, James Nisbet presents the first sustained argument on how to account for the passage of time and environmental change in site-specific artworks, ranging from Richard Serra's Shift (1970)-whose initial small-farm-setting is now a growing exurb of Toronto-to Ant Farm's Cadillac Ranch (1974) and Nancy Holt's Dark Star Park (1984). Nisbet argues for an ecological reading of the artworks' environments, and coins the term "second site" to argue that manmade artworks and non-living things have their own durations but co-exist in the continuous experience of an environment. Any single photograph or experience of a site can provide only one view of an ever-changing existence.
