This book addresses the two issues that are basic to this claim: first, the question of what types of elements are frequently used in discourse and second, the question of how frequency of use affects cognitive representations. Reporting on evidence from natural conversation, diachronic change, variability, child language acquisition and psycholinguistic experimentation the original articles in this book support two major principles. First, the content of people’s interactions consists of a preponderance of subjective, evaluative statements, dominated by the use of pronouns, copulas and intransitive clauses. Second, the frequency with which certain items and strings of items are used has a profound influence on the way language is broken up into chunks in memory storage, the way such chunks are related to other stored material and the ease with which they are accessed to produce new utterances.

Book excerpt: Many of the assumptions of Labovian sociolinguistics are based on results drawn from US and UK English, Latin American Spanish and Canadian French. Sociolinguistic variation in the French of France has been rather little studied compared to these languages. This volume is the first examination and exploration of variation in French that studies in a unified way the levels of phonology, grammar and lexis using quantitative methods. One of its aims is to establish whether the patterns of variation that have been reported in French conform to those reported in other languages. A second important theme of this volume is the study of variation across speech styles in French, through a comparison with some of the best-known English results. The book is therefore also the first to examine current theories of social-stylistic variation by using fresh quantitative data. These data throw new light on the influence of methodology on results, on why certain linguistic variables have more stylistic value, and on how the strong normative tradition in France moulds interactions between social and stylistic variation.

Book excerpt: Adopting the theoretical framework of the minimalist program, this study of syntactic limitations on complement configuration investigates the link between thematic external arguments and case. Using evidence from pronominal, psychological experiencer, and inalienable constructions, it argues that both accusative and dative are structural cases in French and that this duality is reflected in a parallel limit on argument projection. Larson’s single complement hypothesis, which allows a maximum of two internal arguments, provides the theoretical justification for this proposal. The testing ground for the binary hypothesis is a group of nonthematic subject constructions involving undative as well as unaccusative verbs, linking, according to Burzio’s generalization, case suspension and lack of an internal argument. The investigation of these constructions and those involving partitive case provides not only a theoretically significant contribution to our understanding of grammar, but also a motivated explanation for a number of empirical problems in French.

The goals of the study are to propose a coherent way of looking at morphophonology in structural terms while assuming a certain autonomy of the phonological and morphological components. The study assumes the basic lexical/postlexical dichotomy of Lexical Phonology, but refers centrally to prosodic structure of the type proposed by Selkirk (1980) and further developed by, among others, Nespor & Vogel (1986), rather than to level ordering. The specific processes of French morphophonology examined here include certain aspects of prefixation and nasalization, glide information, closed syllable adjustment and penultimate schwa specification, which are reanalysed in structural terms, in contrast to analyses in the literature relying on level ordering. Other aspects of French morphophonology argued in the literature to be rule governed, such as Learned Backing, are reanalysed in terms of stem suppletion. The study thus supports Aronoff & Sridhar (1987), Fabb (1988), Booji (1989) and others in arguing against level ordering, while following the lead of Booji & Lieber (1993), Inkelas (1989) and others in advocating the concurrent existence of both morphological and prosodic structure.
