Book Cities and Languages

Download or read book Cities and Languages written by Richard Clément and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the international symposium, “Language Planning in Capitals and Urban Environments,” held March 25–26, 2010 at the University of Ottawa, with sponsorship from the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute, Canadian Heritage, the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages and the City of Ottawa. The Language Planning in Capitals and Urban Environments Symposium brought together administrators and researchers from Canadian and European cities to discuss language planning in urban environments. Two important concepts emerged from the proceedings: municipal bilingualism as an asset that deserves to be promoted, rather than merely a question of regulation; and bilingualism as a symbol of openness and inclusion that cities can use to advantage to distinguish themselves from their competitors.

Book Institutional Translation for International Governance

Download or read book Institutional Translation for International Governance written by Fernando Prieto Ramos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a state-of-the-art overview of institutional translation issues related to the development of international law and policies for supranational integration and governance. These issues are explored from various angles in selected papers by guest specialists and findings of a large-scale research project led by the editor. Focus is placed on key methodological and policy aspects of legal communication and translation quality in a variety of institutional settings, including several comparative studies of the United Nations and European Union institutions. The first book of its kind on institutional translation with a focus on quality of legal communication, this work offers a unique combination of perspectives drawn together through a multilayered examination of methods (e.g. corpus analysis, comparative law for translation and terminological analysis), skills and working procedures. The chapters are organized into three sections: (1) contemporary issues and methods; (2) translation quality in law- and policy-making and implementation; and (3) translation and multilingual case-law.

Book The State the Activists and the Islanders

Download or read book The State the Activists and the Islanders written by Robert J. Blackwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-22 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis of language policy on Corsica provides the first study of the three levels of language policy existing on the Mediterranean island of Corsica. It focuses on the key participants - the State, the language activists and the islanders - in the language debate that has taken place across the island since its purchase by France. This book is informed by recent work on language planning, both theoretical and relating to specific case studies. At the same time, it engages with trends in sociolinguistics over the past decades, which have included language planning in their investigations of languages in contact, language obsolescence and language death. A central premise of this book is that the three discrete categories of participants in the language debate are closely interrelated and that the status and position of Corsican in relation to French cannot be understood without a thorough exploration of these three strands. This volume will appeal to researchers and students in French Studies, sociolinguistics, and especially language policy.

Book Language and Nationalism in Europe

Download or read book Language and Nationalism in Europe written by Stephen Barbour and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-12-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of language in the present and past creation of social, cultural, and national identities in Europe. It considers the way in which language may sometimes reinforce national identity (as in England) while tending to subvert the nation-state (as in the United Kingdom). After an introduction describing the interactive roles of language, ethnicity, culture, and institutions in the character and formation of nationalism and identity, the book considers their different manifestations throughout Europe. Chapters are devoted to Britain and Ireland; France; Spain and Portugal; Scandinavia; the Netherlands and Belgium; Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Luxembourg; Italy; Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic; Bulgaria, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Albania, Slovenia, Romania, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo; Greece and Turkey; the Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, the Baltic States, and the Russian Federation. The book concludes with a consideration of the current relative status of the languages of Europe and how these and the identities they reflect are changing and evolving.
