It illustrates how interactional sociolinguistic, anthropological linguistic, discourse analytical and quantitative sociolinguistic approaches can be integrated with structural approaches to language in order to resolve rarely discussed questions systematically (what are the outlines of the community, who is a rightful speaker, what speech should be documented) that frequently crop up in projects of language documentation in multilingual contexts. The authors argue that comprehensively documenting complex linguistic phenomena requires taking into account the views of all local social actors (native and non native speakers, institutions, linguists, non-speakers etc.), applying a range of complementary data collection and analysis methods and putting issues of ideology, variation, language contact and interaction centre stage. This book will be welcomed by researchers in sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, fieldwork studies, language documentation and language variation and change.

All rail, waterway and road traffic was cut off by the Russians. The Berlin Airlift by Great Britain and the United States was West Berlin's lifeline.In 1949, after a Berlin Airlift crew returns to the States an explosion rips the right wing of their C-54 open over an unexplored area of Brazil. Only two of the five-man crew survive. The information is closely held---only President Truman and a select few know the cause of the crash. On national security grounds, the information is classified 'Top Secret' and sealed for fifty years. After spending a year in the jungle with aborigines both surviving crewmembers reach Cayenne, French Guiana. Neither crewman has any idea what caused the explosion that forced them down. Through the years, the engineer blames the death of his crewmembers on something he did or didn "t do that he should have. After living with guilt for forty-five years he sets out to discover the truth and a bizarre plot is uncovered.

The first comparative study of the complicated history of relations between the state and the air transport industry in Europe, the book travels from the earliest scheduled flights down to the era of liberalization and privatization in the 1990s. Martin Staniland concentrates on four key countries-France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom-exploring both the sources of support for airlines in Europe and the reasons why public ownership lost favor as the industry expanded. In particular, he examines links between the airlines on the one hand and national aircraft builders and ministries concerned with defense, foreign policy, and colonial administration on the other hand. The author concludes by considering the crises and restructuring experienced by national airlines in the 1980s and 1990s, and by exploring the related political battles over liberalization and privatization.
