Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Furniture To these general considerations, applicable to the study of domestic art in every country, we must add one which has special reference to the genius of France, and will be to some extent the guiding principle of this book. The sons of the soil in that country were never, strictly speaking, inventors, they never evolved the primary germ of a new style; but they had a marvellous gift for assimilating the foreign ideas with which they were brought In contact, and, as it were, recasting in the powerful crucible of their brain enfeebled. Book French Furniture Under Louis XVI and the Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book French Furniture Under Louis XVI and the Empire Classic Reprint written by Roger De Felice and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Furniture Under Louis XVI and the Empire In this volume Empire furniture will occupy much less space than Louis Seize. It may perhaps be enough to say that, in our opinion, this inequality is amply justified by the differences in merit, comfort, and adaptableness to the needs of ordinary life that exist between the two styles; but there is one more solid and positive reason. The aim of this handbook, like its predecessors, is to impart a better knowledge of the furniture of past times, but most of all the furniture that was simple and practical, the good, honest pieces with no pretentions to sham luxuriousness, belonging to the modest middle classes or even the country folk of old France. Now, the Empire Style never had time to make its way into the depths of the provinces, where everything is so slow to change. In any case, how could that style, so learned and archaeological, which had sprung finished and complete from the brain of a few fanatical devotees of antiquity, as one Minerva sprang in full panoply from out of the head of Jupiter - how could that style, so lacking in tradition, ever have found favour with the country people of France? How could they have understood it? And accordingly we find it left no trace in the output of the workshops of Provence or Normandy or Brittany. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Furniture Under Louis XV IS our modern passion for these pieces of furni ture, originally made for the lower middle classes and even the peasantry, and now used to adorn the most refined interiors, a totally irrational one, due to a mania for everything Old, irrespective of its merits? By no means. Not only do they deserve their honours for the most part, by reason Of their beauty Of line and material, the soundness Of their construction, and the fresh originality of their decoration, but it is certain that even at the period when they were made, no social prejudice banished them from the most elegant houses. Book French Furniture in the Middle Ages and Under Louis XIII Classic Reprint

Download or read book French Furniture in the Middle Ages and Under Louis XIII Classic Reprint written by Roger De Felice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Furniture in the Middle Ages and Under Louis XIII A consecutive and complete history of French furniture - complete in that it should not leave out the furniture used by the lower middle classes, the artisans and the peasants - remains still to be written; and the four little books of this series are far from claiming to fill such a gap. And yet they will perhaps usefully fill their modest place by giving some hints and ideas, as accurate as possible even though very elementary and simple, to those who appreciate the excellent work wrought by old time joiners out of walnut trees and cherry trees and oaks. The present passion for those plain pieces of furniture that six or eight generations of the folk of Lorraine, of Provence, of Gascony or Normandy have polished by use and filled with their humble treasures, has more legitimate foundations than the mere craze for running after a fashion and the astute advertising of dealers. They are practical, their solid strength is proof against the lapse of years - if we dared, we might say their soul is dovetailed to their frames - their material the ban bozs vzf, sec loyal cl marckana', spoken of in every article of the Statuts et ordonnances des mazstres huchz'ers is often most admirable. Their lines and their naive ornamentation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book French and English Furniture

Download or read book French and English Furniture written by Esther Singleton and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French and English Furniture: Distinctive Styles and Periods Described and Illustrated The purpose of this work is to provide all who are interested in French and English furniture since the Renaissance period with a comprehensive and detailed view of the various periods or styles. A chapter is devoted to each period, and the chapters naturally vary in size, in accordance with the importance and length of the different periods. So far as I have been able to discover in my researches, there is no work precisely of the same aim and scope as this one in existence. Many books have been written about furniture as a whole, and the history of furniture, - especially the French styles; but I do not know of one that enables the student to learn with slight expenditure of time and energy all that is necessary to know in order to fit up a room in any given style. Anyone who wants to furnish and decorate a Louis XV. boudoir properly, or a Heppelwhite dining-room, or an Empire bedroom, can find all about it in the following pages. Book The Practical Book of Period Furniture

Download or read book The Practical Book of Period Furniture written by Harold Donaldson Eberlein and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Book of Period Furniture: Treating of Furniture of the English, American Colonial and Post-Colonial and Principal French Periods Every book ought to have a definite reason for its being. In the present instance that reason is that hitherto there has never been a book of brief compass and succinct arrangement for ready reference to tell the reader what he wished to know and all that the needed to know in order to identify and classify any piece of period furniture, whether original or a reproduction, that he might own or intend to buy. The Illustrated Chronological Key at the beginning of the book is of inestimable value in showing at a glance the dominant characteristics of each period style. For the idea and plan of this Key the authors are wholly indebted to Edward Stratton Holloway, Esq., of the J. B. Lippincott Company, and they here desire to express their full acknowledgment and appreciation. In the preparation of the following pages the authors have made an extensive and independent examination and analysis of much furniture in many places and trust that they have thereby been enabled to correct some inadvertent errours and inaccuracies and supply some omissions of other books dealing with this subject; they have also made an exhaustive study of the available sources and authorities. They desire to express their obligations to the authors whose works are named in the bibliography, but especially their indebtedness to the illuminating publications of Mr. Macquoid, Mr. Cescinsky, Mr. Foley and Mr. Lockwood. Book How to Collect Old Furniture Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Collect Old Furniture Classic Reprint written by Frederick Litchfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Collect, Old Furniture I have endeavoured to trace the changes in style and fashion from Antique to Mediaeval, from Mediaeval to Renaissance, and from Renais sance to Modern, but in the following notes I have attempted to give the reader some descriptions of the various kinds of furniture, made in different countries, from the sixteenth to the middle of the nineteenth century, omitting the earlier periods. As examples of the latter are seldom seen except in museums, they are, for all practical purposes, unobtainable by the collector of ordinary means. I have tried to convey by explanatory hints and suggestions, advice which may enable the reader to select the example of the period he is in search of, and avoid the imitation and the sham.
