Book excerpt: The Dassault Rafale, designed to replace a number of legacy aircraft types in French Air Force and Naval aviation service, is a 4th+/4th++ generation omnirole combat aircraft, which emerged from the French ACX (Avion de Combat Experimental) program of the early 1980's. This progressed after France withdrew from the consortium of European partner nations, which went on to develop the Eurofighter Typhoon. The Rafale design is centred on a comprehensive multi-sensor avionics suite, embracing the concept of sensor fusion to enhance overall mission effectiveness. The integral internal and external sensors and comprehensive array of precision guided weapons enable Rafale to conduct a plethora of operational missions, ranging from air defence, air to surface strike, including nuclear stand-off strike and maritime surface strike, to reconnaissance intelligence gathering. The volume covers the evolution of the Rafale concept from the early AXC studies that led to the Rafale A technology demonstrator through the succession of serial produced Rafale Standards built or planned - F1to F5. All technical and historical information regarding the aircraft, systems and weapons, have been furnished by the respective designers/developers, as has much of the graphic material, with technical and graphic input from other entities, such as the French Délégué Général pour l'armament and respective operators. Certain segments of updated text, where pertinent, are taken from the volumes 'Dassault Rafale, the Gallic Squall' (Harkins, 2004) and 'Eurofighter Typhoon, Storm over Europe' (Harkins, 2013).

Excerpt: The Dassault M.D.450 Ouragan (French: ) was the first French-designed jet fighter-bomber to enter production, playing a key role in resurgence of the French aviation industry after World War II. The Ouragan was operated by France, Israel, India and El Salvador. While in Israeli service it participated in both the Suez Crisis and Six-Day War. As citizens of an occupied country, the French were not able to contribute significantly to the great strides made in aircraft design made during World War II. After the war, aviation designer Marcel Dassault was eager to re-establish the aviation industry with an all-French jet fighter, which was outlined in 1947. The government response to the proposal was positive and prototype construction began soon after the design was finalized. Detailed design work on the new aircraft, which was given the designation M.D. (Marcel Dassault) 450, began in October 1947, with construction beginning on 7 April 1948 at Dassault's factory in Saint-Cloud. A French government contract for three prototypes followed on 7 December...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The light and agile A-4 Skyhawk was the first modern American jet to be offered to the Israeli Air Force, marking the point where the US took over from France as Israel's chief military supplier. Deliveries began too late for the A-4 to fight in the Six-Day War, but it soon formed the backbone of the IAF's ground-attack force. From 1969 to 1970 it flew endless sorties against Egyptian forces in the War of Attrition. Then, during the Yom Kippur War, five squadrons of A-4s saw combat and 50 planes were lost as they battled against the Arab armored onslaught. Using previously unpublished first-hand accounts and rare photography from the IAF archives and pilots' private collections, Shlomo Aloni tells the definitive history of the IAF's A-4 squadrons, including the story of Ezra “BABAN” Dotan who became an ace with an unique double-kill of MiG17s.

Book A Military History of the Cold War 1962 1991

Download or read book A Military History of the Cold War 1962 1991 written by Jonathan M. House and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study of the Cold War all too often shows us the war that wasn’t fought. The reality, of course, is that many “hot” conflicts did occur, some with the great powers' weapons and approval, others without. It is this reality, and this period of quasi-war and semiconflict, that Jonathan M. House plumbs in A Military History of the Cold War, 1962–1991, a complex case study in the Clausewitzian relationship between policy and military force during a time of global upheaval and political realignment. This volume opens a new perspective on three fraught decades of Cold War history, revealing how the realities of time, distance, resources, and military culture often constrained and diverted the inclinations or policies of world leaders. In addition to the Vietnam War and nuclear confrontations between the USSR and the United States, this period saw dozens of regional wars and insurgencies fought throughout Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Cuba, Pakistan, Indonesia, Israel, Egypt, and South Africa pursued their own goals in ways that drew the superpowers into regional disputes. Even clashes ostensibly unrelated to the politics of East-West confrontation, such as the Nigerian-Biafran conflict, the Falklands/Malvinas War, and the Indonesian occupation of East Timor, involved armed forces, weapons, and tactics developed for the larger conflict and thus come under House’s scrutiny. His study also takes up nontraditional or specialized aspects of the period, including weapons of mass destruction, civil-military relations, civil defense, and control of domestic disorders. The result is a single, integrated survey and analysis of a complex period in geopolitical history, which fills a significant gap in our knowledge of the organization, logistics, operations, and tactics involved in conflict throughout the Cold War.

Book Jet Prototypes of World War II

Download or read book Jet Prototypes of World War II written by Tony Buttler and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While World War II raged, pioneering aircraft and engine designers were busy developing the world's first practical jet-powered research aircraft to test and prove the new technology. This book examines the aircraft that paved the way for Germany's Me 262 and Britain's Meteor - the world's first jet fighters. Throughout the war, Germany, Italy and Britain engaged in top-secret jet programmes as they raced to develop the airpower of the future. Various experimental aircraft were trialled in order to achieve the goal of producing an effective engine and fighter that could harness the potential of the jet power. These included the German Heinkel He 178 research aircraft and Heinkel He 280 jet fighter prototype, the famed British E.28/39 research aircraft built by Gloster Aircraft as well as the stillborn E.5/42 fighter and E.1/44 Ace fighter prototype, and finally the remarkable Italian Caproni-Campini N.1/CC 2 research aircraft. Illustrated throughout with full-colour artwork and rare photographs, this fascinating study examines the fore-runners to the military jet age.
