The study reveals that these "strangers" organised themselves in Pressure Groups in order to fight for equal opportunities with the indigenes and when such opportunities were not coming, they initiated the Reunification Idea, propagated it and converted many reluctant Southern Cameroonians. They militated in pro-reunification political parties such as the KNC, KNDP, UPC and OK and successfully shifted the reunification idea from the periphery to the centre of Southern Cameroons decolonisation politics. The immigrants convinced the UN through petitions and reunification which was the most unpopular option for independence became one of the two alternatives at the 1961 plebiscite. They and the reluctant KNDP campaigned and voted for it. The Reunification of Cameroon was therefore the handiwork of French Cameroon immigrants.

Book excerpt: As a German colony from 1884-1916, Kamerun was called "The African Pearl" for its human and material potential, and for its strategic position in Africa. The defeat of Germany in the First World War and the partition of the colony into British Cameroons and French Cameroun did not diminish the area's outsize role in the political and economic evolution of the continent. So, the quest by the land's civic nationalists to reunite the British-controlled and French-controlled territories and make Cameroon independent, raised concerns among the colonialists in Britain and France, who planned to retain the unchecked influence their countries were having in the former German colony. Cameroon became independent and partially reunited in 1961, but with the exclusion of its civic nationalists who were banned, their leaders killed, imprisoned or exiled, and the general population suppressed and cowed. Put in power in the pseudo-independent Cameroon, to maintain a system guaranteed by the colonial pact France made Cameroon and other Francophone territories to sign before granting them independence in the 1960s, was France's puppet Ahmadou Ahidjo. The system is still in place today, albeit under the second puppet leadership of Paul Biya who has been in power for 45 years (10 years as Prime Minister and 35 years as President). Every passing year has exposed the system's unsustainability and absurdity as Cameroon declines and continues to lose its place as "The African Pearl" and the pace-setter in the Central African region. But not until the rise to prominence of the once insignificant former Spanish colony of Equatorial Guinea, a country without the constraints of a Colonial Pact, that has somehow harnessed its new-found oil wealth to develop the land to the point where it is on the verge of becoming a First World Nation, has its Francophone neighbors, of which Cameroon is the largest, suddenly become astir from the doldrums. Today, the citizens of these former French colonies whose leaders are French puppets that have been squandering the resources of the land to satisfy their whims and the whims of their puppeteers, can no longer ignore the fact that the French-imposed system has nothing to offer. Can Cameroon's civic-nationalists, who are currently in disarray, whisk their country and the Central African region out of seven decades of decay through a new system that would stimulate development and guarantee the values of freedom, tolerance, equality and individual rights cherished by the rest of the civilized world?

The introduction overviews the historical background of the country and its geographic and linguistic situations. Part One deals with the didactics of English in Cameroon; it comprises three chapters which take up in turn the languages in the education system of the country, the teaching of English in primary and secondary schools as well as tertiary level institutions. Part Two, which tackles the description of the English speech of francophone users, first outlines the research design. Then it takes up the sound system of francophone English, focusing on the realisations of consonants and vowels, and stress placement. Next it examines the vocabulary of this variety of English and finds that it is characterised by an excessive use of direct loan, calque, and false friends. This is followed by a description of the morpho-syntactic features of the variety. The frequent features identified can be grouped under 12 major categories of items, i.e., verb tenses, articles, the plural form in noun phrases, pronouns, word order, subject-verb agreement, adverbs, prepositions, question formation, negation, verbs in embedded clauses, and serial verbs. Lastly, drawing from the findings outlined in these linguistic analyses, the researcher makes an appraisal of Cameroon’s French-English official bilingualism policy. The various measures taken over the years by Government to promote official bilingualism are evaluated first. Then the consequences of the failure of this policy are considered. Finally a way forward is proposed: there is a need to adopt a new syllabus purposely designed to enhance bilingual competence among francophones in the country. Francophone English as Kouega notes, is a dialect of English that is developing in a number of Expanding Circles countries where French has hitherto been the sole or primary medium of instruction. In Cameroon, francophone children learn English as a subject from primary school alongside other subjects like geography, which are taught in French. English is taught as a subject from the primary to the tertiary level of education. It is taught in all schools as part of the implementation of the country’s French-English official bilingualism policy that was adopted in 1961 when French Cameroon and English Cameroon united to form a federal state.
