Book excerpt: When the French Government declared a general mobilisation on the 1 August 1914, no one who witnessed the scenes of great exuberant patriotism, could have envisaged the speed with which the mood of the nation would deteriorate. The war of attrition that the frontline troops found themselves embroiled in gradually eroded their optimism and engendered a feeling that they were "une génération sacrifiée". This book, in part, gives an insight into a largely under-reported component of France's war effort but one which would prove critical in raising morale and establishing a bridge in understanding and empathy between soldiers and civilians. The fundraising Journées were administered by a profusion of local committees often overseen, with government approval, by municipal authorities such as the prefects and mayors. These campaigns relied on a close relationship between voluntary organizations and the state and as a result arguably set a tone of national philanthropic unity that would last for the duration of the war and beyond.The vast majority of the Journées involved selling small mementos such as medals and insignias to raise funds for a variety of deserving causes. These miniature 'works of art' proved enormously popular with the general public and undoubtedly contributed to the success of the Journées. Thankfully many of the items were regarded, even during the war period, as collector's items and many have been preserved in museums and private collections.The main purpose of The Journées 1914 - 1919 is to build on the acclaimed work of Roger de Bayle des Hermens who compiled a comprehensive reference catalogue of the insignias and medals produced for both the national and regional Journées. With the benefit of internet research facilities, together with access to private papers and collections, the author has produced a detailed, up-to-date catalogue of the national Journées.

Book Paris Sees It Through

Download or read book Paris Sees It Through written by H. Pearl Adam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paris Sees It Through: A Diary, 1914-1919 On the other hand, if the universe is an accident, and emanates from no mind at all, this life is all we have, and we cling to it. We do our best to make safe the thing we believe in. This world for the materialist; the next for the devout; the inner world for the thinker and the emotionalist. The human spirit may be all that it is said to be a dauntless and heroic affair, equal to facing any odds. The human body, however, which is the casket of the spirit, is unfortunately softer than the greater part of inanimate substances. Had it been harder than the earth, than iron, than steel, we might have made a show of safety in our arrangements. But there would have remained lightning and ice and fog, and the possibility of meteorites, which can go to rest in a granite mountain like a fat man jumping into a feather-bed. The fact is, we are searching for a thing we cannot conceive. Safety is as much outside our conscious ness as some star of which we have never heard. We cannot conceive, by the highest efforts of our brains, what it would be like for one instant to have the esh of our body safe in this world or the comfort of our spirit assured in the next. The sensation, if it were imparted to us by a. Miracle, would probably kill us. The nearest approach to it known to us is the ecstasy of a revivalist meeting, which usually bears an ample aftermath of lunacy on the one hand and crime on the other. Those who are strong enough to survive the feeling of being saved without losing their mental balance quite frequently go and commit some Specially vile kind of offence. Download or read book Trench Art written by Nicholas J. Saunders and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engraved shell-cases, bullet-crucifixes, letter openers and cigarette lighters made of shrapnel and cartridges, miniature airplanes and tanks, talismanic jewelry, embroidery, objects carved from stone, bone and wood - all of these things are trench art, the misleading name given to the dazzling array of objects made from the waste of war, in particular the Great War of 1914-1918 and the inter-war years. And they are the subject of Nicholas Saunders's pioneering study which is now republished in a revised edition in paperback. He reveals the lost world of trench art, for every piece relates to the story of the momentous experience of its maker - whether front-line soldier, prisoner of war, or civilian refugee. The objects resonate with the alternating terror and boredom of war, and those created by the prisoners symbolize their struggle for survival in the camps. Many of these items were poignant souvenirs bought by battlefield pilgrims between 1919 and 1939 and kept brightly polished on mantelpieces, often for a lifetime. Nicholas Saunders investigates their origins and how they were made, exploring their personal meaning and cultural significance. He also offers an important categorization of types which will be a useful guide for collectors.

Book World War I and the Visual Arts

Download or read book World War I and the Visual Arts written by Jennifer Farrell and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published on the occasion of the centenary of World War I, this Bulletin, which accompanies the related exhibition “World War I and the Visual Arts,” on view at The Met until January 7, 2018, explores the myriad and often contradictory ways in which artists responded to the world’s first modern war. Drawn primarily from The Met’s collection of works on paper and supplemented with loans from private collections, both presentations move chronologically from the initial mobilization in early August 1914 to the tumultuous decade that followed the armistice of November 1918. Ranging from expressions of bellicose enthusiasm to sentiments of regret, grief, and anger, the selected works—from prints, photographs, and drawings to propaganda posters, postcards, and commemorative medals—powerfully evoke the conflicting emotions of this complex period. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}
