Book Keep Your Airspeed Up

Download or read book Keep Your Airspeed Up written by Harold H. Brown and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspiring memoir of Colonel Harold H. Brown, one of the 930 original Tuskegee pilots, whose dramatic wartime exploits and postwar professional successes contribute to this extraordinary account. Keep Your Airspeed Up: The Story of a Tuskegee Airman is the memoir of an African American man who, through dedication to his goals and vision, overcame the despair of racial segregation to great heights, not only as a military aviator, but also as an educator and as an American citizen. Unlike other historical and autobiographical portrayals of Tuskegee airmen, Harold H. Brown’s memoir is told from its beginnings: not on the first day of combat, not on the first day of training, but at the very moment Brown realized he was meant to be a pilot. He revisits his childhood in Minneapolis where his fascination with planes pushed him to save up enough of his own money to take flying lessons. Brown also details his first trip to the South, where he was met with a level of segregation he had never before experienced and had never imagined possible. During the 1930s and 1940s, longstanding policies of racial discrimination were called into question as it became clear that America would likely be drawn into World War II. The military reluctantly allowed for the development of a flight-training program for a limited number of African Americans on a segregated base in Tuskegee, Alabama. The Tuskegee Airmen, as well as other African Americans in the armed forces, had the unique experience of fighting two wars at once: one against Hitler’s fascist regime overseas and one against racial segregation at home. Colonel Brown fought as a combat pilot with the 332nd Fighter Group during World War II, and was captured and imprisoned in Stalag VII A in Moosburg, Germany, where he was liberated by General George S. Patton on April 29, 1945. Upon returning home, Brown noted with acute disappointment that race relations in the United States hadn’t changed. It wasn’t until 1948 that the military desegregated, which many scholars argue would not have been possible without the exemplary performance of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Book Death before Sentencing

Download or read book Death before Sentencing written by Andrew R. Klein and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have jails become the deadliest waiting rooms in America? Death before Sentencing provides a sweeping exposé of thousands of avoidable deaths that have occurred in the U.S. county and local jail systems within the past few decades. These deaths have been overlooked, under-investigated, and even covered-up as jail systems avoid responsibility and refuse to take action. This is the most complete investigation of the deadly side of jails, describing the daily deaths of detainees, including those from suicides, untreated drug and alcohol withdrawal, forced restraint and brutality, and general medical malpractice provided by for-profit correctional medical providers. The lack of attention and responsibility paid by state and local officials, law enforcement, and medical examiners has facilitated these ongoing and increasing avoidable deaths. Looking forward to reforms being initiated by the U.S. Justice Department Civil Rights Division and within state legislatures and celebrating successful lawsuits, Andrew R. Klein lays out institutional reforms required to curtail the epidemic of the daily deaths in America’s jails.

Book Media Society

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Croteau
  • Publisher : SAGE Publications
  • Release : 2011-05-24
  • ISBN : 1412974208
  • Pages : 417 pages

Download or read book Media Society written by David Croteau and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2011-05-24 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a society saturated by mass media, from newspapers and magazines, television and radio, to digital video projects and the Internet, iPods and TiVo, most students possess a great deal of media knowledge and experience before they ever enter the classroom. What they often lack, however, is a broader framework for understanding the relationship between media and society. Media/Society: Industries, Images, and Audiences provides that context and helps students develop skills for critically evaluating both conventional wisdom and onee(tm)s own assumptions about the social role of the media. Previous editions of Media/Society introduced thousands of students to a sociologically informed analysis of the media process. The Fourth Edition builds on this success with new material on students as producers (e.g., YouTube), revised Internet resources, the latest data on the media industry, new examples from the independent media sector, and updated discussions of media policy, online media, and independent media. Media/Society is unique among media texts in that it offers: e A sociological approach that examines overarching relationships between the various components of the media process - the industry, its products, audiences, technology - and the broader social world e An integrated study of mass media that looks at media technologies, collective influences, and connections between mass media issues that are often treated as separate e An examination of how economic and political constraints affect the media and how audiences actively construct their own interpretations of media messages
