Download or read book Freeway Incident Management written by David H. Roper and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1990 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to traffic engineers, planners, and others interested in how highway agencies deal with freeway incidents. Information is provided on the procedures and processes that highway agencies use to respond to traffic congestion caused by incidents on freeways. Congestion on freeways frequently is caused by incidents such as stalled vehicles or accidents that reduce the capacity of the freeway below the level of demand. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the procedures and processes used by states to respond to traffic congestion caused by incidents on freeways.
Download or read book Safe and Quick Clearance of Traffic Incidents written by Walter M. Dunn and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2003 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 318: Safe and Quick Clearance of Traffic Incidents profiles laws, policies, and procedures for facilitating clearance of traffic incidents, primarily those initially blocking travel lanes and attended to by the vehicle operator, on highways in urban and rural areas. The report discusses quick clearance legislation, hold harmless laws, policies governing the removal of accident victims, the duties of private tow companies, and more.

Download or read book Control Strategies in Response to Freeway Incidents written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New control strategies have been developed for responding to freeway incidents. Two types of incident situations were considered. In Situation 1, control is only needed at on-ramps in the immediate vicinity of the incident site. In Situation 2, control is also needed on freeway segments and connectors located upstream of the freeway segment containing the incident. The strategies were extensively tested under a wide variety of simulated incident conditions. Guidelines on strategy selection and usage in an operational environment have been prepared. Functional requirements have also been developed for an on-line incident control strategy evaluator which could pre-test the merits of several candidate strategies.

Book excerpt: This handbook, which was developed in recognition of the need for the compilation and dissemination of information on advanced traffic control systems, presents the basic principles for the planning, design, and implementation of such systems for urban streets and freeways. The presentation concept and organization of this handbook is developed from the viewpoint of systems engineering. Traffic control studies are described, and traffic control and surveillance concepts are reviewed. Hardware components are outlined, and computer concepts, and communication concepts are stated. Local and central controllers are described, as well as display, television and driver information systems. Available systems technology and candidate system definition, evaluation and implementation are also covered. The management of traffic control systems is discussed.
Download or read book Feasibility of Using In Vehicle Video Data to Explore How to Modify Driver Behavior That Causes Nonrecurring Congestion written by Hesham Rakha and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research report - a product of the Reliability focus area of the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) - presents findings on the feasibility of using existing in-vehicle data sets, collected in naturalistic driving settings, to make inferences about the relationship between observed driver behavior and nonrecurring congestion. General guidance is provided on the protocols and procedures for conducting video data reduction analysis. In addition, the report includes technical guidance on the features, technologies, and complementary data sets that researchers should consider when designing future instrumented in-vehicle data collection studies. Finally, a new modeling approach is advanced for travel time reliability performance measurement across a variety of traffic congestion conditions"--Publisher's description.
