Book Free Slaves Freetown and the Sierra Leonean Civil War

Download or read book Free Slaves Freetown and the Sierra Leonean Civil War written by Joseph Kaifala and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a historical narrative covering various periods in Sierra Leone’s history from the fifteenth century to the end of its civil war in 2002. It entails the history of Sierra Leone from its days as a slave harbor through to its founding as a home for free slaves, and toward its political independence and civil war. In 1462, the country was discovered by a Portuguese explorer, Pedro de Sintra, who named it Serra Lyoa (Lion Mountains). Sierra Leone later became a lucrative hub for the Transatlantic Slave Trade. At the end of slavery in England, Freetown was selected as a home for the Black Poor, free slaves in England after the Somerset ruling. The Black Poor were joined by the Nova Scotians, American slaves who supported or fought with the British during the American Revolution. The Maroons, rebellious slaves from Jamaica, arrived in 1800. The Recaptives, freed in enforcement of British antislavery laws, were also taken to Freetown. Freetown became a British colony in 1808 and Sierra Leone obtained political independence from Britain in 1961. The development of the country was derailed by the death of its first Prime Minister, Sir Milton Margai, and thirty years after independence the country collapsed into a brutal civil war.

Book New Perspectives on the Sierra Leone Krio

Download or read book New Perspectives on the Sierra Leone Krio written by Mac Dixon-Fyle and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ex-slave, Krio population of Freetown, Sierra Leone - an amalgam of ethnicities drawn from several parts of the African continent - is a fascinating study in hybridity, creolization, European cultural penetration, the retention of African cultural values, and the interface between New World returnees and autochthonous populations of West Africa. Although its Nigerian connections are often acknowledged, insufficient attention has been paid to the indigenous Sierra Leonean roots of this community. This anthology addresses this problem, while celebrating the complexities of Krio identity and Krio interaction with other ethnic groups and nationalities in the British colonial experience.

Book A History of the Freetown City Council

Download or read book A History of the Freetown City Council written by George Samuel Oluwole Anthony and published by . This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Province of Freedom, later Freetown Sierra Leone was established in 1787 as a home for freed slaves who had served various commercial entrepreneurs in the West Indies and North America. Some had even fought on the side of the British during the American War of Independence. They had been promised their freedom and the opportunity presented itself, a place they could call their own. This proposal took concrete form in 1787 when the Province of Freedom was established in Sierra Leone. This book attempts to portray the tensions within such a planted settlement as the settlers tried various methods of 'self government' under a rather domineering colonial regime directed and orchestrated by the Colonial Office in London. This book traces the history of the movement and the tensions between the colonial authority and a rapidly developing educated elite among the settlers who had become known as the Krio and who spoke a dialect also called Krio. The issues revolved around the desire of the Krio to break free from 'white' domination and to establish a self-governing colony. Since this was not possible at that point in time, the Freetown City Council served as the main political platform for the political life of the Krio. However with no proper support and at times even fierce opposition from the powers that be, who increasingly came to regard the Krio as a dangerous irritant and a hindrance to good government, an atmosphere was created in which any faltering steps from the Krio would be fatal to their political situation as happened in 1926 when the incumbent Mayor was accused of malpractices, tried, found guilty and jailed. The book concludes with a cursory look at the interim periods between the dissolution of the council in 1926 and 1945 when the municipality was reinstituted.

Book Historical Dictionary of Sierra Leone

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Sierra Leone written by Magbaily C. Fyle and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006-03-27 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sierra Leone was founded, albeit under British control, with the highest hopes of being a refuge for liberated Africans and freed slaves. When the country received its independence, hopes for the future grew even stronger. Alas, its expectations came crashing down when the country's situation grew steadily worse after repeated military interventions and a devastating ten-year civil war that raged throughout the 1990s. Now that the war is over, there is once again renewed cause for optimism about the country's future, as Sierra Leone becomes an active participant in African and world affairs. This new edition is based primarily on recent research on the country, but covers the earliest known inhabitants, the colonial era, and the period of independence including the very confusing turmoil of the recent past. The chronology briefly traces its history and the introduction provides an essential overview of all the recent developments in the country. Hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries describe significant leaders, events, political parties and movements, ethnic groups, and related political, economic, and social aspects. A bibliography is included to facilitate further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an intriguing account of the complex and often contradictory relations between music and society in Freetown's past and present. Blending anthropological thought with ethnographic and historical research, it explores the conjunctures of music practices and social affiliations and the diverse patterns of social dis/connections that music helps to shape, to (re)create, and to defy in Sierra Leone's capital Freetown. The first half of the book traces back the changing social relationships and the concurrent changes in the city's music life from the first days of the colony in the late 18th century up to the turbulent and thriving music scenes in the first decade of the 21st century. Grounded in this comprehensive historiography of Freetown's socio-musical palimpsest, the second half of the book puts forth a detailed ethnography of social dynamics in the realms of music, calibrating contemporary Freetown's social polyphony with its musical counterpart.

Download or read book Fevers Feuds and Diamonds written by Paul Farmer and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Paul Farmer brings his considerable intellect, empathy, and expertise to bear in this powerful and deeply researched account of the Ebola outbreak that struck West Africa in 2014. It is hard to imagine a more timely or important book.” —Bill and Melinda Gates "[The] history is as powerfully conveyed as it is tragic . . . Illuminating . . . Invaluable." —Steven Johnson, The New York Times Book Review In 2014, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea suffered the worst epidemic of Ebola in history. The brutal virus spread rapidly through a clinical desert where basic health-care facilities were few and far between. Causing severe loss of life and economic disruption, the Ebola crisis was a major tragedy of modern medicine. But why did it happen, and what can we learn from it? Paul Farmer, the internationally renowned doctor and anthropologist, experienced the Ebola outbreak firsthand—Partners in Health, the organization he founded, was among the international responders. In Fevers, Feuds, and Diamonds, he offers the first substantive account of this frightening, fast-moving episode and its implications. In vibrant prose, Farmer tells the harrowing stories of Ebola victims while showing why the medical response was slow and insufficient. Rebutting misleading claims about the origins of Ebola and why it spread so rapidly, he traces West Africa’s chronic health failures back to centuries of exploitation and injustice. Under formal colonial rule, disease containment was a priority but care was not – and the region’s health care woes worsened, with devastating consequences that Farmer traces up to the present. This thorough and hopeful narrative is a definitive work of reportage, history, and advocacy, and a crucial intervention in public-health discussions around the world.
