Book The Erotic Thriller in Contemporary Cinema

Download or read book The Erotic Thriller in Contemporary Cinema written by Linda Ruth Williams and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bold and original book examines in detail a relatively new genre of film--the erotic thriller. Linda Ruth Williams traces the genre's exploitation of pornography and noir, discusses mainstream stars (including Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone) as well as genre-branded direct-to-video stars, charts the work of key producers and directors, and considers home videos as a distinct form of viewing pleasure. She maps the history of the genre, analyzing hundreds of movies from blockbusters such as Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, and In the Cut to straight-to-video film titles such as Carnal Crimes, Sins of Desire, and Night Eyes. Williams's witty and illuminating readings tell the story of this sensational genre and contribute to the analysis of mainstream screen sex--and its censorship--at the beginning of the 21st century. She shows that as the erotic thriller plays out the sexual fantasies of contemporary America, it also provides a vehicle for marketing those fantasies globally.

Book Imaginative Resistance Queer Fiction and the Law

Download or read book Imaginative Resistance Queer Fiction and the Law written by Aleardo Zanghellini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaginative Resistance, Queer Fiction and the Law develops a novel account of how heteronormative sociolegal orders undermine the well-being of same-sex attracted people, even when these normative orders may fall short of coercively interfering with their choices. Queer well-being is generally studied from psychological perspectives, through the concept of ‘minority stress.’ Taking four texts of mid-century Anglo-American queer fiction as illustrative case studies, this book argues – in a philosophical rather than a psychological register – that heteronormativity also affects queer well-being in more intangible ways. The central claim is that heteronormativity shackles the imagination: it curtails no less the imaginative reach of authors of queer fiction, than our ability – engaged as we are in projects of self-authorship – to make-believe personal futures in which same-sex intimacy is brought to bear on our well-being. The book’s central claim re-works a concept central to the philosophy of fiction – ‘imaginative resistance’ – and puts it into service of questions raised in moral philosophy. Apart from its political and normative implications – strengthening the case for at least some global gay rights – and from challenging some of queer theory’s orthodoxies, the book also makes contributions to queer literary history, criticism and biography. Drawing on archival material and personal interviews, fresh readings are offered of Charles Jackson’s The Fall of Valor (1946), Gillian Freeman’s The Leather Boys (1961), and Patricia Highsmith’s The Price of Salt (1952) and The Talented Mr Ripley (1955), making a case for their inclusion in the queer literary canon. Imaginative Resistance, Queer Fiction and the Law will appeal to students of literary criticism, queer sociolegal history, law & literature, the philosophy of fiction, and queer theory, politics and ethics.

Book Colonus

  • Author : Ken Pisani
  • Publisher : Dark Horse Comics
  • Release : 2016-07-05
  • ISBN : 1630087459
  • Pages : 91 pages

Download or read book Colonus written by Ken Pisani and published by Dark Horse Comics. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future: a dying Earth has been abandoned, the poor and weak left behind. While Earth's elite survivors colonized Mars, its outcasts--the miscreants, criminals, fringe-dwellers, crackpot scientists, and sociopaths--fled inward, to Venus ("a place fit for scumbags"). Three generations later, the denizens of Venus, strengthened by hardship forged in brutality and hellish conditions, are thriving. Attracted by the successful launch of Venus's second floating "cloud city," the corporate fascists of the Mars Council launch an insurgency for control of Venus... but Braxton, the third generation leader of this colony of outlaws, will fight to save his family dynasty. Previously published in Dark Horse Presents, this is the collection--and continuation--of Ken Pisani and Arturo Lauria's highly praised sci-fi drama Colonus. "COLONUS quenches its audience's thirst for intelligent science fiction via a cocktail of killer art, grounded characters, and unique world building--finished off with a splash of subversion." -Nicole Perlman, Guardians of the Galaxy screenwriter "Loved it! COLONUS is another fresh take on what the future holds for mankind. This is the kind of sci-fi I live for." --Jimmy Palmiotti, Harley Quinn, Painkiller Jane "A hell of a story with echoes of Arthur C. Clarke and Greek tragedy, one that gives us an image of our own times." --Denny O'Neil, Batman, Green Lantern/Green Arrow "Big, expansive, filled with a rich curiosity of distant worlds and people, all of which become vehicles for examining humanity in its barest form." --Michael Moreci, Hoax Hunters, Roche Limit "Bada bing! A mob war in space! Bad ass and righteous--even Tony's crew would not f*ck with these guys!" --Joe Gannascoli, The Sopranos "Total Recall on steroids. If Frank Miller and Mike Mignola had a love child, his name would be Arturo Lauria. I'm drooling for the next chapter." --Monkeys Fighting Robots "5 out of 5 stars! Pisani creates a world that is so immediately believable that it's almost too scary to read. And speaking of horrific, Lauria's artwork is amazing and terrifying and compelling all in one." --comicbooked.com "High concept...but also effortless. FANTASTIC premise, an incredible, brilliant allegory on the growth of nations into power. Arturo Lauria's artwork is striking a bold." --The Beat: Comics Culture "A great balance of sci-fi, a touch of horror, and a perfect dash of quirk. Gritty...with just the right amount of deadpan humor mixed in." --Comics Grinder "Arturo Lauria has created a future full of hard edges, sharp angles, and hard contrast. It's strange, but...beautiful (granted, in a dark, terrifying way)." --All Geek to Me "Fun, smart sci-fi with a striking visual style. We need more sci-fi like COLONUS in comics!" -Fred Van Lente, X-Men Noir, Spider-man, Archer & Armstrong "An intergalactic good time." -expertcomics.com

Book Adapting Stephen King

Download or read book Adapting Stephen King written by Joseph Maddrey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen King's fiction has formed the basis of more motion picture adaptations than any other living author. Over half a century since his earliest publications, Hollywood filmmakers continue to reinvent, reimagine, remake, and reboot King's stories, with mixed results. This book, volume 1 in a series, examines the various screen adaptations of King's first three novels: Carrie, Salem's Lot, and The Shining. Reaching further than questions of fidelity to the author and adherence to directorial visions, it charts the development of each individual adaptation from first option to final cut. Through old and new interviews with the writers, producers, and directors of these films--as well as in-depth analyses of produced and unproduced screenplays--it illuminates the adaptation process as an intricately collaborative endeavor. Rather than merely synopsize the resulting stories, its goal is to compare, contrast, and contextualize each of these adaptations as the products of their creators.

Book The Middle Ages and the Movies

Download or read book The Middle Ages and the Movies written by Robert Bartlett and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal to Monty Python, an investigation into how eight key films have shaped our understanding of the medieval world. In The Middle Ages and the Movies, eminent historian Robert Bartlett takes a fresh, cogent look at how our view of medieval history has been shaped by eight significant films of the twentieth century. The book ranges from the concoction of sex and nationalism in Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, to Fritz Lang’s silent epic Siegfried, the art-house classic The Seventh Seal, and the epic historical drama El Cid. Bartlett examines the historical accuracy of these films, as well as other salient aspects—how was Umberto Eco’s Name of the Rose translated from page to screen? Why is Monty Python and the Holy Grail funny? And how was Eisenstein’s Alexander Nevsky shaped by the Stalinist tyranny under which it was filmed?
