Book excerpt: An "intelligent and entertaining" tale. (Kirkus Reviews): Priya is thrilled when she's recruited to serve in the spaceborne military. But she's soon forced to volunteer for a dangerous mission - and finds her life at stake... "For nail-biting science fiction thrillers, look no further than one of Rothman's stories" (New York Times bestselling author Larry Correia). ------ Aliens exist... and, as it turns out, most of them are fairly harmless. It's the humans you need to watch out for. Priya Radcliffe wasn't even born yet when the first set of terrorists struck. She was seventeen when they struck again, but this time her parents paid the ultimate price. That was seven years ago, and since then, the United Nations finally agreed to field its first spaceborne military. Serving aboard one of the first true starships had been a dream of hers. All of her years of education and training had been geared for entering the service. However, just before Priya's graduation, she's approached by an officer from a military branch she'd never heard of and given a choice: volunteer for a risky mission to an outpost she knows nothing about or be excluded from serving. She had no choice.

Book A Rebel to His Last Breath

Download or read book A Rebel to His Last Breath written by Bill Cooke and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first biography of Joseph McCabe (1867-1955), a former Catholic preist who became one of the best-known champions and a prolific popularizer of freethought and rationalism in the first half of the 20th century. McCabe's encyclopedic curiosity, rigorous scholarship, and above all his unswerving intellectual honesty led him through a tumultuous career of public lecturing and debating, and an incredible output of over 200 books. He tackled the most controversial issues of the modern era: evolution, biblical errancy, belief in God, immorality, spiritualism, capitalism vs. socialism, women's rights, and many other topics. Much of his writing was published in the form of the "Little Blue Books" by E. Haldeman-Julius, who declared McCabe to be "the world's greatest scholar." Today in our postmodern period, where Enlightenment values are being questioned and irrationalism in many guises has become fashionable, McCabe's gift for rational inquiry, respect for scientific evidence, and lucid, no-nonsense prose are both relevant and welcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Author Patrick Tobin was born in County Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland in 1965. He was raised in St Anns in Nottingham after his mother took him and his three older sisters to England. After their father failed to return to their home to their home in Ireland, having left Ireland not long after Patrick was born. His father suffered from schizophrenia and was a chronic alcoholic. His long suffering mother was a devout catholic and seemed determined that her son wouldn't be too influenced by his fathers extravagant behaviour. As he grew up however, it was only by the age of 10, not long after his parents were eventually divorced in 1974. That the first real affects were beginning to become apparent to those concerned. He was admitted to a children's psychiatric unit and would be later discharged then re-admitted. He was later sent to a residential school for malajusted children around the age of 13. Blaisdon Hall in Gloucestershire would now become his home for the next three years before leaving aged 16. On his return to Nottingham Patrick almost immediately joined a band and set out on a career in music to his mothers displeasure. Although later he would eventually secure a contract and was signed to MCA in 1987. Unfortunately it was at this time in his life when he was attaining the success he craved. That another heavy breakdown occurred whilst in London recording at MCA studio's. This time he was diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder he was aged now 23. The Moons Last Gasp is about what had led up to the breakdowns by detailing a family history of mental health issues and a recurring theme of mental health issues. Patrick's incredible drive for success to attain his fathers love and approval unconditionally took his mind and nearly his life. This is a story of how an environment of violence, alcoholism, sexual abuse and systematic family denial has led to a life of unadulterated suffering, madness and eventually the struggle for the truth and of coarse freedom. However, while in therapy it became apparent that there must have been an early abuse when he was an infant and it was this abuse which is at the core of his psychosis and madness. What's more amazing is the fascinating insight this abuse has given him into his condition and the suffering and compassion for others. It was after a serious attempted suicide and his painful recovery from his own alcoholism and the self destructive way of life. That this book began to be written and the metamorphosis of his life into a dynamic radical philosophy, to "manage" his mental health condition into a realistic way of dealing with the severity of ongoing severe mental health. It is at times extremely sad, yet a humorous style of writing and the sense of humor which shines through. Describing in great detail some of the situations and circumstances which led up to the current diagnosis e now has. It is both entertaining, poignant and a brutally frank account of his existence. It is also a fight for self autonomy and an existential do-it-yourself self analysis. And how to strive to overcome decades of self medicating and turn "what little there is left" into something "that is worth far more than what's gone before." Patrick still lives in Nottingham writes poetry and intends to write a his first fictional novel within the next year.

Book excerpt: We is a dystopian novel written by Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin. Originally drafted in Russian, the book could be published only abroad. It was translated into English in 1924. Even as the book won a wide readership overseas, the author's satiric depiction led to his banishment under Joseph Stalin's regime in the then USSR. The book's depiction of life under a totalitarian state influenced the other novels of the 20th century. Like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four, We describes a future socialist society that has turned out to be not perfect but inhuman. Orwell claimed that Brave New World must be partly derived from We, but Huxley denied this. The novel is set in the future. D-503, a spacecraft engineer, lives in the One State which assists mass surveillance. Here life is scientifically managed. There is no way of referring to people except by their given numbers. The society is run strictly by reason as the primary justification for the construct of the society. By way of formulae and equations outlined by the One State, the individual's behaviour is based on logic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With control of both the House and Senate up for grabs in 2018 and the direction of the nation resting on the outcome, never has a more savage, unrelenting fight been waged in the raptor cage that is the U.S. congress. The Hill to Die On will be an unforgettable story of power and politics, where the stakes are nothing less than the future of America under Trump.

This book is dedicated to everyone who is misguided enough to believe the world has evolved au natural. Book My Last Sigh

Book excerpt: A provocative memoir from Luis Buñuel, the Academy Award winning creator of some of modern cinema's most important films, from Un Chien Andalou to The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Luis Buñuel’s films have the power to shock, inspire, and reinvent our world. Now, in a memoir that carries all the surrealism and subversion of his cinema, Buñuel turns his artistic gaze inward. In swift and generous prose, Buñuel traces the surprising contours of his life, from the Good Friday drumbeats of his childhood to the dreams that inspired his most famous films to his turbulent friendships with Federico García Lorca and Salvador Dalí. His personal narratives also encompass the pressing political issues of his time, many of which still haunt us today—the specter of fascism, the culture wars, the nuclear bomb. Filled with film trivia, framed by Buñuel’s intellect and wit, this is essential reading for fans of cinema and for anyone who has ever wanted to see the world through a surrealist’s eyes.

Book It Is Dangerous to Be Right When the Government Is Wrong

Download or read book It Is Dangerous to Be Right When the Government Is Wrong written by Andrew P. Napolitano and published by Thomas Nelson Inc. This book was released on 2011-10-18 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judge Andrew P. Napolitano examines the concept the government hates and fears the most: Freedom. The United States of America was born out of a bloody revolt against tyranny. Yet almost from its inception, the government here has suppressed liberty. In his sixth book on the Constitution and human freedom, Judge Andrew P. Napolitano asks: Where does freedom come from? How can government in America exercise power that the people have not given to it? What forces have collaborated to destroy personal freedom? In this back-to-basics on freedom, Judge Napolitano addresses hard questions: Do we still have a Constitution? What are the limits to government power in a free society? Why does the government attack, rather than defend, our rights? If our rights are inalienable, how can the government take them away? Do we really own any private property? The Judge gives a sweeping treatment of natural rights and all the philosophical, religious, and ideological principles that underscore the concept of human freedom.

Book Corpus III

  • Author : Jean-Luc Nancy
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press

  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Corpus III written by Jean-Luc Nancy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautiful, profound series of reflections on the body by one of the most prominent and consequential philosophers of continental Europe This landmark volume brings into English Jean-Luc Nancy’s last completed work and concludes his remarkable philosophical reflections on the body, a project he began almost thirty years ago. Taking the body as an intersection of pulsing life and destructive cruelty on a global scale, Nancy’s account becomes more vivid, more physical, than ever, even as it ventures into language that is as lyrical as it is profound. This vividness is manifest in blood: as it flows, in all its pulsing and forceful circulation, and as it spills, in the cruelty of existences confronted daily by countless destructions. This can be described as sanguis and cruor, the two Latin words for blood’s intermingled but distinct aspects. This distinction allows Nancy to highlight an almost mystical sense of the body (yet one that remains soberly on this side of its manifest insistence), alongside the cruelty that pervades our world—a world whose very existence is threatened by its reduction to mere objects. The exceptional writings brought together in Corpus III comprise a masterful work of philosophy that marries rigorous erudition—on Freud, Nietzsche, and others—with rich poetic language and an actual poem. Nancy’s thought opens the body onto its own unaccountable origins, its plural singularities, its enmeshed instantiations, and its excessive irreducibles, which are also the elusive excesses of language. Whereas in earlier texts Nancy has referred to this excess as poetry, here he performs it in the form of a poem, in the extraordinary hymn entitled Stoma. While the publication of a poem by Nancy is a notable event, equally noteworthy is a remarkable essay entitled “Scandalous Death,” in which Nancy meditated on a subject that was to come to him too soon after. Above all, the book is crucial for bringing into English Cruor, the very last book Nancy completed before his death, an evocative meditation offered by a great thinker on the complex conditions of his own—and our—singular survival.
