Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the outset, when man had his relationship with God altered by his disobedience in the garden of Eden, the altar has been an answer. God had to cover Adam and Eve with animal skin, an indication that there was a shedding of blood. There was the first altar so used by God Himself. The earth has followed that practice ever since. It is glaring that Satan wanted the privileges that man has with God, but he can never get it, so he fabricates adulteration. He saw the power which flowed by virtue of building an altar and he introduced his diabolical version to further entangle men and worsen the burden of men. A man's life may be enhanced with an altar or destroyed with an altar. An altar has the power to draw sacrifice, and the sacrifice has the power to tear between the earthly realm into the supernatural and establish covenants. The first altar we read of was erected by Noah (Genesis 8:20). Altars were erected by Abraham (Genesis 12:7; 13:4; 22:9), by Isaac (Genesis 26:25), by Jacob (Genesis 33:20; Genesis 35:1, Genesis 35:3), and by Moses ( Exodus 17:15) in the tabernacle, and afterward in the temple. An altar is a symbol of worship. It is usually found at shrines, and it can be located in temples, churches, and other places of worship. Today altars are used particularly in Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shinto, Taoism, Neopaganism, and Ceremonial Magic, even in Judaism. Many historical faiths also made use of them, including Greek and Norse religions. An altar always represented a place of consecration. Before God gave His Law to Moses, men made altars wherever they were out of whatever material was available. An altar was often built to commemorate an encounter with a higher power that had a profound impact on someone. It must be borne in mind that at the place of the altar, the divine and human worlds interact. Abram, Isaac, Jacob, David, and Gideon, all built altars and worshiped after having a unique encounter with God. The place of altar is a place of exchange, it's a place of communion, it is a place of influence. The contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal involving an altar demonstrated an interaction between Yahweh and Baal. Noah built an altar and offered a sacrifice to Yahweh. God smelled the aroma and found it pleasing. He responded to Noah's action by declaring that he would never again destroy all living things through a flood. As a place of communion, prayers and worship activities are carried out there. It is a place of discussion, dialogue, and communication with spiritual powers. It is a place of spiritual sacrifice or making of covenants. God blesses His people at the altar of prayer. The foundation for a successful Christian life and ministry is rooted in the altar of prayer. Gen. 8:20-22; Gen. 12:6-8; Lk. 24:49 During times of Israel's rebellion and idolatry, the Lord's altars fell into disrepair. The prophet Elijah, confronting the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel, "repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down" (1 Kings 18:30-39). Elijah's restoration of the altar was significant, given the rampant paganism of his day. It was on this rebuilt altar that God rained down fire and put the Baal worshipers to shame When we surrender areas of our lives to the control of the Holy Spirit, we are in effect laying that area on the altar before God. It can help to visualize Abraham's altar where he offered his son Isaac to the Lord (Genesis 22:9). We can ask the Lord what areas of our lives He is requiring that we offer to Him. We can symbolically lay that on the altar and let go. We don't need a flat-topped surface; we can surrender our lives to God on the altar of our hearts at any time. Book excerpt: Discover your true identity in Christ. Many of us live for the approval of others. We let the world decide who we are, or we look to those around us to discover who we think we’d like to be. The problem is that living for what people think of you is the quickest way to forget what God thinks of you. In Altar Ego, pastor and author of Winning the War in Your Mind Craig Groeschel will show you how to sacrifice your broken ideas of approval-based identity on the altar of God’s truth and become who you were meant to be in Christ. You'll learn how to: Expose false labels and selfish motives. Live according to God's higher values with a deeper confidence in His calling. Trade in your broken ego and unleash your “altar” ego as a living sacrifice to Him. Understand how God continuously shapes you into His vision of you. Once you know your true identity and are growing in Christ-like character, then you can behave accordingly with bold behavior, bold prayers, bold words, and bold obedience. Altar Ego reveals who God says you are, and then calls you to live up to it. Rather than living a timid, halfhearted, shallow cultural Christianity, you'll boldly live in the confidence of the God who believes in you.

Book Upon the Altar of the Nation

Download or read book Upon the Altar of the Nation written by Harry S. Stout and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-03-27 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A profound and timely examination of the moral underpinnings of the War Between the States The Civil War was not only a war of armies but also a war of ideas, in which Union and Confederacy alike identified itself as a moral nation with God on its side. In this watershed book, Harry S. Stout measures the gap between those claims and the war’s actual conduct. Ranging from the home front to the trenches and drawing on a wealth of contemporary documents, Stout explores the lethal mix of propaganda and ideology that came to justify slaughter on and off the battlefield. At a time when our country is once again at war, Upon the Altar of the Nation is a deeply necessary book.

Book Altar Versus Altars Revised Edition Deliverance By Sacrifice

Download or read book Altar Versus Altars Revised Edition Deliverance By Sacrifice written by Bishop (Dr ). Abraham Chigbundu and published by Freedom Publications. This book was released on 2021-10-22 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will give you great insight into why many people have gone for deliverance ministrations, fasted, gone for all night meetings and yet the evidence is yet to be seen. This is an attempt to give answer and insight to too many questions in the minds of people. When we destroy the old altar through deliverance ministrations, it becomes mandatory for us to raise a new altar with sacrifices for us to move to the next level or provoke evidence. An altar is a raised or designated place where sacrifices are made to deities. It is a place where humanity meets with divinity. Biblical altars were generally structures of earth (Ex. 20:24) or hewn stones (Ex. 20:25) on which sacrifices were offered. They were generally erected in conspicuous places (Gen. 22:19) Thank God for His faithfulness, the book you are holding in your hands will provide answers to many questions in your life.

Book Black Gods of the Asphalt

Download or read book Black Gods of the Asphalt written by Onaje X. O. Woodbine and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J-Rod moves like a small tank on the court, his face mean, staring down his opponents. "I play just like my father," he says. "Before my father died, he was a problem on the court. I'm a problem." Playing basketball for him fuses past and present, conjuring his father's memory into a force that opponents can feel in each bone-snapping drive to the basket. On the street, every ballplayer has a story. Onaje X. O. Woodbine, a former streetball player who became an all-star Ivy Leaguer, brings the sights and sounds, hopes and dreams of street basketball to life. He shows that big games have a trickster figure and a master of black talk whose commentary interprets the game for audiences. The beats of hip-hop and reggae make up the soundtrack, and the ballplayers are half-men, half-heroes, defying the ghetto's limitations with their flights to the basket. Basketball is popular among young black American men but not because, as many claim, they are "pushed by poverty" or "pulled" by white institutions to play it. Black men choose to participate in basketball because of the transcendent experience of the game. Through interviews with and observations of urban basketball players, Onaje X. O. Woodbine composes a rare portrait of a passionate, committed, and resilient group of athletes who use the court to mine what urban life cannot corrupt. If people turn to religion to reimagine their place in the world, then black streetball players are indeed the hierophants of the asphalt.
